News: Mets make Changes to Minor-League Personnel

The New York Times and Daily News both report the Mets will not re-hire Ramon Pena, a special assistant to GM Omar Minaya.

Pena is in charge of international scouting,

According to the Times, “The departure of Pena is expected to be part of a larger shakeup in scouting and player development.”

The Daily News also says vice president of scouting Sandy Johnson intends to retire; while minor-league field coordinator Luis Aguayo has been fired.

…last month, someone close to the team told me the Mets know they must make fundamental changes their minor-league and draft strategy… perhaps this is the first step… i hope this means a return to selecting players out of college, protecting their top picks and drafting over slot in the early rounds…
