Joel Sherman says the Mets are under the impression that there is nothing pressing with Jose Reyes; and they will get the opportunity to counter any offer he is presented with.

The thing is, from what I can gather talking to people around baseball, and around the player, Matt Kemp’s eight-year, $160 million deal may have given Jose’s camp a renewed motivation to demand the infamous ‘Carl Crawford deal,’ i.e., seven years and $140 million. Most people in baseball that I’ve talked to (not directly involved in these talks) seem to believe Miami likely offered four or five years or less than $100 million total, as it is a logical starting point. The Mets would likely match this, people say. However, it’s a starting point. And, I’ve been hearing for a while now that Reyes is still insisting that he get a deal worth at least $100 million (which I’ve been writing since mid October); and this has only become more firm in the wake of Kemp.

Here are other key updates about Jose over the last few days:

• According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Marlins have offered Reyes a six-year, $90 million deal. However, according to Rosenthal, “The offer was not tempting enough for Reyes to accept immediately.”
• Reyes is targeting at least a $100 million deal.
• Sandy Alderson and Jose’s representatives have been in contact since Reyes met with the Marlins in Miami last week. “We’ve had some conversations,” Alderson said.
• The Marlins offer to Jose was ‘preliminary’ in nature.
• Hanley Ramirez is not pleased with the idea of changing positions, if the Marlins sign Reyes. Sunday night, Dino Costa of SiriusXM Radio said Reyes will sign with the Marlinscontingent on Ramirez agreeing to switch positions.
• The Tigers like Reyes, but don’t expect to sign him.
• Reyes is the Brewers top target this winter. However, when speaking with reporters on Monday, Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he’s only had one phone call with Jose’s agent and he isn’t sure if there will be anymore contact.
• The Mets expect Reyes to come back to them for a possible offer after he’s done shopping, though they are not going to engage in a bidding war.
