According to MLB Trade Rumors, Nick Evans, Chin-lung Hu, Manny Acosta, Luis Hernandez, Pat Misch and Taylor Buchholz are all out of options, meaning they must first clear waivers before being sent to the minors.
I keep hearing Buccholz is very likely to make the team, while Misch and Acosta fight with Jason Isringhausen for one (or maybe two) spots in the bullpen.
Also, it is sounding like Hu will end up with a spot on the bench. Meanwhile, while Brad Emaus competes with Daniel Murphy, Luis Castillo and Justin Turner to be the team’s second baseman, Terry Collins recently indicated to reporters that Hernandez might now also be in the mix to win the job.
All the while, it seems Evans is ticketed for a new team in April, unless of course Carlos Beltran starts the season on the disabled list, meaning a bench spot will open while one or both of Willie Harris and Scott Hairston split time in the starting lineup.
In either case, here is where this front office can prove something to me, in that the last administration was notorious for goofing up situations like this, often losing two or three players for the sake of one transaction. Hopefully, this group is more frugal.
