Why didn’t the Mets acquire Yoenis Cespedes?
The Red Sox have traded Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes and cash to the Athletics for OF Yoenis Cespedes and a competitive balance pick, according to multiple reports (MLB Trade Rumors, July 31).
Matthew Cerrone: Billy Beane wanted a front-line starting pitcher, with playoff experience, and with a low-commitment contract, according to reports out of Oakland. Lester is all these things. If Beane wanted Bartolo Colon, he would have re-signed him six months ago. Plus, Colon has $11 million due to him next season. Jon Niese has zero playoff experience, there are concerns in baseball about his shoulder, and he’s under contract through at least 2016. Also, who is the outfielder the Mets give in trade to make up for Gomes? Eric Young Jr.?
The point is, yes, I’d love to have Cespedes on the Mets, but this is a perfect deal for Oakland and Boston. Their fans are equally happy, it seems. So, good for them…
