Who is Mets 2B prospect Dilson Herrera?

The Mets acquired 20-year-old 2B Dilson Herrera with pitcher Vic Black from the Pirates last summer, in a deal that sent John Buck and Marlon Byrd to Pittsburgh.

“He just goes for it. He’s strong mentally. He’s a very mature kid and he’s a gamer,” Single-A hitting coach Joel Fuentes told SNY’s Toby Hyde. “When you have a kid who plays hard, and knows his game so well, he’s not going to have a problem. He’s a package.”

Herrera was recently promoted to Double-A Binghamton, where he already has eight hits in 26 at bats >> Read more about Herrera at SNY’s Mets Minors.

Herrera is why we can trade Murphy and a pitcher for a big middle of the line up bat, every 1st and 2nd place team has some big middle of the order bats. Murphy fits other teams better then the Mets and is not worth big $, Murphy's value is as high as it can get, make some trades now, frees up some $ for bigger and better things. Cruz, Abreu and Encarcion are all guys that could have been had during the offseason

I think we could see Herrera this fall if he continues to hit well at AA and they trade Murphy.

Could have and should both kids and Byrd back. Sandy, that was another FA blunder. CY?

The Mets could have had both Herrera and Black PLUS Byrd if SA had opted to resign Byrd for a yearly figure comparable to CY and a lot less than CG.  Byrd plus Hawkins might have easily propelled this team near the top of a weakened division.  How many games were pis---- away with Farnsworth/Valverde serving as closer!

So David Wright is out of the lineup...lineup is going to look just awful

reynolds maybe a utility infielder to scouts. But his bat tells you he can play everyday. Batted 350 as a everyday ssin binghamton and now batting 400 in 8 games for vegas.

Adam Rubin reports David Wright is headed back to NY to have MRI on sore left shoulder. That's usually not a good thing especially with the Mets. Perhaps Flores could be on his way right back here.

Herrera 2b all the way.  Mets tried playing him at St Lucie at short.  Herrera did not like it.  Mets try hard to play people at their non natural position.  Let the kid develop at 2b.

we also have matt reynolds at shortstop. not too bad for sandy and the FO.

Reynolds drafted out of arkansas in 2012 by sandy

And herrera and black was a trade flip for byrd and buck.

Sandy has made some nice moves to improve this organazations minor league talent from the bottom up.

Hope he makes it to the big leagues!

Black's looking good and now this kid. Maybe this Mets team has a bright future. Next season perhaps?

What? An honest-to god second baseman? What will they think of next?

Too many met fans think that having Byrd on the team will be the magic pill. Getting Black and Herrera is a good move for the future. Most fans want it both ways all the time.

That trade was a steal. This kid shows a lot of promise.

@metfaninva  There's nothing wrong with challenging a player, some can handle it, some can't. However in the end, a smart coach will put his players in a position to succeed after identifying what his players do well.

@moeb Hopefully Reynolds works out but most scouts have already said Reynolds is nothing more than a utility player..even when he was drafted..hope they are wrong.

@stage52 I think everyone agrees that the Mets got the best of that trade, I believe the gripe is about having had the chance to sign Byrd as a FA for the same $ they gave Young and having Marlon in the lineup would be big upgrade over Young

@stage52 2 years 16 million and they could have had it both ways, to be fair.

@stage52 Agreed...they need a lot more than Byrd. Verdict is still out on that trade but either way...its not like Byrd/Buck were the future...

@drmetfan Yeah we are winning we have control and sooooo many prospects and when they get called up the will try and walk. remember if you dont swing you cant ground out.

@manicmesia @stage52 That's a good point, and I'd rather have him than CY. He'd actually have provided the perfect bridge to Nimmo with that contract he signed with the Phils.

You are the typical clueless mets fan that just whines. I 100% assure you the Mets STOLE from the Pirates in this trade.

@Eric Hack @drmetfan We would have never re signed Byrd for 10m a year. You are basically saying we shouldn't have traded for a 2nd basemen with plus offense and a back end of the bullpen pitcher so that we could have had 3 more months of Marlon Byrd in a lost season. Great logic.

Eddie_Dean
Eddie_Dean

@Eric Hack @drmetfan You'd rather they still had Marlon Byrd? Right now it's looking like Black on his own would've been enough to make that trade worth it. But this kid turns into a solid second baseman and leadoff hitter? For a 1.5 month rental of Byrd? That's a steal.
