Zach Wheeler escaped the fifth inning… this time.

Zack Wheeler struck out 10 batters and let up one run Friday, but the one run was scored by the Marlins in the fifth inning.

“I was thinking, ‘Man, it’s always the fifth that comes up and bites me,'” Wheeler said after the game (ESPN, Apr. 25).

In five starts this season, Wheeler has allowed 13 runs, nine of which crossed home plate during his fifth inning on the mound.

He wriggled through two runners on base in the sixth inning to end his night.

“You’ve got to make big pitches at certain points during the game,” he added. “That’s what I did.”

Zach tries to make every pitch perfect, like a lot of young pitchers. He doesn't have that kind of control yet. When he gets that, and can rely on his secondary pitches, he'll be very tough to beat.

In the meantime, he'll throw 100 pitches in 6 innings

Here's an idea: Try not throwing 96 MPH fastballs to the pitcher in the third inning. Maybe you'll have something left in the tank.

Great start last night from Wheels. The next step for him is going deeper in games. You'd like to have your starter make it to the 7th if hes dominating hitters like wheeler was last night

My dream? is this  happening soon....Harvey 19-9 250 k's.......Wheeler 15-7 170 k's......Thor 16-9  200 k's   Montero 13-10 150 k's  ... Gee 12-9 140k's or Niese  12-9 140k's

In other news Ike Davis is 0 for his last 11. I don't hear everyone complaining about Ike being traded now!!

Zach has very good stuff and is improving ..wouldn't be surprised to see him win 15-16  and strike out 150-170 batters in the coming years.

Quit bitching about Wheeler. He got the win and did a good job keeping the Marlins with only 1 run.  See an awful lot of woulda, shoulda, coulda on this blog for a team that is has only 5 teams ahead of them in the win loss record in both the AL and NL Leagues.

Zack's a different pitcher in the stretch. Its so obvious he doesnt have it down. It affects his FB location badly.

I can't wait until syndergaard comes up and has a "rough outing" of 6 innings and 1 run ball.. this board is going to have a stroke every time he doesn't throw a perfect game

Jose Abreu watch: 9 HR, 27 RBI.  Guess MLB pitching hasn't found the holes in his swing yet.

Once Wheeler learns to pitch to contact more rather than trying to K everyone, his pitch count will improve and he will be more efficient. When that happens, look out NL.

You will see more lines of 7-8 ip 7 k's rather than 5-6 ip 10k's.

I love this kid's stuff and make up.

any chance this game is delayed?

We will be playing for the sweep tomorrow. Can't wait to see Mejia shut the Marlins down tonight and I think we will see a Curtis granderson home run. Optimistic? Yes. Impossible? Not even close

Is anyone else wondering how much better this team will be with a healthy Lagares? I am jay hoping he can keep up the hitting like he was before his injury.

Trade Gee and Chris Young to the Yankees for Brett Gardner l

He's got to learn to overcome himself, and when he accomplishes that LOOK OUT!!!!! Go Zack Go!

Wheeler needs to go to vegas? I honestly feel some of you just write this stuff to get people irritated lol so weird

In the past 3 years we've had Carlos Torres, Aaron Laffey, Colin Mchugh, Mike pelfrey, Chris Schwinden, and Shawn Marcum in our starting rotation at one point. Anybody saying Zack isn't ready or Gould be spending time in vegas obviously has a very short memory. This is as good of a starting rotation as we've had in a while. If Zack Wheeler is my team's rotation's weakest link I'll take that any day of the week

@whizz17 Frankly I never understood that reaction  after the trade  when so many fans were ready to throw Ike under a bus than back over him to be sure he was dead before that.

@whizz17 And Pirates placed their #1 catcher Martin and their closer Grilli on the DL today

@Steven Glansberg Mets fans are so stressed from losing that anyone who isn't perfect 100% of the time will get trash talked. That is just how it will be for a while.

@Steven Glansberg  Difference between Thor and Wheeler is that Thor has location and his secondary pitches especially the curveball is better then Wheeler's but I think Montero will be more likely ready to come up and become better then Wheeler

Not the whole board, just the idiots.

@getalife  Could've been a Met, too bad some of these fans in here were against it and our owners are cheap

@ac0814  He's been irratic since the minors, also his secondary pitches are pretty weak, Only good thing about him is his FB. Hopefully things work out in the future but I wouldnt hold my breath

Gee alone would net gardner and prob a prospect. Don't underestimate pitching

@Steven Glansberg People have unrealistic expectations for Wheeler because they are expecting another Harvey, anything less than starting the All Star game this year is going to be a disappointment for those people.

@brian2740 Your lucky to even have me read your stupid post. 10 strikeouts and he did not pitch a good game?  Your Lame!

@brian2740  In your opinion, 6 IP, 4H, 10K/3BB, 1ER vs. the team that at the time had scored  the 2nd most runs in the NL...what did Wheeler need to do in order for YOU to consider this a "good" pitched game.

The Feels band

@brian2740  Do you think you're more fit to judge him more than his game score? Which was his second best start in the major leagues...

eavdr10

@brian2740 Should Wacha go back to triple AAA too??? All of these innings, mistakes, misfortunes etc. are INVALUABLE!! It will make him better. He's a K pitcher, young ones usually struggle with command and pitch count. They all don't burst onto the scene

Sal
Sal

@brian2740  So other than your opinion, do you have any stats to back up your claim that he should be in AAA?

Here's some stats.  He's averaging almost 10k/9IP, has a FIP of under 3, is giving up only 0.6 HR/9IP and has a BABIP of .349 - which over time should normalize and come down.

And regarding the men on base issue - he's stranding 74% of men on base - right in line with where most pitchers in the league are.

His power and strikeout ability lead to a few more walks and longer at bats - but he also gets out of james with the same strengths.

He's already a solid major league pitcher, and is just beginning to learn how to harness his amazing talent.  And yet you want him sent to AAA.

Explain your rationale please.

BringBackDaveTelghe

@brian2740 Yeah that's a great idea.  He strikes out 10 in 6 innings, had his pitching moving, the team wins on a walk off hit and you have clowns here saying to send him down.  Don't even humor posters like this.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@brian2740 He struck out 10 in 6 innings, you can't call that luck my man. Sure he is wild, but his stuff is also pretty incredible. That one curve he threw in the 6th was Wainwright-like. He has nothing left to really learn in Vegas. Kid gives up 1 run in 6 innings vs the 2nd best offense in the NL while striking out 10 and you want to send him down.

Also keep in mind it is his first full season in the bigs and he had a mid-3 ERA last season. None of this is a fluke. He's good right now, if he can ever hone in on his FB location he can become something great, but you don't need to be great to be here =)

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Jaime  Actually it isn't.  Both Bay and Holliday were in MLB.  Vets at that.  They had a history.  Pitchers only had film on Abreu from an exhibition tournament.  He's having a fantastic April.  No doubt.  How about we give him a few months....

Please, hold your breath. Hold it even when you feel like you need air.

@brian2740 @ac0814He's 1-2 because his team can't score more than 1 run or non at all. Period. Many teams would be glad to have him a part of their staff especially those who can put more than 3 runs up on the board. Noticed why he was so successful last night? He doesn't have to worry about being the first Mets pitcher to go perfect every time out.

nymetsrule

@ponzies86 @brownbear7Yeah because a fan on a message board talking about a pitcher has enough power in the universe to cause an unbreakable jynx.

That and I think granderson is about to bust out in a big way. He has been making good contact with balls and fouling them off rather than whiffing at everything

Sure, why not. That way the same people can complain about him being at LV and not NY.
