Wright struggling, in lineup Monday

David Wright is in today’s starting lineup (Mets Twitter, Aug. 4).

Wright is batting .197 during his last 18 games, during which he has no home runs and 16 strikeouts. He missed the week before the All-Star game resting a sore shoulder.

“When he struggles, he takes it personally,” Terry Collins said before Monday’s afternoon game.

Collins said he asked Wright a couple of days ago if he needed a day off, but the team captain said he would prefer to work out of this current funk in games.

Wright insisted he feels fine, repeating it four different times when asked about his health late Sunday.

“I’m not sure how else to put it,” Wright saids. “I’m just not getting the results I want. I just need to stop fouling off pitches I should be hitting, and not chasing so much.”

Wright is on pace to end the season with 550 at bats, while hitting .270 with roughly 12 HR, 70 RBI and a .721 OPS

“When you’re in something like this, when you don’t have it, you’re guessing wrong and it seems like you’re swinging before the ball is out of the pitcher’s hand, sometimes it takes only one swing where you feel something click and you have your confidence back,” Wright said.“I wish I could just snap my fingers and go 20 for the next 20, but unfortunately it hasn’t gone that way quite yet.”

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

This would have been a good day to give him a rest. The Mets return to action tomorrow night, meaning Terry could have given him about 48 hours off. However, resting Wright today would also stink for people (specifically kids) paying to watch the team at home today at 12 p.m.

In either case, he looked really agitated Sunday night when reporters kept asking if his shoulder is contributing to his slump. He’s looked fine in the field, so I’m disinclined to think it’s pain. The Mets have faced a bunch of very good starting pitchers these last two weeks, and that – more than anything – can make a batter press and get out of sync. Wright hit .364 in the nine games after his trip to the DL, then it was the All-Star break, so it’s not like he sat out and started slumping. He was actually swinging well. It was after the All-Star break – which coincided with better competition – that he started struggling.

Hey TC, i think you doing a good job but. I just have to ask. Are you mandated to play CY or are you intent on torturing this fan base?

I turn on the TV and the first batter I got to see is Chris Young ? Why is he in the starting line up ?  Also Ruben T and Bobby A   time to go !

With Wright not hitting well...I wonder if hes on a decline?...hopefully not....but if he is the contract Sandy signed him to wont look good at all.

The Mets really need to figure out if they can trade Wright.  If they refuse to put good hitters around him, it is a total disservice to him.  Is it really such a mystery that he crushed when hitting behind Reyes and in front of Beltran?  Could it be any bigger joke than having terrible leadoff hitters in front of him and Granderson behind him to start the season?  And does anyone really think pitchers are scared enough of Duda to actually pitch to Wright?

David should have been given the day off regardless of what Mr Wright wanted. All other players are given days off what makes David so special. He is not exactly ripping the skin off the ball and at the moment he is hurting this lineup and he continues to play. He should have not played Friday after having off Thursday. That would have given him a complete 2 days of rest. So today he plays again. Hopefully he can shut us all up and carry the team on his back as he often tries to do and win us a ball game today. Don't get me wrong David as well as anyone in the majors goes through its up's and downs, however what David states David gets and that's to play even at times when he doesn't deserve to.

So let me get this straight. Wright is struggling and yes he is the face of the franchise....I get that. But Murphy, Duda, and d'arnaud are all swinging the bat very well. And Collins benches all 3 if them 2 of them b/c they were facing a lefty. Last I checked these guys are Pros. Havent they been babied enough already!

Wright was a terrible signing anyway. He's been declining for what, 5 years now? He has proven that his game isn't suited for City Field. The place is a ghost town on most nights anyway, so you can't argue that they needed a draw to bring the fans to the park. We should have let him walk.

the guy is a 5 batter... im actually starting to wonder if they should just bat him 5th now...i know we dont have a 3 or 4 batter...but Duda hits 4th, maybe move Murph to 3rd, and darnaud to 2nd? and just plant wright in the 5th spot for the rest of his life?.....i expect them to get a SS & LF this offseason that will fill the 3, 4 spots, so maybe we can let wright get comfortable at 5 now

I would think if you were trying to win, resting him against "division foes" in DC/Philly would be harder, no?

