Josh Lewin and Casey Stern expected to join WOR

710 WOR Radio will broadcast their first Mets game on Feb. 28 (WOR, Feb. 10), though they have still not officially announced their broadcast team.

12:30 am: Casey Stern is expected to be the new pre- and and post-game host for Mets radio broadcasts, according to multiple sources (Capital New York, Fed. 11).

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I hope this is true. Stern is a good guy and a smart and passionate Mets fan, who actually got his start winning a contest with the old MLB Radio. I met him a long time ago when I interned there. He now does terrific work hosting a show on MLB Network Radio with SiriusXM. He’s a perfect choice and a great way to get the broadcast team a bit younger, while further adding to what is essentially a team of Mets fans broadcasting Mets games. I like it!

8:30 pm: Josh Lewin will join Howie Rose in the booth, according to sources (Rubin, Feb. 11).

6:22 am: Jeff Wilpon and the Mets would like to have ex-player in the booth, according to people familiar with the process (Capital New York, Jan. 27). WOR had been planning to speak with Cliff Floyd and Darryl Hamilton to fill the role (Puma, Jan. 20).

Eddie Coleman is believed to be staying at WFAN, where he will continue as the network’s on-air beat reporter.

I have MLB Radio on Sirius so this is fantastic news because Casey Stern is awesome! He does a great job and really knows his stuff AND he's a Mets fan! Plus if Josh wasn't retained it would've been a travesty! He and Howie are one of the best duos in baseball! Not so sad about leaving WFAN now that this will be the broadcast team!

Of all the dramatic things!  Ugh I still can't believe the Yankees are going to be on WFAN.

Thank You. I don't mind them letting a Cliff Floyd getting some experience, but Howie should be treated as a Ralph Kiner, Bob Murphy, Gary Cohen type And Josh deserves to be back and given a chance to be a Mets voice for many years to come

Great that Lewin is coming over with Howie.  I really began to like Lewin last year.  Took a bit of getting used to his voice, but he's very entertaining on the radiocast.  One game I remember last summer he starts talking about how much of a non-issue Daniel Murphy's defense at second had become.  He says, "Coming from out of town, and from everything I'd heard, I expected Murphy to be sort of Herman Munster with a glove." Then he goes back to calling the game for a minute or so, before returning to his earlier thought.  He winds up this way, "instead he winds up to be somewhere between Fred Gwynne and Tony Gwynn."  It's inspired lunacy like that that I really like.  Plus, he always gets the call right and in a timely manner, unlike Wayne Hagin who would drive me crazy being late to finish executing the calls of the plays.  Good move!

Now can we please please please just get Alderson, et al. to stop talking about starting anyone other than Lagares in CF this season.

Lewin's back?  Well, OK I guess...As much as I love listening to Howie it's really hard listening to the old school guys that are ignorant of anything that's happened in the last 10 or 20 years and just put down anyone that has a progressive take on the game.

Will somebody please smack Jeff upside the head.  You do not NEED an ex-player in the both on radio.  You need a professional that can paint the picture for you not someone better fit for tv to tell you what you just saw.  If ythey can get one thing right get this right.

If you listen through MLB radio you may avoid the promos for Rush and Hannity shows. I can't believe putting the Mets on a station that features right wing talk radio is a smart business decision. I would think it would be a turn off to over half the fans in this market.

A bit depressing that "now Steve Somers" will be how Yankee broadcasts will end.

Been hearing unofficially that it will be Howie and Josh. Don't know why they haven't announced it yet unless they are ironing out a contract with at least one of them.

Cliff Floyd has been a broadcaster for NBC Sports Network, MLB Network and Fox Sports Florida. I believe he was calling games for the Marlins the past couple of years. Teaming him up with Howie Rose in the radio booth could be a great idea. Nothing against Josh Lewin but Howie is the best at what he does. He doesn't need to share time with another 'play by play' guy. Having him work with an ex-jock in the booth would bring a welcome and different viewpoint. Howie playing off the likes of Cliff Floyd could be a genius move.

And from the "What It's Worth" department, the last time the Mets made the playoffs, Cliff was on the team, if you believe in that kind of karma / superstitious crap. Just sayin'.

