Sure, trade a 22-year old hitter that produces rbis in good numbers. The Mets had no one do this last year. Duda, the poster boy for leaving RISP, is confirmation that the Mets are losers.

You have to get this guy in the lineup....his bat is just too good on a team starved for hitters. His defense at 1B will be a drop off from Ike, but not much from Duda/Satin. The Mets need to either get his bat in this lineup or move him out of here....he's not playing 3rd and if he can't play somewhere else, he has no use on the team.

Flores needs to play every day somewhere...if Murphy isn't dealt, it won't be at 2B, and he's obviously not going to play 3B. He's clearly not an outfielder. That leaves 1B or a trade (or Vegas, which is preferable to a bench role on the big club).

Personally, I'd go bold here...assuming he doesn't crap the bed in ST, make 1B his job to lose.  I'd even go a step further and bat him third, between Murphy and Wright/Granderson  - the kid just looks like he was born to hit with guys on base, and he may already be their second best contact hitter (sadly).

Even though batting third would normally put a lot of pressure on a 22-year-old, insulating him with good bats would actually take pressure off him.

Of course it's a moot point since Collins will find a has-been / never was to take away at bats from him...

I haven't read all the comments yet so maybe some others agree, but I cannot understand why there isn't more widespread supper got Flores getting a shot at first base. It was always said he didn't have a position on the mets because the corners were set with wright and Davis. Well that's not the case anymore. If he can play third he should be able to learn first base.

If we end up keeping Davis, I am ok giving him one more shot. His potential power if he can regain some old form is worth it for me. But the next options? Duda ? Satin? Moving Murphy off second base? Why? Flores should be given a shot over any of those other options. And if we go with Ike, Flores should be in AAA learning first base as an insurance policy.

Regardless of a trade Murphy, Davis or Duda, I would start Flores in AAA at 1b.

The support for Ike Davis on this board is mind boggling, but the disdain for Duda is just flat out ignorant.  Flores has only played a handful of games at 1B.  He is not ready to handle the position defensively.  Hell just put at C, or SS if you don't care about defense.

I want every mets fan to baseball reference the 2005 NY Mets.  There is no reason that the 2014 Mets can't match or even be better then that squad.  Certain things have to go right and certain players have to stay healthy and perform but it is entirely possible.

Waive IKE TO SAVE 3.5 MIL like Pirates did with Garret. Use money towards Drew {give him 3rd year} and play Wilmer Flores everyday at 1st base, the guy can rake. Send Duda to AAA to save another 1.5mil.. Welcome to the playoffs, with a a bat at every position.

cmetsfan

Murphy or Flores should be able to play 3rd. Wright can play first.  Or Wright can stay put, but Ike Davis has proven tough to wait on or move, and any outside MLB team apparently wants Davis for free, or for the mets to remain blocked up at first, waiting for Davis to show what he is again.

Davis should do better this year, just because the lineup should be better. Flores defense will probably be suspect, as well as his durability, but he'll be cheaper and easier to swap out if he stinks. Ike is popular in the club house and probably saves many errant throws due to his height,  however you're gonna have to trade Flores anyway if Davis works out, but it's doubtful he's gonna bring much in return because bunting went out of vogue, 1st basement don't have to be as athletic as they were in 80's so people have Davis/Flores already.

I don't know if Davis or Flores can carry a team like Strawberry did in 80's. I know when Flores was healthy, it got pretty interesting offensively, even in a weak lineup, for a while.

I have matched him play three games last year at AA and left seeing a patient, fluent hitter.  He has 20+HR power and 280-300 hitting ability.  He had 6 hits in those three games and all were line drive to either corner outfield.  Three doubles and three singles and 2 RBI's.  I like him and he is 20.  I think he deserves an opportunity at first or second.

