Final Score: Marlins 4 Mets 3

The Mets (73-88) lost to the Marlins (69-92) tonight by the score of 4-3 in 11 innings.

The Least You Should Know:

Donovan Solano delivered a walk off single with the bases loaded in the 11th off Colin McHugh.

R.A. Dickey threw six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter, struck out eight, and did not factor into the decision.

The Marlins’ Adam Greenberg got his first career at bat and struck out against Dickey on three pitches in the sixth.

David Wright drove in the Mets’ first run, his 93rd RBI of the season, with a two out single in the eighth.

Scott Hairston collected four hits: singles in the second, fifth, eighth and tenth innings.

To me, there was no bigger highlight than seeing Greenberg step into a Major League batter’s box. In his lone Big League plate appearance prior to tonight back in 2005, he was struck in the back of the head by a Valerio de los Santos 92 MPH fastball that effectively ended his career before it even got off the ground. Greenberg worked to get back into baseball, making stops in both the Minors and the independent Atlantic League before singing a one-day contract to get that elusive at bat tonight. He can now claim to do something many hitters have done this season: strike out against R.A. Dickey. Congratulations, Adam. Your achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication.

Speaking of Dickey, even though tonight didn’t produce win number 21, it was nice to soak in one last start of, what has been, a storybook season for the knuckleballer. It’s both my hope and belief that Dickey will and should be named the 2012 Cy Young Award winner, but even the Baseball Writers’ Association of America does not hand R.A. hardware, it’s a season of individual accomplishment that I will remember for a long, long time.
