Opinion: The Crowd was Awesome Last Night

…the crowd at Shea Stadium last night, which i am proud to have been a part of, had an impact on last night’s game… i truly believe that… it really felt like the crowd came to the game on a mission, like we had a job and a role to play… it was a pretty powerful feeling…

…from the first pitch to the last pitch, the fans in the stands were pumped up… i am us

ually pretty reserved at a baseball game, fidgety and focused, but even i can barely speak today… the entire stadium never settled for anything less that constant support of the team

…i got chills when Billy Wagner entered the game… next to me, there was a man in his early 70s singing to Metallica’s Enter Sandman, while pumping his fist over his head… a few rows to my right was a little girl, not yet a teenager, with a black mets hat, stomping her feat and bobbing her head to the beat… everyone was in to it… wagner allowed two runs, during which i’m pretty sure i held my breath for a full minute…

…my hands are bright red from clapping so hard…

…what a night… i’m proud to be a Mets fan… we made a difference last night, no question… just ask the players:

In his report for the New York Post, Billy Wagner wrote…

“We’ve got the home-crowd advantage – the 26th man on the club – and we’re ready to embrace them and feed off their electricity.”

Paul Lo Duca said after the game…

“The fans here are huge.  Whenever you have that electricity on your side and every little break – I looked in the stands a couple of times and it looked like a college students section, people didn’t sit down the whole game.  That’s an unbelievable feeling.  And when something goes your way, it’s electric.  To me it’s huge.  You’re very aware of the fans here, and that’s why you work hard all year to get home-field advantage.   That’s why it’s so big.”

John Maine later said…

“The fans here, if you need that little extra momentum, they will help you out.  They will give it to you.  It’s fun to play in front of these fans.”

Willie Randolph added:

“The fans were great tonight, outstanding atmosphere.  I didn’t expect anything differently.  I knew they would give us a nice jolt tonight and they did, and the players responded.”

…it was our pleasure, willie
