Zack Wheeler believes the Mets will spend money on next year’s roster, a team he hopes to still be part of, he told columnist Kevin Kernan (NY Post, Aug. 28).
“How could you not spend money?” Wheeler said to Kernan. “You’re in New York. I know the Wilpons. I’ve been around them awhile now. I know they want to win. It’s just a matter of putting the right pieces together, formulating it all and making a winner.’’
According to New York reporter Andy Martino’s sources, in return for a player like Cubs SS Starlin Castro, while the Mets might consider trading Wheeler and Wilmer Flores, the Cubs would again want more, such as Noah Syndergaard or Jacob deGrom.
“I don’t want to be traded,” Wheeler told Kernan. “We’re only going to get better when the guys we got here get more experience and spend a little bit of money, making trades, get some better bats and stuff. … I was part of the rebuilding process and I want to see it through.’’