Six more years of Wright's mediocrity at top dollar.  Trading him and using that money elsewhere would have been so much better as part of a rebuild.  He is not a guy that you build your team around.

if only they ask the real questions... how come tejada ,cy.ey and abreu are on the team and start over flores and campbell

Oren Gradus
Oren Gradus

Tejada, WHY?!?! He literally looks like a

pudgy nine year old playing with adults (and hits like one!). I'm sick of it! He and CY are automatic outs, AUTOMATIC!!! Why do you even bother bringing poor Flores up? He poses a "threat" when he's batting - Tejada hardly ever hits the ball past the infield! The kid goes down rakes at AAA and you bring him up to sit behind this garbage, this little leaguer - pathetic. That's the reason why I'm not at the game today! Get a freakin' clue TC, Sandy, whoever is making this asinine call!!!! I'm done.

Bob Higgins

@Albert E Lewis  I hope not either . If his shoulder is bugging him shut him down ! He looks lost ! I blame him getting married more then the shoulder ,

@hashburry  Who would take him with that contract ? Nobody would I think his best days are behind him .

He was great the last 2 years with not much help. This year Duda has been great, Murph and Grandy have been solid and Wright is having his worst year. It's not the others in the lineup

vandelay
vandelay

He was elite in 2012 and 2013, that's not a 5 year "decline"

rustysribs
rustysribs

@Aurora Snow He's had no real support in the lineup. He tries to do too much because he was given the responsibility of being "the" guy as opposed to a strong complimentary player which was always what he was. When guys like Delgado and Beltran were in the lineup it was a totally different scenario.

vandelay
vandelay

He's not a "5 batter". He's a career 135 OPS+ .378 OBP guy. That's good enough to hit anywhere in the lineup and certainly profiles more as one of the top spots in lineup. If Wright isn't a "3 hitter" than Murph who puts up a .340 OBP in his "great" year, certainly isn't

Sal
Sal

@tk2120 This is more than reasonable.  If nothing else, he's in a horrific slump at a time where the team is trying to claw back into something resembling a race for a WC spot.

Greater players than wright have accepted temporary changes in the batting order.  The Mets need to actually play their best players (no more CY, Abreu or Tejada) and get more at bats to the guys that are hitting.

I don't understand how a front office that is so "data driven" hands the keys to the castle to a manager who continually ignores evidence when making decisions.

@jrb74 he cant have a bad year?

Mike Herrington

@vandelay Granderson is hitting .228 or the lowest average he ever had in his career, same as slugging pct. Many others at career lows as well.

Marc Singleton
Marc Singleton

@rustysribs I'm tired of that argument.  Plenty of major league hitters have put up good numbers despite not having "support in the lineup."

People want to believe that Wright is some sort of superstar.  He's not.  He's an above average, very good major league player.

Aurora Snow
Aurora Snow

@rustysribs Line-up protection is a complete myth, it's been disproven a thousand times, and still people rest their arguments on it.

tk2120
tk2120

@vandelay youre right..but my point isn't where to put Murphy, its where to put Wright....your best hitter bats 3rd, your power guy bats 4th.... what they need is a new best hitter & a new power guy to enable Wright & Duda to slide to 5 & 6...whether Murph or Wright his 1/2, 2/3, or 7/8, the lineup isnt complete

tk2120
tk2120

@Sal yep! i love DW..everyone does..but we knew he wasn't re-signed (over Reyes, which i will go to my grave knowing we kept the right guy, if they only planned on keeping one) to hit 40 hr and drive in 120... he's a compliment guy.. and he's marketable.. hey guess what, he's not the next Jeter, was never going to be...but when did Jeter hit 3rd or 4th and drive in 120 runs or hit 30-40 HR? Never..... So, in fact, Wright has been, and will continue to be the next Jeter. A complimentary player that handles the media and puts up respectable numbers while being the 3rd, 4th, 5th best offensive player on the team....what really stinks, though, is that the Mets aren't the Yankees and they don't build AROUND Wright the way the Yanks built AROUND Jeter....they build directly THROUGH Wright, and theres a huge difference because Wright is now responsible for more than what he is capable of. So like I said, I expect this to be changed, and if I know this, I'd imagine Sandy knows this, and Wright will get his help next year or the year after.....or the year after lol... but, as long as Wright is our 3 batter, he's going to struggle, because he's not that type of hitter.... I've always wanted Murphy & Wright to be 1/2 because that's their game... Wright can start taking more walks, be less aggressive, go the other way, because it clearly doesn't work for him.. When you bat 3rd, you have to be a different hitter... Hey, guess who else had that problem, Carlos Beltran..... everwhere he's played, he's hit 2 or 5...he comes here & he's expected to be Griffey, and he struggled with it.... it's not the players, its the system, and i think they're starting to change it, but until they do, the results wont change.

