MLB: New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers

Game Recap: Mets 11, Dodgers 3

Result: The Mets avoided a sweep in Los Angeles with an 11-3 victory Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Need to Know: Lucas Duda enjoyed his second multi-homer game of the 2014 season, opening the floodgates against Kevin Correia with a three-run bomb in the third inning that extended the Mets’ lead to 5-1. He added a solo shot in the ninth along with an RBI single in the seventh, and totaled five RBIs on the day. Bartolo Colon was solid over six innings in his first start since his mother’s death, allowing just two runs and striking out five. Travis d’Arnaud and Ruben Tejada added home runs of their own against Correia, and Daniel Murphy went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.

What’s Next: The Mets are off Monday as they travel back to Citi Field to start a three-game set with the Braves. Dillon Gee (4-6, 3.84 ERA) will try to bounce back from consecutive starts allowing four earned runs against Atlanta’s Alex Wood (9-9, 3.05 ERA), who has allowed just seven earned runs in his last 33 1/3 innings.

Duda is third in the national league in home runs right now. Unless Stanton has hit his last home run of the season Duda won't get the title but he's in striking distance of second place (three behind Rizzo) especially the way he is hitting. He's also 6th in RBIs and 7th among all major league 1st baseman in OPS (only 005 behind Freddy Freeman and .015 behind Miguel Freaking Cabrera). He's far exceeded even the wildest expectations and I am very comfortable going forward with him as the cleanup hitter.

and with this game guess who moves into #2 on the team in OPS?

KIRK NIEWENHUIS!

but keep plaing MDD and Eric Young in LF.

It really is amazing how the Mets couldn't have won more games to stay in the hunt. I mean we all know the reason, which is inconsistency. The only players who were on all year were Murph and Duda. If everyone or even most of this team could've played up to their potential, we would've been in contention. Granderson, Wright, Tda having to find himself after he came back and Duda being chosen after the start of the year. I know it never works out, but it really could've if things broke right for the Mets. Legares also had been streaky, but good overall. If he was consistent and not hurt a couple times, mets would've been able to put together something nice. We need a real leadoff like a Reyes type. We can only wish and dream to get such a player.

Congrats to Lucas D. I certainly was wrong about him , however I never called anyone or their mom names for liking him. I may be wrong about Flores too who I  do not think belongs in the lineup now. But we are all allowed to express our opinions without ridiculous insults from those who disagree.

Anyway, its wonderful to think we may have a valuable 1B . With time hopefully he can hit lefties better. And hopefully DW will get rid of his demons in 2015. Im betting on him.

Some may argue moving Wright lower in the batting order to the 6th is wrong since he is the only right-handed bat, breaking up all the lefties above and below him. I would say when he is not getting a hit regardless, and goes hitless in most games, he serves no purpose batting 3rd, Instead of breaking up the lefties, he is interrupting the lefties from hitting! He has become an automatic rally-killer and an easy out! At this point, he is the Most Glorified Singles Hitter in all of baseball!

Mets and cardinals run differential are very similar. I know run differential doesn't always translate to wins and losses, but I can't help but think that the cards record is so much better due to management.

Amazing! David Wright got a single this evening! Terry might win the manager of the year award for his excellent consistency in making sure Wright keeps batting 3rd all year!

Colon has proved that he is the real deal, and he will not break down next year....I believe that SA will get us a quality player in return.....Ha, this seems to be his strength........

Today's game was really fun to watch. I wish we could see more games were it all comes together for our Metsies. Congrats to Bartolo for pitching a good game especially during his grieving period, Travis and Reuben for HRs and Lucas getting it done twice. Lets Go Mets.

Umm... game recap.... and no mention of the triple play? I was at the game and as much as I was feeling good about the mets crushing the boys in blue, seeing my first triple play live was the highlight of the night for me.

How crazy is it that Lucas Duda is 7 homers behind Jose Abreu on the year?

George Komninakis
George Komninakis

Ralph Kiner absolutely loved Duda's swing. He always raved about it.  I think out of us all combined, Ralph Kiner has more knowledge about hitting.   I trust Duda's success is no fluke!

As for Wright, he needs to be traded or bat 5th.   D'arnaud should bat 3rd.  End of Story!!

Batting 150 against lefties. He better get better or else teams will be trouting out lefties whenever they face the Mets

@Muhammad Qureshi If David Wright played like he did last year and Harvey didn't get hurt we would probably have made the playoffs.

@nhmetsfan IMO,Flores will only be a role player during his career.......You can see that he is doing his best at SS.......He is not fluid, and that is why he has so many critics.....What about this guy TJ Riviera.....I think that he has about a months worth of hits this week.....Anyone know what's up with him........

pologround

@nhmetsfan I always liked Duda's swing, but he had a 25 watt light bulb look on his face.......I did not think that he had the fire going on inside, and that's why i wanted Ike instead.....I was wrong.....