I am dumbfounded as to why we are not hearing noise about him being the everyday First Baseman on this team. His upside is a million times better than what we could expect out of a Duda/Davis & Satin platoon. Lucas Duda is garbage & he should not be handed another starting job. The Mets are 1 bat short of making noise in 2014 & if Flores produces like he has throughout his minor league career up to this point - with the exception of a down 2012 - he could very well be that bat this team needs. He may not be, but it's an unknown whereas we all should know by now that Duda is NOT the bat we need.

What position was Wilmer playing?

Right now I really want Ike to remain, so I hope Wilmer was not playing 1B.

This line up does not excite me.

1. CYoung CF

2. Murphy 2B

3. Wright 3B

4. Granderson RF

5. Ike 1B

6. D'arnaud C

7. Eric Young LF

8  Tejada SS

Ha ha ha. Clowns. Always over-emphasizing Winter Ball/Spring Training statistics. Nothing I saw of Flores last year led me to believe he is anything more than a marginal MLB player. Unless he can consistently find 30 HRs in his bat playing 1B or as a DH, I really don't envision much of a future for him. That said, the Mets aren't going anywhere in 2014, so if he gets 500 ABs playing 2B or 1B, I'm all for finding out one way or the other.

Just put him at second and leave it he can't be worse then duda in the outfield if I can have a possible .330 20+ 2nd baseman I'll take it

Kysheem Burns

The mets suck when are ever gonna get that guy who can hit 50 or .350 with 40+ homeruns every other teams had guy that can do that wright was pretty close but still we have to stop taking cecchni isinglass with the 13 pick we need mike trouts

His defense is a moot point if he keeps hitting like that, once March rolls around. You put him in the line-up, period. Terry figures the rest out on the fly. You move the Ike/Murph/Duda/EYjr pieces around in support of that bat. Bats like that have been hard to come by for this franchise. So, you start there. Of course, if he struggles in ST, we go back to our regularly scheduled program...

Nelson Cruz >>>>>>>>>>> Chris Young

Sometimes we have to scratch our heads with some of these signings! I would even be happy if we had Lagares playing everyday at CF over Chris Young

Time to buy the kid a first baseman's mitt.  If they were going to trade him as a high-ceiling 3B prospect, they would have done it already.  At this point, he's our player, and he's going to make it for us or fall on his face for us.

Let him play 1B all through ST and for the first few months at AAA.  Let him hit his way back on the big club, because lord knows I'm not confident that Davis, Duda, or Duda+Satin will get it done.

Incidentally, at of those combos, Davis is the best play IMO.

Dante Puzzuoli
Dante Puzzuoli

I know Wilmer is a career 2b 3b ... But I think we should strongly consider having him at 1B this spring and use Duda as a back up. Start Ike off in AAA to get mentally strong and ease his mind a little. Wilmer is iur strongest option and does not have the range nor versatility to be a SS 2B or 3B. He can hit 18-21 hr with 78 RBI in 2014 if used the right way I feel.

Let Flores earn a spot.   Guys get injured all the time.  We need depth.  I am rooting for this guy.

The next irrelevant question is a blow-by-blow of what he has eaten in his last 10 days. What are his three favorite TV shows in Venezuela? And how about a blog post on how you calculate batting average?

Flores 22 must play !st everyday. Forget about all the other crap we have been playing there. This guy will be an offensive force if put in one position and left there.

More important for Flores - 9 BB in 82 PA's for an 11 BB%. If he keeps doing that, he'll play.

Easy to bash a guy like FLores after his ankle injury, I have a strong feeling this guy will produce big time for us this season if healthy

md92468
md92468

In theory, if Flores can basically match his production in the minors (an admittedly big if), he represents exactly what this lineup needs - a gap-hitting RH bat to complement Wright who puts the bat on the ball and doesn't strike out much.

As it's currently constituted, good pitching will carve up the Mets lineup - it's possible the entire starting 8 (except possibly Murphy) will K more than 100 times, with the worst offenders in the middle of the lineup (Granderson - Young - Ike could be historically bad, if it comes to that, and Wright's good for 135-140 himself). Somewhere in that lineup has to be a guy besides Murphy who you can count on to make contact, because they're not going to be able to win all their games with the 3-run HR in that park...

