MLB: New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies

Zack Wheeler’s last five starts have been terrific

Zack Wheeler tossed 108 pitches Friday night, struck out nine, and was charged with one run in 6.2 innings pitched.

It was his fifth-straight start allowing one earned run and pitching at least six innings, during which the Mets are just 3-2.

“I was able to repeat all my mechanics,” he said after the game, during which he also hit two batters. “The biggest thing for me is just repeating everything.”

Wheeler, 24, is now 5-8 with a 3.64 ERA this season.

zack the man.  Tulo is always hurt

I dont want to give up the farm for Tulo.....but why would any hitter with a brain NOT want to be a met with the sick pitching staff we obviously have? The mets pitching staff, if harvey is harvey next year, will be a top 3 staff in all of the majors.

Thor, montero, flores, nimmo, plawecki, newenheis. Any combination up to all to get tulo and cargo. Now.cy can go on the trip with them as a bag carrier. Hell, give em bonilla too while were at it!!!!!

cy for juan today, ey jr in left... why the hell is it so hard to put cambell in left feild??????

Dealing for a guy like Tulo does SO MUCH more than just securing a top MLB shortstop. A move like this changes the culture of a franchise and sends a message to high-end free agents that this team wants to win. Remember, historically, when the Mets were sputtering below mediocrity and made bold moves for Keith Hernandez, then years later for Mike Piazza, and how those transactions jump-started eras of success?

A move of this nature gives us a SHOT this year at the postseason, and makes us an instant contender next year (when you add a healthy Matt Harvey to a great pitching staff). And, needless to say, if they can secure Tulo AND CarGo for 2 young arms and 2 young bats, you do it, period! Come on Sandy, get it done ...

Id rather see the Mets make a run at Melky this off-season than do any of these proposed trades.

Dodgers are trying hard to trade Kemp. I wonder if the Mets are in on him.

We're not moving any of the FANTASTIC FOUR (Harvey/Wheeler/DeGrom/Thor). Who knew Thor was part of the Fantastic Four? huh?

Jay Cross
Jay Cross

What a bust. Should've kept Beltran.

yankeehater

Cant believe Peavy netted the Giants 2nd and 11th best prospects. I think we would have been jumping for joy just to get the 11th for Colon.

Omar Chaplin
Omar Chaplin

I hope the mets are not dumb and trade this kid

donw
donw

Before we go crazy moving Colon, remember that even if Harvey is Harvey next year, he is likely to be on an innings limit.  Remember Nats shut down Strasberg in his first year back; and they probably would have won the pennant if they didn't.  Colon can help spread out Harvey's innings so we don't have to shut him down in September which would really suck if we're in contention for playoffs.

queva

Finally Wheeler is making a move to replace Harvey as the ace to the Mets pitching staff.

yankeehater
yankeehater

All this talk about how much we'd have to sacrifice for a guy like Tulo is the reason the Mets are so dumb for not going after these Cubans as they become available. Two legit offensive players will be on the market between now and the end of the year.....lets see if the Mets make either one a serious offer.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

The Mets should just hang onto their assets. The only players I would move is Colon and Murphy (his play at 2B is offensive and I've had enough of his nonsense). Their pitching will carry them into the playoffs next year if they just wait for D'arnaud and Flores to mature and make the one solid FA move. If you move Wheeler or DeGrom, we will regret it. Noah is untouchable, please stop talking about it.

Merrill Needham
Merrill Needham

Would love to nsee a rotation of Harvey, Wheeler, Neise, deGrom and Gee.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

Yea but there is also something else that you have to consider. Tulo is not a pending FA that can force his way to another team. He is locked up through either 2019 or 2020 I can't remember which. What prospects do the Yankees have that are better than what we can offer? Tulo will be able to decide what he wants to do based off where COLARADO decides they want to send him. If st. Louis and the Mets are offering better deals than the Yankees, Tulo will have to decided between them or anyone else otherwise he will not be traded at all

dwright5
dwright5

Melky really man?? We need pop not punch n judy

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

And by you're logic we will also never get a big bat because we are not going to lure any here in FA and if you think Montero is getting it done in a trade you should probably never post again

