Terry Collins told reporters today that Zack Wheeler could possibly pitch for the Mets in 2012.
Wheeler is 8-4 with a 2.62 ERA in 15 starts for the Double-A Binghamton Mets this season. He has not pitched above Double-A in his professional career.
Michael Baron: Wheeler has been outstanding for Double-A Binghamton this season. I think he certainly warrants a promotion to Triple-A (which Sandy Alderson hinted at earlier this season), but a discussion about a possible contribution at the big league level this season might be a tad premature at this stage. After all, the debate right now is whether or not Matt Harvey should be promoted to the big leagues, and there doesn’t seem to be much certainty with that. I don’t think it’s terribly far fetched to think about Wheeler in terms of the 2013 rotation, but he needs to get to Triple-A first, pitch well, and build his innings there first.
