Only "slightly" punctured though, apparently!

Two points on this:

1. Hakim did seem to make a few catches yesterday going by the twitter feed.

2. At Bills camp, Percy Harvin has been getting reps at CB!!!

I still think Hakim has a good shot to make this team.  (Sorry, 68).

Hadn't seen Rousey's comments on this, but yeah I was aware he gave her his blessing to use it and the timing of it all was not lost on me when I heard about this yesterday.

She's been running the cap the whole time pretty much anyway from what I heard.

Last night's game was actually really good, even before the fairytale ending.

Great pitching from Harvey and most of the relievers on both teams.  Some really tough at-bats from hitters on both teams.  Amazing defensive plays from both teams.  Also a "big fight feel" because of the optimism swirling around the Mets following the big trade.  The Flores support and ultimate Hollywood ending just added to it.

Is this what meaningful August baseball is like?

We might have us a legit pennant race!

I was sad Harvey couldn't get the win, but happy with the outcome. It was an intense game.

Really hoping Cespedes goes the Piazza route, as in actually succeeding in NYC.

It seems odd but maybe they are giving the most reps to Winters and Qvale early because they are far behind and hope to get them up to speed for when the pads come on. They pretty much know what they have with Oday.

levi
levi

@williamg1  I dont get it. Just have to wait and see I guess.

williamg1
williamg1

@levi But that's the thing, they don't really know what they have in Oday. He was solid last year in games where he didn't play against the Bills, but he hadn't arrived. He was trending up. He could certainly use the reps in the installation of a new offense.

I just think at a minimum he did enough to earn 1st team reps at the spot.

Bent

@williamg1 @levi Not to mention that RG is usually easier than LG (although you don't get the luxury of playing next to Brick), so Aboushi would be potentially better than he showed last year there.

@levi I watched him fight live in wrestlemania 2. He lost by disqualification to Mr T. Very controversial decision. I haven't quite gotten over it.

@williamg1  Ha. He was a great heel. Always one of my favorites. Very funny too.

I was legitimately sad over this.

When he beat cancer and made his first appearance back in WWE that was a really emotional moment.  Guessing there will be some top-notch tributes on WWE TV over the next few weeks.

Hey - you watching UFC tonight, levi?  I'm watching for Ronda, but is there anything else worthwhile on the card?

levi
levi

@Bent  I didnt know about the cancer. I was reading about that today. I agree it was sad to hear of his passing. He was very good in his craft and a pioneer of the sport. Without him the good guys wouldnt have been the stars they were.

Im heading for camp and some fun in the water and sun so no UFC tonight for me. There should be a bunch of KOs but I dont think the card is all that good. It should be entertaining but no real contenders. Mostly older guys.

WSOF has a match tonight I would like to see though. Sheilds vs Palhares.

I am wondering if Devin Smith would of suffered broken ribs if he was wearing shoulder pads? It seems these new player safety rules may be backfiring.

Bent
Bent moderator

@jaym @__fense

You're right, this is kind of a freak.  Jarrett, a strong guy wearing a helmet, likely fell on him which would be no big deal in pads.

I broke a rib playing basketball when I dived for a loose ball and the opposing guy going after the same ball slipped and I landed rib first on the heel/side of his sneaker.

No 4-6 weeks for me though, it was the playoffs!  I finished that game and played the following week.  Some big dude nailed me as I went to set a screen on him and that was maybe the worst pain I ever felt.

Bent
Bent moderator

@MikeFrancesser @Bent

That's nothing, I played the last three games of the season one year with a broken back!

I literally could barely move during the week, just about loosened it up so I could play and then it would stiffen right up again afterwards.  I'd have to keep moving around when on the bench and at half time so it wouldn't cease up.

Ha.  I'm not entirely sure a return to the line-up for Wright at this time would be the best thing for him or the team.

Big game tonight.

For the first time in awhile, injured David Wright is about to participate in baseball activities for three straight days with rehab games on the horizon.

We continue to hear good news for the Mets.  I'm thinking meaningful games in September this year.

I woke up this morning and gave Wilmer Flores a standing ovation again.  What a crazy week for this kid.

@Bklyn Dude

Kinda knew something like this would happen to the kid after the other night's drama.  Selfishly, though, I was hoping it would come in October.  That would have been a better story!

Bklyn Dude
Bklyn Dude

@Bent @Bklyn Dude

Last night does not prevent Flores from getting big hits in October.

As mad as everybody has been with the Wilpons lack of spending and Alderson slow and methodical approach, this Mets team is positioned nicely to make a run.

I expect Harvey, deGrom and Syndergaard to throw lots of zero run innings down the stretch.  Matz might knock Colon out of the rotation when he returns and really give this team something to dream about.

I don't get Aboushi not receiving a fair shot... Did the coaches not watch Winters fail miserably before getting hurt last year?

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@MikeFrancesser it also isn't the WRs fault that Geno is completely inept & lacks the mental ability to read defenses & poise to function under even the slightest amount of pressure to be an even passable QB in the NFL.

Bklyn Dude
Bklyn Dude

@marc55

Aboushi at LG last year was good especially in pass protection.  Maybe they are looking for a better run blocker at RG.