I'd give him a go at 1B, but not in a platoon....give him his reps and see what he has. It won't happen, sadly, because Collins isn't a good manager. But Flores has produced runs wherever he's gone, and at 22 I don't see why it's not worth it to give him a shot at this level.

@cmetsfan Davis carry a team to last place through June with a .150 avg, if that's what you mean.

dexx

@Serge Marinkovic He is a good hitter, but he is certainly not patient.  He tends to swing early in the count, and is tough to strike out.  He is the RH version of Daniel Murphy.  I think he will grow into a more patient and more powerful hitter, but that's not what he is right now.

@Jean_Valjean This is a purely qualitative assessment on my part, but I'd be reluctant to write Wilmer off just yet. Yes, he got off to an inauspicious start, but I believe it's actually better than getting off to a fast start. It means he has to make the adjustments in order to improve. By contrast, get off to a fast start and everyone else starts making adjustments. Once you're figured out, it leaves you with very little wiggle room. Obviously it's all speculation, but his MiL numbers at the very least warrant him more of an opportunity...

William Bonilla
William Bonilla

@Jean_Valjean I don't see him hitting 30 Hrs but I think 20ish is a realistic expectation and he could hopefully hit .280+....while not ideal i would take that from the 1b slot for now....he doesn't need to be a star but Id be happy with those numbers

metman9

@jasonbay I find it funny that everyone keeps talking about him hitting his way back to the big club, and playing AAA ball to work on his first base defense.  First off playing first base for a guy who has played all over the infield is not like converting a catcher or outfielder.  Wilmer will just need to work on his footwork around the bag, he has good hands and is physically the part at first,  Mets should havve converted him awhile ago.  That being said he should be playing first base in ST and getting all the work he needs to make the transition.  He does not need three months to learn to play first base.  Nor should he have to prove anything more at AAA while the Mets run out Duda and Davis... Davis doesn't belong on this team, his defense has regressed and he is lost at the plate.  Buy him out if you cannot trade him and let Flores and Duda battle it out at first.  Flores has a HUGE ceilling and anyone who saw him at the plate last year should know this.  Kid has great plate coverage and has raw gap to gap power.  His power numbers will increase as he adjusts.

Earn a spot? Like Lucas Duda "earned" his spots? Duda has done nothing & was an okay hitter in the minors, yet he was handed the starting RF job going into 2012, given the starting LF job going into 2013, and now he has been pretty much handed the starting 1B job for 2014. All he has done to "earn" those spots was get demoted to the minors in 2012 & 2013. Flores was hampered with an ankle injury last year, but before his injury he was showing signs of being a very productive hitter at this level. He has earned the chance to challenge for an everyday spot & he should push Duda out at 1B & be the everyday 1B in 2014.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

Agreed. He has to play every day. If he needs work at 1B, then he should start the season in Vegas. Duda and Davis (if neither is traded) can battle it out in ST to see who will platoon with Satin.

Jimmy Gayron
Jimmy Gayron

You are dead on. Mets need some contact hitters. Get rid of Davis and Duda, have Satin back up or platoon with Flores. As for SS, We need Brad Miller. Compared to Tejada's numbers from 2012 (which were good), Miller's slash lines project to be better. Plus, he has more power, stolen bases, walks, runs, and RBIs, per AB. Not to mention a little thing called hustle.

Gland1

@Kysheem Burns That makes no sense.  You are blatantly wrong.  You say that every other team had someone who hit .350 with 40 HRs and your examples include two people who have never hit .350 or 40 HRs (Kemp/Trout) and someone who is retired.  Obviously you don't know what you are talking about.

Did you know that in all of MLB only two people hit more than 40 HRs and nobody hit more than .350?
