Ike Davis hit three solo home runs on Saturday

In yesterday’s 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks, Ike Davis went 4-for-4 with a single and three solo home runs.

“I want to get base hits, too, and not just hit home runs. It’s nice that if I’m hitting home runs, at least I’m helping the team in that way,” Davis told reporters after the game.

Davis is now hitting .216 with a career-high 20 home runs and 60 RBI this season.

“When I was hitting .120 with five home runs 2½ months into the season, I was like, ‘This could be a pretty bad year,’” Davis explained. “It’s still not where I want to be, but it’s definitely getting better.”

Since June 22, Davis has hit .268 with 13 home runs and 27 RBI, a span of 112 at-bats over   31 games.

Brian Erni: Obviously, a huge game for Davis, who homered three times before lining a base hit to right for a four-hit night. To me, the two home runs to center were a great sign. Even when Ike was hitting them out earlier in the season, it still seemed like he was a little out in front. His swings last night were so balanced and showed just how much power he has to the middle of the field when he lets the ball get a little deeper in the hitting zone. That’s what made Ike so successful during his first two seasons, and it’s refreshing to see him get back to that.

Davis has put together a nice season in the wake of his slow start, and his swing has come a long way. As the season wraps up, he’ll come close to his first 30 home run season. Considering how bleak things looked early in the season, and the way he worked through his struggles at the Major League level, it shows a lot about Ike’s ability to adjust. That bodes very well for the sustainability of his career.
