Lucas Duda 5 Baron)

Why Duda over Davis?

Terry Collins said Friday that Lucas Duda will play the majority of games against right-handed starting pitching, at least during the next week or so.

“We need to find out what Lucas can do first,” Collins explained. “I want to see if he can handle it.”

However, according to Cody Derespina, Duda has is hitting .375 and a 1.130 OPS against the next five right-handed starting pitchers the team is set to face, while Ike Davis is just 3 for 24 against the same pitchers >> Read more in the Wall Street Journal.

Neither Davis or Duda are consistent enough, offensively they are not boomers by any stretch. Trade them both for R.A. Dickey & use Josh Satin at First Base.

Duda Sucks. Ike is so much better defender than him. Duda is Dave Kingman. Homerun or K

I'm baffled by the decision to give Duda the job so early.  Everyone knows the Wilpons are broke, so why not cut Ike before the season starts if your going to give Duda the job after two games?  They could have saved nearly $3 million. Cheap and incompetent are a bad combination in ownership

But this is Terry Collins we're talking about.  Would anyone who has been paying attention be even remotely surprised if Ike Davis starts today

Do 4 games in... Tejada is still our SS. Davis demands a trade, and the Mets are in last place.

Tex on DL for the Yanks.  Trade him to Yanks.

many years ago, there was an outfielder named BOB CERV who played for the yankees. He was a powerful man who could hit homeruns a mile long. but being that the yankees had one of the best outfielders in the league, the yankees never gave him a chance. i really believed he had great potential. but.. he was demoted as a bench player and because of his lack of playing time  his average and strike outs were terrible. after a few years the yankees gave up on him and traded him to the lowly athletics. well, that year when given a chance to play every day had 30 homeruns with over 100 rb and hit over 300. i was just a kid then and all my baseball friends would tease me about   believing in him. i was 12  and i had the last laugh., I hope that big galout duda proves everyone wrong if given the chance to play every day. your welcome to look up the statistics on BOB CERV, another unsual name but the same kind of guy. thanks

someone simply needs to man up and OWN first base for the Mets. It was a nice start last night for Duda, but we need some consistency. As long as one of these guys performs and hits the ball out of the ballpark, there will be no need for this Ike vs. Duda argument anymore. Man up and win the job!

I'm not sure if Duda is a better fielder than Davis or not but I know Duda is hitting better. I like Duda being at first

Everyone crying because Strike Davis wasn't chosen, would be the same people calling for his head when he ended up sucking.

I think they made the right call with Duda, but the 5 day "sample" on their opponents is meaningless.

I would stick with Duda and ship Ike out to never never land. He will be a distraction now in the club house. A pouty face hurts everyone.

Something likely happened that they're not willing to share. I'm guessing Ike had a hissy fit about something.

I'm not a Duda fan but he got it going with the bat in last night's game. I agree with TC, Duda needs a straight series of games to evaluate his offense. Flipping 1B players nightly is not the right course of action on determining who best fills the job.

I think they may be relying on Duda's track record in the minors. his history shows that he takes a bit of time to develop into what they want out of him. at each level, he started out with a low average, low power, but always took a ton of walks. he eventually starts to hit when his plate patience results in getting better pitches to hit and translates it into production. if they give him enough at bats, I think they are hoping that his patience at the plate will get him pitches to drive; also, he swings at fewer pitches outside of the strike zone than Ike, so chances are that he will have better luck getting pitchers to throw him strikes. it always took Duda some time in the minors for this approach to payoff, but in both AA and AAA, when it did, he became capable of going on absolute tears that included power, OBP and higher average. that is probably why they think he is a better bet to figure out than Ike. if that is the case, then they should send Ike to AAA so that he would get enough at bats to build any sort of trade value, it will not increase at all if he sits on the bench the whole time. raking in Vegas is more meaningful than removing splinters from his ass

I don't understand how anybody can complain about choosing Duda or Ike to start when the alternative is Ike or Duda.

They should have given Duda a week, Ike a week, they both play in Anahiem, then make a decision. That back and forth game for game is just dumb and I can't believe a professional team would go that route.

Mejia is fun to watch!! I like the entire starting rotation, and it's only gonna get better. Winning does fix everything and last night has me looking forward to today's game. Hopefully the bullpen straightens out.

Duda has a smoother swing.  Ike is a mental case.  Duda is limited in talent and is not a long term solution.  He is likely a 20/75 guy at best, though the HR with people on was a refreshing change last night.

Ike should be gone.I wonder if the Yankees would take him as a backup/DH.  The short porch may maximize him.  Nunez would help the Mets and neither will help their current team.

We should also sign Kevin Gregg.

Aidan Maslow

While I like last nights results, Terry's reasoning makes no sense. The rational choice would be Ike at first because he can't play any other positions, while Duda can.

Grand slam or not, the key word is: consistent.

edk9

@hurricaneditka  Save $3m?  They signed him in mid Jan, you are suggesting that if they would have cut him in march they could save 75%.  That is saving to you?

That's like saying i just put down $10k to finance a bmw, but when it's time to pick it up I decide to give up my deposit and refuse the car.  Thus "saving " $30k.  My wife would be so proud of that move.

Anyway why sign him mid jan if that was going to happen?  They could have traded him prior to signing, and of course they could have not signed him at all if they didn't value him.

If they valued him at $3.5M in min jan, what has happened to drastically change value in such a short time period?  Nothing.  He's not jason bay or luis castillo yet.  He still has value to teams and will get many more chances in the majors until he finally sinks or swims.

I agree. I would have went with Ike. But if Duda keeps showing he belongs, so be it.

Bud Britton

if you can't tell that Ike isn't a better fielder open your eyes or get glasses. Duda's first move on every ball put in play is chug straight to first base. He has no game awareness, no athleticism; he is just big enough that if he hits the ball it might go out. He had his career day the game of the announcement, the day before he made a huge mental mistake that caused the go ahead run to score on Zach. WE NEED TO LOOSE THIS GUY...

Lately, Tejada kind of stinks at D also. Nunez is a better offense of player.

@Zac Tindall  Satin can play other IF positions and provides depth.  He's a bench player and pinch hitter for this squad so I am ok with him on this team.  He took Turners role over but let's hope not the pie in the face aspect.

@Zac Tindall Why do you say Duda was forced into playing the OF

joe21

@tierlifer @Zac Tindall even though he has not gotten it done in MLB yet with limited opportunities, Zach Lutz is probably a better solutions than Satin. plays similar IF roles, pounds left handed pitching and has way more power than Satin

Wilmer is not and should not be a UT player. He should be in Vegas playing SS everyday to see if he can play there everyday. If he is adequate there defensively he should replace Tejada and make Rueben the backup middle IF.