By the way, Darryl Hamilton does a nice job on MLB Network.

I would like to see Lewin return, I enjoy his sense of humor and he is kknowledge. Ultimately i dont think he will be back because I never got the sense that Howie liked him. Bring back Bob Murphy (RIP)

Cliff Floyd should be on the field not the booth Hitting or bench coach !!!

To be honest, I don't care if its just Howie in the booth for all nine innings. He's so good and he doesn't have to give up the mic to anybody for a couple innings a game if he doesn't want to IMO.

Brian, I get the games on satellite radio. Isn't it ridiculous that the Mets aren't making sure that their fans can hear the games in other NYS markets? How do you encourage people to come see your team if you aren't getting the product out there?

I'm sorry to say this, but only the Mets with two weeks to go before their first game on the radio would not have their broadcast team in place yet. Its this kind of stuff that really makes you scratch your head about who is actually running the show with this organization. I can't believe in this day and age we are going back to AM radio and the Yankees are now at the station we called home for many years. You just can't make it up. Oh, to be a Mets fan...

David Windsheimer

And why is it so important that an ex-jock is needed in the booth? That's just a typical case of "monkey-see, monkey-do" where "we have to do this because everyone else is doing it." Vin Scully has never needed help in the booth. Why not go in that direction?

Howie Rose IS the radio voice of the New York Mets, no ifs ands or buts.

The coke snorting de Blasio voters who want the wealthy to pay more, despite us already paying half our income in taxes, will not like it.

While I'm probably with you on many social issues, I can't stand idiot voters and politicians who want more than half my income.

hankypanky

Absolutely right. Putting the Mets logo on the same screen with the Joseph Goebbels of American media is an insult to the team and an insult to listeners like me.

@edrich1960  Agreed.  Cliff Floyd was always hilarious and smart while he was a Met.  I'd love to see him at least get a chance.  Best to try a few people, as it's really how they work together more than the individual talent that counts.

hankypanky

Obviously you haven't hears Floyd call a game. Like most players, he can run circles around most broadcasters.

Sylvan Migdal

@hankypanky  Kiner may have been old-school by definition, but he was certainly not ignorant or closed-minded about new ideas, and I doubt that's what the original poster meant.

metsfanman

@bleck319  de Blasio received over 73% of the vote, so it's not only "coke snorting" voters who supported his vision of lesser income inequality in our city. Personally, if I had a solid income (which I do not as of now as a student), I'd be happy to chip in to help fellow New Yorkers have their children receive  Pre-K education. But enough about political issues, this MetsBlog after all, Let's Go Mets!

Don't worry, Al "Freddy's Fashion Mart" Sharpton is only on MSNBC.

bleck319

Obviously I'm being facetious. I understand there are many people struggling in NYC and across America. But the solution is not to increase taxes on wealthy small business owners and corporations who hire the bulk of the workforce in this country. If this attitude persists, the wealthy and corporations will continue to find ways around the law to remain profitable, while the common folks still struggle and vote in dumb politicians who give them nothing but empty promises.

bleck319
bleck319

Ok Mr. Socialist. Glad you decide how to spend other people's money. There is no evidence this will improve high school dropout rates, income, etc....

Maybe when they are in their teens they should stop having babies out of wedlock! How about de Blasio denouncing that behavior! Of course not! Just keep stealing more than 50% from the wealthy and see where it gets you.

brachial
brachial

Oh please, it's a half percent increase only if you make more than 500,000 and only on the income above 500,000. I'm sorry you might have to cough up an extra 500 bucks to help finance universal pre-k. It really sucks making a real difference in kids lives.

bleck319
bleck319

Did you learn this as a student?

Top tax brackets for New Yorkers:

39.6% Federal

6.85-8.82% state

Nearly 4% city tax which de Blasio wants to raise

1.45% Medicare (employer)

1.45% Medicare (employee)

0.90% Obamacare tax

That's nearly 55% buddy.

And that doesn't include property, sales, utilities and parking taxes, or tolls.

So screw the pre-k until taxes are lowered and other areas of the budget are cut.

And how about cleaning the mountains of garbage bags on sidewalks next to restaurants so Manhattan doesn't smell like dog crap.
