Jason Bay is injured; what will happen in the outfield?

The Mets announced Jason Bay has a non-displaced fracture in his rib, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The situation in the outfield certainly changes with this injury. At the very least, it probably grants Kirk Nieuwenhuis an extension on the big league roster (which he deserves, anyway) once Andres Torres returns. But while Torres continues to rehab with Single-A St. Lucie, I wonder if Terry Collins will look at Jordany Valdespin in centerfield, and move Nieuwenhuis over to left field to replace Bay, rather than relegate Valdespin to the bench and have Scott Hairston in center.

Valdespin began working out in the outfield when both Andres Torres and Scott Hairston got injured during camp, and he played in the outfield for Triple-A Buffalo in the games leading up to his promotion last night. If anything, it’s an opportunity for Valdespin to show his versatility and give both he and Nieuwenhuis an extended look at the big league level. To me, if Nieuwenhuis and Valdespin is on the big league roster, they need to play so to be able to continue to get regular at-bats and develop. This scenario accomplishes that and also allows the team to evaluate exactly what they have in two young players.
