Andrew Vazzano, SNY.tvBobby Parnell threw his first live batting practice on Saturday, clearing a “big mental hurdle” for himself.
He tossed 35 pitches to David Wright, Daniel Murphy and Eric Young Jr., mixing in curveballs to go along with his fastball. Parnell said he tried to keep everything down in his first live bullpen session.
“Going early like this, you don’t expect to be perfect. By no means was I, but everything was down and I feel like I can work off that really well,” he said.
Parnell said his main concern was following balls that were hit after his neck surgery this offseason.
“I didn’t know how I’d react to balls off the bat,” he said. “I try not to do a lot of herky-jerky stuff with my neck.”
Parnell plans on at least one more session before getting into a game.
“I feel great. Arm feels good. Neck feels good,” he said. “I’ll see how I react tomorrow.”
