Wright to Mets, regarding All-Star campaign: Back it down a little.

David Wright told reporters Thursday that he recently asked the Mets to “kind of back it down a little bit,” in regards to how hard they are pushing fans and to vote him in to the All-Star game, “especially with the stuff in-between innings.”

“You appreciate what they’re trying to do and they’re very goodhearted, but to me this is a team game,” Wright said. “As much as I’d like to be here to represent this team in the All-Star game, we can’t let this become an in-between inning, one-player production.”

Yesterday, the Mets acknowledged a Deadspin story reporting that they approached CougarLife.com about trying to help Wright get picked for the All-Star game, but later decided to pass.

“CougarLife voted David Wright as the ‘hottest cub.’ In our effort to expand All-Star balloting to wider audiences, so as to increase votes, we did reach out to CougarLife,” a team spokesman said. “Last year there was a big swing of votes at the end that cost David the starting job. We decided to do everything to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year. We ultimately elected to pass.”

Nice job, David. I like this approach. It’s always a difficult balance. I want him to be voted in, and I’m sure he wants to be voted in, but after a while it all starts to look like begging from the team… and that’s not good for anyone. At the same time, Giants fans are a massive voting machine that most National League teams will struggle to beat. I’ll say it again: the Giants draw the second most fans in baseball and they have an unbelievably effective social media team. They’re widely considered to be the best organization in sports at connecting with and motivating fans to act online. The Giants also have vote-enabled kiosks in their ballparks, in addition to traditional ballots, as well as free Wi-Fi throughout the park, which makes it easier for fans to vote at games using their mobile phone. So, even if this CougarLife thing worked, it would only have had a minimal impact…
