Mets activate Valdespin & DFA Justin Hampson

Terry Collins explained that adding Jordany Valdespin and not a reliever to replace Justin Hampson was done to protect against Kirk Niewenhuis being unavailable with a hand bruise.

Collins said they would be adding a reliever to the bullpen in the coming days.

July 4, 12:11 pm: The Mets have recalled Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A Buffalo, and have designated LHP Justin Hampson for assignment.

In 65 plate appearances this season, Valdespin is batting .222 with a .246 OBP, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 5 doubles and 3 stolen bases.

However, he had six hits in the 17 at bats before being sent back to Triple-A 10 days.

The Mets promoted Hampson in an effort to add a second left-handed reliever to the roster. In three appearances, since being promoted on June 24, he let up three hits and two runs in just 1.1 innings of work.
