David Wright, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jon Niese are the only players Jeff Wilpon considers to be locks for the 2014 roster, he said Tuesday, according to the Daily News.
Wilpon also indicated the team has five first baseman, some of whom are already drawing interest from outside organizations.
“Something has got to happen there with the logjam,” Wilpon said at the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield, N.J. as part of the team’s volunteer program on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. “There’s been some interest already. Where that interest goes and what that brings back, that you have to let play out a little bit.”

There are teams interested in Ike Davis, like the Rockies, because I think they see what he did in 2012 and wonder if he can be the next Chris Davis. In the event Davis is traded, which I think is quite possible, I bet Lucas Duda and Josh Satin split time at first base, assuming Sandy Alderson can acquire reliable power at another position.
It’s also worth noting that Wilpon did not mention Daniel Murphy in his list of core players. This is going to ruffle the #ImWith28 crowd. However, the way I understand it from team insiders, the Mets are not anti-Murphy. Instead, they know he has significant value and may be able to help upgrade their power by including him in a deal for an outfielder. In the end, if they can upgrade the overall lineup by taking a small step back at second base, I think they’ll do it.
