Photos, Notes and Tweets from Johan's BP session

Johan Santana just completed throwing the following two-inning, 43-pitch, simulated batting practice session in Digital Domain Park.

Matthew Cerrone: First and foremost, it was awesome to see Johan back on a mound. Yes, he was loose and having fun, as usual, but – comparatively – he doesn’t yet have the same zip and pop on his pitches that I’m hearing from Mike Pelfrey or Jon Niese, for example. I’m not saying this is a concern, because only he and the team know where he should be and what he’s trying to accomplish – plus, everyone I talk to seems more focused on how he feels the day after than how he looks the day of. My point, though, is that he looks a bit soft to me still, and so I’m not yet sold on him being ready to pitch Opening Day.

Here are my pictures from his session, which was well attended…

SNY’s Kevin Burkhardt says pitching coach Dan Warthen remarked that Santana had “nice stuff” in his first appearance against live hitters.

Santana threw to a group that included David Wright, Jason Bay, Ike Davis and non-roster invitee Vinny Rottino. Mike Puma of the NY Post said Johan was joking around and “seemed lose” for the duration of the session.