Aurora Snow
Aurora Snow

@mi @jrb74 How many bad years are you spotting him here? He hasn't really given top star type productivity in 5 years.

tk2120
tk2120

@Aurora Snow @rustysribs its not lineup 'protection' its support... Wright's role changed when he went to the 3 spot. The 3 batter is your best hitter, and Wright shouldn't be your best hitter (because he clearly isn't)... if we had a team around him to allow him to be the 5th or 6th batter, his numbers will change significantly, because he'll be able to return to his patient, opposite field hitting self..... when you bat 3rd, you're doing everything from getting on, getting over, getting in...Wright was never that guy... i just answered below to a guy....Wright is our Jeter... Solid player, marketable, handles media....when has Derek Jeter EVER been the #1 guy in a lineup? 0 times... yet Jeter is allowed to play his slap hitting, hustling game because he has 4, 5, 6 other guys putting the ball all over the field...when Wright has that kind of 'support,' he's a better hitter because of it.

vandelay
vandelay

Other than this year Wright is every bit good enough to be a top of the lineup hitter. If we are judging just on this year than he hasn't been...but then if we are judging just by this year Duda is every bit a #4 hitter

They aren't getting 2 hitters better than normal Wright. Maybe we he our wish and get Tulo (who while significantly better this year than Wright but not really career wise) he can hit 3 (in which case Id probably hit DW 2nd...or you could go with DW 3rd, Tulo 4) but we aren't getting 2 hitters of that caliber. The other guy talked about Cargo has been even more miserable than Wright this year and not as good career wise

tk2120
tk2120

@vandelay i want little to do with tulo, and less to do with cargo... i'm not saying at his best, he cant bat 3rd...but, i like him 5th..and this team is set with 2 guys better than him...thats really all im saying..and yeah, duda...if this team goes into next year thinking they are competent 3 & 4 guys, its gonna be a long 2015 too.....i like them 5 & 6 much better

Aurora Snow
Aurora Snow

@mi @Aurora Snow @jrb74 2012 was far and away his best year in the last five, and he had 112 RBI. Very very good year, but by far the aberration of his past five. His batting average has declined for the most part, he's had a bad .OBP in 3 of the last 5 years, and he has had flat out bad power numbers. He's not worth his salary for a team with an 85 million dollar payroll.

tk2120
tk2120

@rustysribs @Aurora Snow i know..but its real.... thats why teams try to get good players lol... id much rather pitch to this mets team than say, the 06 team...because you look at it & say ok, i cant let wright, murphy, duda, granderson beat me....everyone else not so bad...but when you have 6, 7 guys deep that can put the ball outta the park, the pitcher works harder... its simple...i get it that if youre a good hitter, you can hit no matter who is behind you..but, you cant say it doesnt change the outlook of a lineup...it changes the whole dynamic of every at bat

vandelay
vandelay

@tk2120 @vandelay Well every team would be better if you get hitters better than their current best hitters.  But if Wright is normal Wright, you aren't going to find two hitters better than him - those guys just aren't going to be available

vandelay
vandelay

He was great in 2012 and great last yr as well. The 5th most valuable player and 6th best hitter in MLB over that time period

mi

@Aurora Snow @mi @jrb74 go take a look at players making 20 mil.. david has the highest war of them all but miggy

rustysribs
rustysribs

@tk2120 @rustysribs @Aurora Snow Very true. Wright has changed his whole approach at the plate and should never have had to. He doesn't relax at the plate maybe because he has had no support around him to take the pressure off. Hopefully that can change for him at some point. He needs to drive those outside pitches to the opposite field again.

tk2120
tk2120

@rustysribs @Aurora Snow  yeah we'll see who else they can add...whether it makes him a better hitter or not, they still need 2 more very good bats...if he still sucks, then whatever lol