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@Jay Cross  And it took him all of 38 starts to get here. What a waste of time.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

And you can see how well that worked for the Nat's. Not only did not pitching Stras get them bounced early , Stras has never been the same since his surgery. We need to remember also. There is a chance Harvey leaves as a FA when his time comes. Let's remember who his agent is now. Goes by the name of Scott Bora's. Harvey will be going to the highest bidder. We should get as much out of him as possible

crafalko17
crafalko17

@queva I'm okay with having 3 aces, no one needs to replace anyone =)

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@queva  It's not out of the realm of possibility. Wheeler has a better curveball.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@yankeehater Unfortunately the biggest players from the Cuban market are already gone. I still don't understand how after seeing Puig and Cespedes perform and hearing how Abreu is the best hitter of them we don't make a play on him for 10/mil a season. It's a joke.

dwright5
dwright5

Our current offense will get us into the playoffs?? Have you watched a game this season. Our 3b is on pace to hit 12 homers. Come on now

yankeehater
yankeehater

@cleonsvan I think they probably need 2 solid FA bats, but i pretty much agree with you. Im not sold on Flores being anything more than average. Darnaud is going to be putting up Lecroy numbers in 2 years.

yankeehater
yankeehater

@dwright5 12 hrs and 50 rbi's thus far, great defender, speed, 300 hitter. lead-off guy, rocket arm, not even 30 yet.....in a heartbeat.

metsbb76
metsbb76

@mets2death @citifield I heard a stat last night that his career average at Citi is over .400 with 5 home runs. Chris Carlin said that.

mattchless
mattchless

Not true. It wasn't the right time back then. This offseason Yasmani Tomas, a young Corner OF from Cuba is who we should sign. Our biggest organization weakness is OF power. Adding him along with Conforto and Nimmo only a year away gives us the offensive pieces we need.

I would not move Harvey Wheeler Thor DeGrom. Eff that. Neise/Gee I could see moving one. Colon should go. Still have hopes for Fulmer. Montero hopefully rebuilds some value.

Would I move Murphy? Potentially because I believe in Flores and Herrera.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@yankeehater  Just remember Flores is only 22. Too early to give up on him and he needs to take his lumps at the ML level before the light finally goes on. He has a good eye and goes to right well with power. I just think he is mentally overmatched right now...and the Mets are not exactly helping his confidence. I don't think they need two offensive FAs with Plawecki and Herrera on the horizon in 2016. They must move Murphy however. It will happen.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

Yes but in this situation were talking about this off season. And if we have a shot at Tulo we should go for it. Not sit around and wait until the Yanks accumulate enough assets to trade for him. Tulo might see that were on the upswing and the Yanks will constantly be going downhill and choose us

dwright5
dwright5

I don't think the mets can take a chance to turn the franchise around with names like melky kemp or Cruz. To me there is only 1 that gets it done. Tulo!!

nym68
nym68

@mattchless Conforto and Nimmo are only a year away? A year away from what exactly...AAA? One has played a week of professional baseball and the other has played a couple of years in organized baseball. I think we need to give both of them a little bit more time before we proclaim them ready....my god how you make my head hurt

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@mattchless  Excellent post. I agree 100%. And let's not forget Steven Matz who now they are ecstatic about.

dwright5
dwright5

No I read it but you said our pitching will carry us into the playoffs next year?? Our pitching will carry us into the playoffs next year with the same offense? Not a chance

crafalko17
crafalko17

@cleonsvan @dwright5 Sign Tomas and trade for Tulo while only losing 1 of Thor/Wheeler/deGrom. It can be done.

So we have TdA at Catcher/Duda at 1B/Murph or Flores or Soup at 2B for a year/Wright at 3B/Tulo at SS/Tomas in LF/Lagares in CF/Granderson in RF. Just think about that for a minute. While still having Harvey/Niese/ and 2 of our young trio.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@cleonsvan @yankeehater I agree, I just think he'd be another Murph at 2B. Rather they left him at AAA playing every day and use him as part of a deal for a team that needs a 3B. I'm not sure how KP/Herrera help this team get better offensively though...