@Nick Congello There is no evidence that managers have anything to do with the degree to which a team under- or over-performs its pythgorean expectation.

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@Antonino Plaud he can be traded to any team. but i think if he is traded in september he is ineligible for the playoffs, should a contender be interested. then they will probably just try again to trade him in the offseason. they kind of waited until the last minute to put him on waivers

@pointguard You aren't getting rid of Granderson. So you are looking at Duda/rh platoonmate at 1B, Herrera at 2B, Would like to see Reynolds at SS some, but not sure he is a solution. Wright at 3B. Tomas in LF, JLag in CF and Granderson in RF.

@BringBackDaveTelghe I think its crazier that hes' 3rd in the NL. He has just been climbing the ladder since the ASB. As ridiculous as Lucas has been...imagine Stanton on our team. Ugh..

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@BringBackDaveTelghe Abreu hit 29 before the ASB and has hit only 4 since. Lucas hit 14 before the break and now has 12 since. Nice to see that despite being a little streaky, Lucas has been consistent overall. And still has 31 or so games left to add on. At this rate he may finish the year with as many or more HR than Abreu...Crazy.

@George Komninakis that was what I keep saying before getting attacked by David Wright fan club. He is 6th hitter

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@George Komninakis Pretty sure Murphy should bat 3rd. In any case, d'Arnaud is decent protection for Duda because he can hit it out of the park too.

Antonino Plaud
Antonino Plaud

@George Komninakis I think that  Collins should move Wright to second spot and then move Murphy to the third slot. That way you break out the lefty/lefty at the top of the l/u in addition to provide a decent protection for Duda in the fourth place. I think it make sense and should be tried this month before the rookies come up.

almar

@ponzies86 Teams can't alter their rotations anytime they want to just to throw lefties to Duda. I will take Duda's numbers at the end of this season, even if he hits .150 against lefties.

@birtelcom @Nick Congello

There is no evidence because you can't isolate the effect of the manager from other variables cleanly enough.  That doesn't mean it isn't true.  The manager might well cause that amount of difference, and TC might be why we're not a .500 team already.

josef
josef

@borsh13 Isn't the definition of stupidity, doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different result? I guess TC qualifies!

Antonino Plaud
Antonino Plaud

@thecasuaLGM @Antonino Plaud Sorry for delay! That is correct about the september barrier, However since the teams needs to absorb his contract no team other than Yankees or Angels would make a move on him because 11.X millions its a lot of sh--. But imagined no one claims him, Would you let  the leader in victories of your staff just for free. After he clears waivers what would Alderson do?

MetsFan1962
MetsFan1962

@crafalko17 . . I don't know if Bartolo will be gone next season because no team wants to pick up the $11 Mil still owed him. If he can pitch next season like he's doing for us right now....I would be fine with that.

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@1harris1 @George Komninakis The guy has been batting around 260 overall w/ a 450 SLG% since being recalled from AAA and is clearly the superior power threat of the two right now. His 228 AVG is bogged down by that 190 AVG before being sent down. I'd say a guy with a 368 SLG%(226 in the 2nd half) has no business batting 3rd. David isn't right right now.

joe21
joe21

@ken1010 @birtelcom @Nick Congello  you can speculate that TC is the reason why the team is not .500, but it is more reasonable to suggest that the two hitters with the greatest expectations falling flat and slow starts from TDA and Duda might be a better reason. I don't care for TC and would not mind him being replaced, but if you think that will change DW and Grandy performance, I think you are mistaken

1harris1
1harris1

@josef @1harris1 @George Komninakis  It probably should be Murphy, but he doesn't like hitting there.  Other than Murphy, I don't see a legitimate candidate to hit there at the present time.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@josef @1harris1 @George Komninakis Honesty, Wright should be hitting 8th right now. I love Wright and hope he figures it out though, because he is everything a 3 hitter should be when he is going well.

josef
josef

@Nick Congello Even better!! He sucks and has sucked since they hired him, but the GM is too proud of his hiring to cut his losses and move forward!

1harris1
1harris1

@thecasuaLGM @crafalko17 @1harris1 @George Komninakis  d'Arnaud has done nothing to merit hitting third.  I would keep him where he is for now.

I don't disagree on the need to remove Wright from that spot, but the problem is there's really nobody else qualified to do it, other than Murphy.  Murphy though claims he isn't comfortable hitting third (which for the life of me, I don't understand).  They can only do so much with that situation for now,
