Mike Piazza still a little short for HOF election

Baseball Think Factory has counted 20 percent of this year’s Hall of Fame ballots and says Mike Piazza appears on 73 percent of them.

Piazza appeared on the ballot for the second time this year. He received 57.8 percent of the vote last winter – 75 percent is required to gain election into the Hall of Fame.

The 2014 inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame will be announced on Wednesday, January 8.

It's ridiculous that Mets have not retired Piazza's number.

Bill Madden has always been a Mets hater and an apologist for old George.

Hopefully when clueless old fossils like Bill Madden bite the dust that gap will be closed.  This is an embarrassment to baseball.

Hes not even the best Mets catcher, Gary Carter is

Are you kidding me ? All metrics aside. We all saw this man play. He was great. He was the dominant player of his time at his position. He was feared.

Should of been first ballot. Not doting him in now just demeans the hall of fame.

One more point: Piazza has the 95th best fWAR of all time, ahead of such players as Ernie Banks and Hank Greenberg.

To me, if you buy into fWAR, top 100 has to be given serious consideration for the Hall always.

Greatest hitting catcher of all time with no evidence of steroid use deserves to be in the hall.

He will get in on January 8th.  My Grandma's birthday.  My Grandma died in October, 2 days after Piazza's last game as a Met.  I had tickets to the last game, but instead of going, I watched the game with her.  It was our last moment together.  She will get him in.

Funny...you have a hard time finding a better all around catcher in the period Mike played AND you have an equally difficult time naming any BBWA of significance (well maybe Gammons).

Why he's not in is bey ond me. If not this year defently next.

If Piazza does not make it in, I sure better not see Glavine get in, who had 33 wins on "tainted" Mets-Piazza treams (wiithout those 33 wins, Glavine would only have have 272 wins, not sufficient for Cooperstown induction.

He should be a first ballet hall of famer. He's he best hitting catcher of all time

Piazza will get in very soon. I am hoping he get in this year but with maddux/glavien/thomas all on their way in maybe piazza being held back one more year isnt a terrible thing.  Mike was great and he deserves to get in.

I am really surprised by the lack of support Jeff Kent has. His number rank very high amoung second basemen. .290/377hr/1500 rbi. I dont think he wasever suspected of steroid use and in fact he really did not like Barry Bonds. Maybe the fact that he was really bad with the media hurts him.

20% is still not much to go on. Again, he could get more and he could get less. This speculation is just not accurate with 80% of the ballots not revealed.

Anyone into election voting regarding probabilities with partial samples being counted, etc?

OK, so out of 118 ballots cast, he appears on 73.7% of them.  That comes out to 87 and he would need to be on 89.  And there are still some 452 votes to be counted.  He's got a decent shot I think.

Except no. Tell me how many times he appeared in the Mitchell Report and how many times he was named by Canseco. Get back to me when you find a single instance.

Guys....don't sweat it, Piazza will get in...if not this year, then next..

The first timers for this year are a pretty impressive list, which may hurt him a bit, next years first timers are not that impressive...he is in good shape right now.

He isn't "short."  You can't project this like a presidential primary.  That 73.7% is utterly meaningless.

Cerrone can't write and has limited baseball knowledge, but he knows how to drum up page views.

Mike is my favorite Met of all time.  But it looks like the steroid era is going to screw him out of the HOF.  I didn't read his book, but in it he admitted to using for "a bit, no?  That's  not helping his chances.

@Bryan McEntee Okay, so you prefer Carter. i respect that. But what the heck is your point exactly?

I really don't think Mike's ballet experience has anything to do with his Hall of Fame chances.

I totally agree. in fact anyone who watched baseball should agree. Politics ? metrics ? If you saw him you know. This is a no brainer, and the ones who don't vote for him have no brain. If not a guy this dominant, then who, ever????

@LifelongMets True. Last year the same methodology by Baseball Think Factory at this time of year had it right, as it had Biggio falling just shy of the 75% mark and Mike in the 60s. If not this year, he'll enter next year for sure. I'm cool with that.

BringBackDaveTelghe

The one think working against Mike with the known info...people that vote have made their ballots known. There's tons of people who submit blank ballots, etc as a form of formal protest.

bobbysf

@Brett MacLeod Of course. No problem there. The scumbag you're talking about may never get in.

@Jeff Ordon Just curious how Frank Thomas skirts all suspicion while Bagwell and Piazza don't.

Oh right, Thomas was a first-round bonus baby, while Piazza and Bagwell were low-round picks who rose the hard way.  They must've cheated, or else the whole system must be run by clueless idiots who have no real idea how to predict performance.  Writers lke Dan Shaugnessy have more or less said this outright in justifying their immediate support for Thomas and suspicions of Piazza and Bagwell.

bobbysf
bobbysf

@dave27a I don't think the post from Baseball Factory is saying that Mike definitely won't reach the 75% mark. It's simply the results of ballots known up to this point, and should be viewed as a projection tool. We should understand that the same methodology based on similar volume size at this time the last two years projected the eventual results perfectly. Last year at this time it had Biggio barely missing it and Mike in the 60s. Previous year, it had Larkin above 75.

@chasesimms No way, man! Don't worry. He'll get in. If not this year, next year. Start planning your trip to Cooperstown!

@Joe Wenzel@Bryan McEntee It is a performance enhancer. The only reason it was banned in 2002 and not 1991 is because Selig wouldn't risk a work stoppage. Otherwise andro and a bunch of other substances would have been banned long before they eventually were

Major League Baseball also banned it afterwards. Mike was engaged in legalized cheating at the time thanks to MLBPA delay tactics in allowing PEDs to be banned