Peter Loibl
Peter Loibl

@mets2death @Peter Loibl Yes, that is a good point ... but let's assume, for argument's sake, that Tulo approves a potential move to Queens. What would it take? Would a package that includes Thor get it done? Wheeler?

yankeehater
yankeehater

@mets2death There wont be a bidding war....its all about prospects and we have the Yankees beat in that regard.

mattchless
mattchless

Yes, a year away from AAA and being Sept callups. I don't mean a year away from being All Stars. I think we can be WS contenders from 2016-2020 easily if we play our cards right. I don't need to mortgage a great 5-8 year run to satisfy the impatient.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  Next year with Flores/'Dárnaud maturing PLUS one FA signing. Clearly we need one more hitter like Cruz for LF.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@crafalko17 @cleonsvan @dwright5  I'm not trading any of the FANTASTIC FOUR (Harvey, Wheeler, DeGrom, Thor). Gee, yes, Montero, yes but no one else. The Mets aren't spending all that money on a Cuban and Tulo's  contract anyways, so its a moot point.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@crafalko17  Flores has better hands and a natural feel defensively than Murphy. He's just a tad slow footed. But really there will be no comparison once Flores is comfortable there. Think about it--Flores can play short at the ML level (although not very well), but Murphy, you wouldn't even think of it. As far as KP/DH I'm talking 2016, still a couple of years away.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

Most likely one of Wheeler/Thor, Flores, and Montero. Maybe even another lower tier prospect or maybe Plawecki instead of Flores

dwright5
dwright5

I hope you are right but I still think we need a legit guy that we can pencil in for 25-100. U aren't getting that through FA

dwright5
dwright5

So will you give them gee and neise and smith?? I would

crafalko17
crafalko17

@cleonsvan @crafalko17 Don't think KP makes it to the majors with the Mets with TdA there. Too much value for a backup. I would still rather trade Flores and have Herrera come in to 2B without being blocked. Flores just feels like a corner for me. I don't think any scout outside of the Mets sees Flores as a SS and a borderline 2B.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

And as I responded to you down below it doesn't matter how badly he wants to be a Yankee. He has already signed on long term with Col. If the Yankees aren't offering anything worth trading him for, then they won't be an option for him. The ball is in Colarados court

Jeff Babcock
Jeff Babcock

Buster Olney said he doesn't have a no trade clause. He has a salary escalator if he gets traded. 5 million I think.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  We just need a middle of the pack offense. We don't have to be giant killers with this dominant pitching. That is why, although it seems counterintuitive, we need to move Murphy. 2B defense is critical. We could sign Cruz next year, right?

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  You need that one vet with all them youngsters. I would not trade both. I would move Montero.

dwright5
dwright5

I disagree. Look at teams that win the World Series they all have a 25-100 guy. The giants with that pitching had posey have MVP seasons

dwright5
dwright5

You would still have colon and can always sign a guy like him in the future

Peter Loibl
Peter Loibl

@mets2death You mention hypotheticals not being viable, then bust out a 3-team trade concept including a Yankees team with no real young pieces to deal?

yankeehater
yankeehater

@citifield Morse is a defenive hack and he's one dimensional.....id rather have Melky.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  I guess the best case I can make for my argument would be the 69 Mets.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  Nah, we need to move the money to replace it for someone like Cruz. Just thinking like Sandy would. But we might have no choice since no one wants a 42 year old.

dwright5
dwright5

That's a long time ago lol

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@dwright5  I know. I remember it. But baseball today is more like that era now that steroids are gone. The era of the 3/4 guys with 30+ homers is over.

Billy Suede
Billy Suede

@cleonsvan @dwright5 don't count on that going forward with the offense being deflated as much as it has been. the blowback has already started.

dwright5
dwright5

I know but most teams today that win have at least one guy that is 30-100. We have none my man
