Zack Wheeler will not pitch in MLB in 2012

Sandy Alderson told reporters today that there is “no scenario” in which Zack Wheeler will pitch in the Major Leagues this season.

Alderson said Wheeler should be promoted to Triple-A Buffalo soon.

Wheeler is 9-4 this season at Double-A and his 2.39 ERA is second best in the Eastern League.

On Saturday, Terry Collins suggested Wheeler might be able to contribute at the major League Level this season.

“It’s not that I have this hard and fast belief that everyone needs to take one step at a time, but we have other options,” Alderson later told WFAN’s Mike Francesa. “He’s come quickly, and we think he’ll pitch well at Triple-A.”

Toby Hyde: Wheeler is extremely physically gifted. He can run his fastball up to 97 mph. He has a nasty slider. But the reality is that AAA is harder than AA and the big leagues are much, much harder than both. Before giving him a big league look, lets see him succeed against AAA hitters.
