David Wright 2

Wright and Murphy will get day off soon

David Wright has played every game this season, while Daniel Murphy has played in every game since being on paternity leave.

Terry Collins told reporters Monday that he has a plan for giving a day off to each player, but he would not say when it would happen.

The Mets will travel to Chicago and San Francisco on their current road trip. It is expected Wright and Murphy will each get a day off at some point before the team returns home.

Mets reporter Adam Rubin speculates that Murphy will be off Thursday, when the Mets face Cubs LHP Travis Wood, since left-handed hitters are batting .161 against him (ESPN, June 2).

Line up posted. Wright & Murph both in. More useless TC spin. Why do they even let him do interviews? Ugh.

TC is going to mess with Murph's rest day now that he is invited to the White House to talk paternity leave next Monday.

I'd give Wright the day off in the final game of the SF series which is a day game after a night game with Lincecum on the mound who Wright is a career .130 hitter against. That seems like a pretty obvious spot to me. I def don't want to sit him vs the Cubs as they are bad and I'd like for the Mets to try and beat up on them. I'd prefer to sit Murph vs SF as well since they are really good and have 3 tough pitchers going so it may be pretty difficult to win there anyway. I'd sit Murph vs Cain or Hudson in 1 those 1st 2 games neither of which he's done much against in his career

TC has been saying that since last week and nothing has happened Another obvious lie from the management.

I would sit them in the Giants series instead, tough series anyway, play them against the Cubs, take advantage of a bad team, Murph love hitting in Chicago, get them some well deserved rest in San Francisco and get them fresh for the home series against the Brewers.

While I don't want to get too optimistic, it is so much better to look at each of your starting pitchers (and the improved pen) and think we have a decent chance of winning each night...then I look at the offense and realize it is best to be cautious about expectations

Murphy is looking like he could use a day off. He's made some boneheaded blunders recently, particularly in the field. Not that he's usually a great fielder, but he is usually great with fundamentals, and he hasn't been.

They'll get a day off soon but, right now, we need these games so they play.

The team is close. Close to .500, close to the division and close to the wild card. Wright had two RBIs yesterday and has been great in the field while Murphy played 161 games last year so he's not one to take time off.

If they need a easy they'll get one. Right now the team needs them.

Except that's an exceedingly stupid speculation since Murphy has crushed left handed pitching.

In 2014 he's batting 339 with an 850 OPS.

What I just don't get is that TC held both of them out of ST games to avoid injury and yet, they've played just about every inning of every game which  causes fatigue and like Ron Darling said that can lead to injury. Yes, they're professional athletes but those extra inning games would be tough on anyone - factor in that Wright is 31 now and Murphy right behind him. Pretty much every NL manager gives players a day off here and there because there's no opportunity to keep them in the game at DH role. Phillies rested Rollins and Utley. We are NOT in a pennant race so they can afford to take a day to refresh - can only help both their performance and that of the team in the long run.

More evidence that Collins is an idiot.  These guys should be getting a day off every now and then.  If there's an off day, he should give someone teh day before and someone else the day after, so they get 2 days off.

Yes, I realize the who's going to play argument.  But if you don't get these guys a blow once in a while, they wear out and aren't prodcutive anyway.

I don't know if any of you guys have played baseball, but if you aren't pitching or catching, there is no reason you need a game off. Most of the time you are standing around in the field or sitting in the dugout. These are professional athletes and should be able to play every game.

They both look gassed--and I'm sure the cheesesteaks didn't help on THAT front either. Murphy keeps making inexcusable mental errors as well (anybody catch that alleged 'slide' into home-plate last night?). Wright always rebounds after a night off.

Wilmer Flores will get a day off soon too

Anyone here losing faith in d'Arnaud yet? It's been a season and a half now, and this guy isnt even close to hitting major league pitching, his swing is just AWFUL!  I've seen Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, Mike Piazza, all when they came up to the majors, and d'Arnaud IS NOT even close to any of those guys, nor will he ever be!

