Zack Wheeler placed on disabled list

Zack Wheeler will be placed on the 7-Day Disabled List with a right middle fingernail avulsion, the team announced.

The move is retroactive to May 2.

Wheeler is 1-2 with a 1.75 ERA (five earned runs/25.2 innings) in five starts with Double-A Binghamton so far this season.

Toby Hyde: Wikipedia tells us that “an avulsion is an injury in which a body structure is forcibly detached. It most commonly refers to a surface trauma where all layers of the skin have been torn away, exposing the underlying structures (e.g. subcutaneous tissue, muscle, tendons). This is similar to an abrasion but more severe, … the term comes from the Latin word avellere, “to tear off.”  This is the second time that a problem with this fingernail has sent Wheeler to the disabled list. … In 2010 Wheeler headed to the disabled list after 26.2 innings. In 2012, Wheeler is heading to the disabled list after 25.2 innings. Go figure. He did not miss a start in 2011 when he threw 115 innings combined between the Mets and Giants systems.
