MLB First Year Player Draft

Who are the Mets eyeing for next month’s MLB draft?

The Mets have the No. 10 overall pick in next month’s 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft.

According to the experts, the top of the draft is well defined, meaning the Mets may not get the chance to select a first tier college or high school player.

The players likely available to the Mets is extremely fluid, with four different publications tying the Mets to three different players >> Read more at Mets Minor League Blog.

I'm hoping the Mets pick Trea Turner...but I'm a little biased for a fellow Wolfpacker!   He could step in tomorrow and be better than anyone hitting at SS...steals bases, has some pop, good athlete..

The Mets don't develop offensive players well. Draft a pitcher, Hoffman, Newcomb, or Beede. One of those should be available. Follow the Tampa Bay model. Make trades like the Will Meyers trade once the pitching start to flow. Spend more than Tampa Bay and spend smart to hold on to stars and add key free agents. The Mets develop pitching well, stick with what your good at.

Lol I get it we are mostlyNew Yorkers. Most of us dont have patience. I sure dont. I have never seen the my Knicks or Islanders win and the last time my Niners won I was a early teen. But the lets get a new manger and a new GM is gonna be said every year. Alderson hasdone a pretty dam good job. I dont like how he wont overpay and how he gave chris young all that money when we had 3 OFs but look what he has done right

Tell me all about it 8 years from now when it can be determined if the draft picks were a success or not.

Probably a 14 year old that should be here by the time were ready to compete in 2025...

Hitter that likes to take pitch's and not afraid to strike out.

I'd go with one of the college outfielders, Conforto (sp.) or Bradley Zimmer. Guys that will rise quickly. Mets had two shots at Joey Gallo in 2012, perhaps the player with the most power potential in the minors (led minors in homers last year, doing it again this year) and took Cecchini and Plawecki instead. Think Plawecki looks good, but Gallo looks like an absolute beast. Anyway, would be nice to take a polished hitter who can make more of an immediate impact.

If the Mets are targeting one guy this far in advance, that would be a problem.  There's a ton of turnover in the last month in that top 20 players or so.

Mets will take some 14 year old as usual because they're still on that "20 year rebuilding plan."

Trea Turner may not have the polish Sandy loves to a detriment but he has tools. i'd take Turner if Mayo list it correct. having said that Sandy will probably take the more polished Conforto or Zimmer. because they have higher floors and lower ceilings then Turner. but atleast i'm happy it sounds like Sandy is going after a college bat that will be ready in 2-3 year and not some prep pick that could take 5.

Zimmer supposedly a better defender.

Ladies and gents, your 2017 Mets... Nimmo (lf), Hererra (2b), Flores (3b), Zimmer (rf), Smirth (1b), Lagares (cf), d'Arnaud (c), Cecchini (ss) .... Just kidding.

So Brandon Nimmo and Dominic Smith are bums now? With the three recent picks out of high school, I do agree that this year's pick should be the best available college bat.

Hopefully the best player available..depends on whos still there at #10.

by the way, Jeff McNeil has a .921 OPS in Savannah so far this year - a very hard place to hit well.  Needs to start hitting against lefties, but is pounding righties.  12th round pick from 2013.

I want a college OF with power who can start in 2016. No more HS phenoms who will be ready in 2020. Conforto or Zimmer.

stop making sense.  the rest of the forum reeks of frustration and lack of rational thinking.  conforto or turner would be the right pick for me.

@jenkins Zimmer has a lot of speed but at 6'5 he should develop some power... Conforto is supposedly a  good hitter with avg power.

@Albert E Lewis @Richard Jones

I know about the TJ Surgery. That is the only reason he is likely to be on the board at for the Mets. They likely would be able to sign him under slot. That would give them more to spend in later rounds. Possibly get a true 2nd round pick with there third round pick. Player will be passed because teams will not be able to afford them with the money they have for a given slot.
Hoffman is a bit of a risk but he has a Harvey like ceiling.
The other down side is it will take him an extra 12-18 months to develop.

Yes there is a risk, yes there is a down side (time) but there is the possibility of a high payoff.

I would like to see the Mets draft a pitcher. I think they do a better job developing pitchers. If they do draft a position player I would want Gatewood. He isn't performing as well as expected so he has dropped. I think you need to look at talent and not just what someone has done over the last 3 months. Gatewood has the most upside in the draft.

@dave42 @jenkins Confortos a bat but Ive heard hes just ok in the OF defensively.

Nell Dar
Nell Dar

He is the safer pick. Works the zone well, could hit for power and average. I'd be inclined to take him over Zimmer. However I want Jackson

Richard Jones
Richard Jones

@jenkins @dave42Draft Hoffman and trade Gee for Profar at the deadline. The Rangers are really hurting for pitching. Syndergaard will be ready by then.

jenkins

@dave42 @chavez06 @jenkins  I like keeping a guy like Abreu as a PH. I think Matsuzaka is a pretty good long reliever.

But I generally like your rule of thumb.

jenkins

@Nell Dar  yeah-he's been in the organization for a year and a half. Currntly hitting .330 at AA.

Nell Dar

You are garnering this from plaweckis stats I'm assuming, yet plawecki has never put up anything close to the seasons d'Arnaud has.....

@jenkins @dave42  if the Mets wanted to show how serious they are they could overpay for Hardy

happy hank
happy hank

@jenkins @dave42  i think the Yankees will give J.J Hardy a ridiculous contract. the Dodgers will resign Hanly Ramirez and then thats it no other team needs a SS. so the Mets can get Jed Lowrie for cheap to bridge the gap to Cecchini. Stephen Drew and Asdrubal Cabrera will be bench guys next year and singed for bench guy money.

dave42

@chavez06 @dave42@jenkins no reason for Quintanilla to be in the organization at all.  I agree on Tovar, though they called him up for a cup of coffee from AA last year.

I like to ask the question - if Player X wasn't on our team, would he be on anyone else's?  If the answer is no, maybe we should cut him.  That would mean no on Q, Valverde, maybe Matsuzaka, Abreu...  Clearly not the case with Farnsworth though!

chavez06
chavez06

@dave42 @jenkins  I'm surprised Tovar was not promoted to LV when Flores came to NYC. If I'm Met's management, I'm viewing 2014 is the year where a lot of questions about the 'kids' would have to get answered.  So, need to play Florest at SS everyday for an extended period.  We know what Tejada can do.  And while Flores is in NYC, it Tovar should be playing SS everyday in LV.  No reason for Omar Q to get anything more than an occasional start.

Matt Marcellus
Matt Marcellus

Rosario is probably slightly more touted, even with cechinni's solid season thus far. Two choices is always better than one though.

dave42
dave42

@jenkins @dave42 my sense is they want to give Flores a chance at SS and if he washes out, I expect Tovar will get a shot.  If he can't cut it, I expect either Drew or a trade for someone else's prospect like Gregorius.

jenkins
jenkins

@dave42 @jenkins  I'm all over Plawecki-not impressed with Darno offensively or defensively. at least Pawlecki can hit. I think Tovar deserves a chance, but we need a vet to contend before 2017, IMO.

dave42
dave42

@jenkins @dave42 everybody knows it except Collins ;)

I think d'Arnaud will be their catcher of the future too, but it doesn't mean I'm ready to trade Plawecki.  Give me another legit SS option.  Tovar is hitting this year.  Glove is supposed to be solid.  Maybe he's passable.

jenkins
jenkins

@dave42 @jenkins  need a vet for the next 2-3 years. It won't be Tejada and the Mets know it.
