Mets tried to acquire Huston Street in the offseason

In a post to Twitter, Andy Martino of the Daily News said a source informed him that the Mets had “aggressively” attempted to acquire Huston Street last winter before they signed Frank Francisco.

Martino goes on to say that the Mets do not think San Diego will trade Street this summer.

Yesterday evening, CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman reported that the Padres are planning to offer Street, as well as outfielder Carlos Quentin, new long-term deals before the trade deadline.

So far this season, Street is 2-0 with a 1.07 ERA in 27 appearances with the Padres. He has walked eight and struck out 34 in 25 1/3 innings of work.

On June 12, Martino posted on Twitter that the Mets had called the Padres about Street. It was originally thought that Street would have issues playing for Mets bench coach Bob Geren, who Street had to be separated from in 2008 when Geren was Street’s manager in Oakland. Heyman wrote on July 11, however, that Street would not have a problem reuniting with Geren.

 Michael Baron: Street has had injury and performance issues in his career, as he’s undergone Tommy John Surgery and has lost his job as closer on occasion over the years. He is an interesting pitcher in that he tallies a lot of strikeouts, but he’s not a particularly hard thrower. He’ll live in the low 90s with his fastball, but he has an unusual tailing action to that pitch and he compliments it with a hard slider, which works to change the eye level and direction of the hitters eye. He’ll also throw a heavy change-up as well. He gave up a lot of home runs last year but he is a strike thrower, and that has value for the Mets bullpen.

In regards to Street’s problems with Geren, it’s important for a player to not just want to play for a team, but be able to function professionally with everyone on it. I wonder if their relationship could be repaired to a point they could work together now that Geren is in a different role.
