Dice-K gets another minor league start; deGrom to throw

Daisuke Matsuzaka, on the disabled list with elbow inflammation since July 26, will make his second rehab start with Double-A Binghamton Saturday at Reading (ESPN, Aug. 15).

Terry Collins told ESPN Friday that Matsuzaka’s role when he returns to the majors will depend on Jacob deGrom’s health and Rafael Montero’s performance. Matsuzaka pitched three scoreless innings with Class A St. Lucie Monday.

Collins said bringing back Matsuzaka as a starter would partly depend on if deGrom returns from the DL on time. DeGrom is scheduled to throw for the first time on Saturday since going on the DL with rotator cuff tendinitis. The plan is for him to miss one more start, then pitch next Saturday at Dodger Stadium.

If deGrom is not ready, and Montero struggles again Sunday against the Cubs, Collins left the door open for Matsuzaka to return as a starter.

Dice-K has done a fantastic job for the NYM's this year.  Whatever role they've asked him to step into, from spot starter, to long relief, to setup man, to closer, to AAA depth.  He has done it all and without complaint.  What a great model to the young pitchers in the rotation.  A credit to the sport and his profession.