Hey TC, can we at least wait until David goes into a slump before resting him?  I know how you like to give guys the day off after they have career days.

If TC is going to give Wright and Murphy a day off.....do it against the Cubs and not wait for the SF series.

He said he has a plan to give them both a day he didn't say it was happening today still a lot of games on the road trip

@Brian Webster Murph is like Babe Ruth at Wrigley. There's no way he sits any of the Cubs series.

Sitting either in the Giants series sends a bad message. It says "we know we probably won't win anyway so we're putting out the B line-up". Not good message to fans or the players. I bet they rest in Chicago where the B line- up has a darn good chance of winning.

Murphy isn't a great fielder and he's not a great baserunner either, but he can steal a base and he can hit.

We're not in a pennant race? What sport are you watching?

heynow20

That's not really true at the major league level.  On the fielding side maybe but on the hitting side, most players watch tape of the pitchers they are facing, analyze tendencies and work on their swings.  On the physical aspect you are correct, but there is also a huge mental aspect to hitting that can be draining, especially if things aren't going well.

@John Doerr No doubt, they can both have a day off, Monday, June 9

@Father Dooley I have been disapointed in his offense but because he is so very important for the future of this team I let him play every day an dfigure it out. We need to know what Travis is and this is time to do it. Even if he gets himself to .240 its a win.

defensivly I like what he is doing a lot and he is handeling the pitching staff pretty good.

spelletrader

I give him until Plawecki is ready, but he should get a shot batting higher in the order on occasion. He's currently batting to clear the pitchers spot and he might be losing focus.

@Father Dooley I was down on him after last year, but willing to give him another shot this year.  He's done nothing.  His offense is putrid and his defence is horrible.  I have not seen anything in him at all to make me optimistic about his future.

Kenneth Meltsner

@Father Dooley Am forced to agree with you, Father. The guy looks lost. And his defense has been a little shaky as well. I think I've actually forgotten what it's like to have a catcher that can actually HIT.

ventura_4
ventura_4

@Father Dooley it has not been a year and a half, it hasn't even been a half of a year. He's only played 66 Major League games.

Catchers have to figure out catching at this level, before hitting. Piazza and Bench are incredible exceptions. Take a look at Molina's first two full seasons. 2005 -  .252AVG, 8HR, 49RBI.... 2006 - .216AVG, 6HR, 49RBI.

It wasn't until his third full ML year until he started hitting. Travis has hit at every level - give him more than 66 games before you're ready to throw him away.

Father Dooley
Father Dooley

@ventura_4 @Father Dooley His swing concerns me - he is not even close on a lot of pitches; fooled badly on so many pitches I am not sure he is capable of improving with swings like that.  There was a pitch yesterday that must have been 2 feet outside of the strikezone, he could not have reached that pitch with a 6 foot bat yet he swung and missed miserably.  My concern is that there are too many swings like that.

Cheryl Ann
Cheryl Ann

@Marc Singleton @theglider Indeed. We won 4/5 against a clearly old and broken down team and, not for nothing, we didn't exactly blow them away in most of those wins. It's a weak division true but this line-up isn't built for much more than third place. The Braves keep adding pieces as do the Marlins. The Nationals won't stay this banged up forever. And, if you really think the Mets are or will be in a pennant race, all the more reason to give Murphy and Wright a day off now and keep them fresh. The real race will come second half - assuming we're still actually playing meaningful baseball after the All Star Break. Any "contending team" should be able to beat the Cubs with or without Wright/Murphy.  If we can't, then I argue that the Mets aren't really in contention.

@Father Dooley @ventura_4 It would also be nice if he had better protection than Tejada or the pitcher. I personally would hit him in the two hole - similar to LoDuca. It would be hard to move Murphy out of that slot though since he;s so comfortable there. I would hit Travis 2 and Murphy 5 or 6, I think he's a good enough hitter (Murphy) where he can survive with less protection.

@Father Dooley @ventura_4 I agree he is pressing abit now and reaching for balls that are unhittable.I just hope the concussion didn't effect him much and he comes around because I believe he can hit.
