“I have to thank the New York Mets for giving me the opportunity to play in the big leagues,” Jose Reyes said this afternoon, while wearing his new Marlins hat and jersey. “Right now, I’m really excited and happy to go to Miami.I’m part of this family now, and I have to move on.”
He said he has a lot of love for his fans in New York, who supported him through the good times and the bad times. He appreciates everything the Mets and their fans have done for him. However, he added, “This is a business and it is time for me to move on.”
According to Reyes, the Mets never made him a ‘real offer,’ so he feels that meant the Mets didn’t want him to return. “I need to move on,” he repeated.
In their first meeting at 12:01 am on October 31, one minute after free agency officially began, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria met Reyes and his agents at a hotel in New York wearing a new Marlins jersey with Jose’s name on it.