I remember when Winters was at LG he was pretty good pulling to the right side.  I'm pretty sure if Winters keeps falling down in pass protection he won't be there too long.

Maybe his off season conditioning was focused on strengthening his legs to keep him upright.

__fense
__fense

@hitchhiker I don't really know enough about Winters or Aboushi to really tell who has the higher ceiling, but your logic is sound.

Bowles said yesterday, when asked what he sees when looking at the RG position in camp, "I don't see anything at RG until the pads go on". It could be that they are giving him reps now, when it doesn't matter, to better prepare him to actually compete and hopefully win against Aboushi and the rest once they start hitting?

Disgruntled Jets Fan
Disgruntled Jets Fan

@hitchhiker Not really.  There's no evidence of that.  And unllike Geno, there are clearly better players on the team for the position than Winters.  At least Geno had a couple of good games.  Winters has not had anything promising.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@marc55 I find it interesting that Winters is universally bashed, but many of the excuses made by the Geno supporters are appropriate for Winters too.

He was rushed into the lineup even though he played a different position in college & was very raw, he had to block for a clueless QB that held the ball too long & has been unable to recognize blitzes (basically #weaponzz for OL), the HC "hated the offense & showed interest only to meddle & screw things up," etc.

I have as much hope for Winters turning things around as Geno, so doesn't it make sense that the coaching staff gives Winters the early lead on a starting position because he has a "higher ceiling" than Aboushi?

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@Disgruntled Jets Fan Fitzpatrick has had many more good games than Geno & has clearly had a better career than Geno.

Plus, it's Geno's fault that Winters has struggled, much like it is the WRs' fault when Geno has struggled.

MikeFrancesser
MikeFrancesser

@hitchhiker It's not Geno's fault when Winters ends up getting thrown to the ground though.  He's completely inept and lacks the physical strength (i think he's already maxed out there) to be an even passable guard in the NFL.

MikeFrancesser
MikeFrancesser

@hitchhiker Not sure what WR have to do with anything.  Geno Smith stinks.  Winters stinks.  Their suckyness is mutually exclusive.

marc55
marc55

@Guy incognito I completely agree with you Incognito.  Aboushi is more athletic and held up much better in pass protection.  I saw interior pass rushers beat Winters one on one entirely too much, and I didn't think the run game lost a beat without winters.  As far as conditioning is concerned, Iwould like to think that Aboushi had a leg up because he was healthy heading into the offseason, but I have no idea who worked harder.

Bent
Bent moderator

@hitchhiker

It's funny, in year one, guys were very supportive of Winters and dismissive of Aboushi.  Even when he first replaced Vlad and struggled, there was a lot of excuses made for him with the assumption that, being a third rounder, he would eventually figure it out.

Aboushi - because he didn't play - was out of sight and out of mind.

Now, Aboushi was certainly better than Winters last year (despite the two rough games against Kyle Williams).  Who knows, though, maybe Winters would have improved over the second half too.

Contrast this with someone like Dooozier who is another mid-round pick but again even though he's behind those guys, we haven't seen poor play from him so there might still be optimism he could contribute.

I feel partly responsible for the Winters hate because obviously I've been critical of him when he has played poorly (ie most of the time).  He's showed some positive things at times though (just not with any consistency), so maybe we shouldn't write off a third round pick figuring it out and living up to his potential.

Bent

@marc55 Fail miserably or fall miserably?

marc55
marc55

@Bent @hitchhiker I completely agree with your Dooz comment, and I have not given up on him, I just agree with the team getting him comfortable at center, so we have some degree of depth there.  It's a difficult task for the coaches to get all of these guys time, but I would like to think that Dooz can win himself some guard reps if he stands out backing up at center.

Bent
Bent moderator

@marc55 @Bent @hitchhiker

FWIW my intel is that he barely, if at all, played any center yesterday and neither did Winters.

Seems like Freeman is the #2 and Wesley Johnson the #3.

marc55
marc55

@Bent @marc55 @hitchhiker Good intel.  This is the stuff I wish the beat writers would be telling us instead of nonstop Sheldon Richardson updates.  I have been generally disapointed with the daily recaps thus far.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@MikeFrancesser I agree 100% that both Geno & Winters stink, & I would prefer neither one be currently receiving 1st team reps.

If you had read my initial comment more carefully, you would've noticed I wasn't actually supporting Winters, but commenting on the steady stream of excuses made for Geno by a segment of the fan base & how those excuses are not consistently applied to the evaluation of other players.

hitchhiker
hitchhiker

@Bent it is far from certain that any of the guys competing for LG are actually "good enough."

Do you think one of them will "step up" either during TC or during the season?

Do you think the Jets end up signing someone once roster cuts begin?

Guy incognito
Guy incognito

@hitchhiker

So what about Aboushi then? You're making all of these excuses for Winters based on the fact that Geno was garbage and that'd be tough on a new offensive lineman. While that's a valid point, Oday was put into the exact same scenario and played heads and shoulders better than Winters.

Bent
Bent moderator

@hitchhiker

Did you mean RG?

Nobody is competing for LG, that's Carpenter's role.

FWIW Oday has been the #2 LG.

I think the chances that one will step up are good.  Wouldn't anticipate a late signing unless they ALL really flop because that would mean entering the season with no cohesion on the line.
