Where things stand with Bartolo Colon

Mets officials do not expect to trade Bartolo Colon before today’s 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline (NY Post, July 30). Instead, expect them to stand pat and try to move him through waivers in August (NY Post, July 31).

Reports have said interested teams want the Mets to pay part of the $11 million due to Colon in 2015, but the Mets prefer to shed the entire contract. In August, if he is claimed off waivers, the Mets could work out a deal or simply let him go for nothing and be free of his money this winter.

However, as recently as Monday, there was absolutely nothing going on with a deal for Colon (Martino, July 28). Nevertheless, they remain open to moving him (Knobler, July 22), so Colon’s name continues to be in the rumor mill (MLB Trade Rumors, July 28).

For instance, the Orioles (CBS Sports, July 31) and Royals (Daily News, July 30) recently expressed interest, and the Blue Jays, Mariners and Dodgers had been linked to him earlier this month.

Genius move paying him 9mm this year and 11mm next year when he's 42 and fatter. Who is going to "eat" that contract!

Well I guess its gonna be another quiet trade deadline, to bad because I think we are pretty close, a power hitter away. Common Sandy pull the trigger.

I bet Sandy does nothing that makes this team a contender come this off season.

It's hilarious to me that fans actually asked Matt why the Mets didn't get Cespedes for Colon +.

I feel like the A's didn't really get as much as they could have for Milone.

Before I went into the shower I was thinking .."Hmmmm, Billy Beane isn't done trading yet. He's going to get a bat" I get out of the shower and Ken Rosenthal says that Beane has made another trade. Oakland is going for it big time this year

I don't know if it's the HR derby or what, but you guys are completely overrating Cespedes.  He has a .303 obp this year after being even worse last year.  That's a marginal starting player, not an all-star.

Mets need to trade a pitcher today! They need to make room for Harvey and Thor. Trade Gee/Colon at their peak values.

I kinda like the Mets and Royals matching up on a deal. The Royals can send the Mets someone like Tim Collins (who I believe is in the minors) who has been a successful reliever and is a power lefty (he was also drafted/discovered by JP Ricciardi) and who can be a second power lefty to team with Edgin (sorry not buying Eveland, though glad he has been decent in low leverage situations) PLUS the Royals could throw in a low level, high end prospect. I don't think that is bad at all for both teams. Collins is young and could just need a change of scenery.

Could have Neise,Murphy and Plewcki got in done for the Mets for Cepedes?

1. Why didn't Oakland just trade a prospect for Colon who they know can pitch there, seeing as they already have Gray, Chavez, Kazmir, and Samarzdja!!!

2. This proves why moneyball will NEVER WIN ANYTHING!!! They just traded away their shot at the World Series. I am in disbelief. They are that money focused they traded their best hitter for a pitcher they don't need and will be a fa next year.

3. We better trade a pitcher today because we are adding 2 of them next season in Harvey and Thor

A's told sandy cespedes for colon straight up and sandy replied are you crazy we have nowhere to put him we have chris young give us prospects

Mets PR stinks...at least what I'd like to hear from Sandy is "We're listening and are always willing to make a deal to improve the team"....instead we hear "We doubt we're going to do anything"....at the end of the day it's all spin but as a fan it would be nice to believe that their is a desire to get things done, not the attitude that "we're a mediocre" team and we're happy with that...that's one of the reasons I've been down on the Mets, not as a team, but their management. Mediocrity seems to be all they desire..

Guys, Let's be realistic here. What possibly could the Mets have offered to the A's that was on the same level as Lester....guy is an Ace pitcher and the A's now have the best playoff rotation out there.

grillruben
grillruben

@#FreeWilmer

To me from Oaklands perspective I would much rather hold onto Cespedes and trade a prospect for Colon who proved he can pitch in Oakland. It's about value.

Angels can easily win that division. So basically you get half a season of Lester then you gotta face a Tor/Bal lineup in a one game playoff, and then beat detroit in a series. You're never doing that with their lineup.

@nym68  As they should. They have as good as shot to get to the WS this year as they ever have.  They should be going all in.

@grillruben Why do the METS NEED to trade a pitcher today? To entertain rabid fans?

Chris
Chris

@Keith Allen-Verdi It's a good deal. But If you are the A's Keith, Who would you rather have: Lester or Niese? A's wanted the best possible pitcher now for Cespedes. And Lester was that guy.

jamets
jamets

@grillruben  Because the A's didn't have a guy to start game 1 of a playoff series and match up against a #1 starter.  Now they do.

nym68

@grillruben what the hell???????? They just traded for the second guy that they needed to get thru to the World Series. You my friend, are lost

Comparing Lester to Colon is like comparing a Peter Lugar's steak to Spam.

@drella Actually Billy Beane offered to take CY's contract when Sandy replied "Oh hell no....he's in Sharknado 2. He's a movie star! The Mets are built on star power and nothing says starpower like Sharknado 2""

Not saying it's as good but if a wk ago Sandy went to As n offered Gee Niese and Montero would oak have considered that idk not sure if they have had dialogue w Bos regarding Lester the whole time who knows

Colon, Murphy and Thor.

Oak needs a second baseman

@Chris maybe something like Colon, EY Jr, and Nimmo/Plawecki...is that really THAT MUCH WORSE than Lester and Johnny Gomes.

They are going for it. You are thinking like a Mets fan.

@grillruben @#FreeWilmer  If you're talking about building a team, you're right - it's about value.  When you are talking about trying to win the WS this year, its not about value - its about putting the best team possible on the field.  And the A's are better with Lester than they would have been with Colon.

tullydew
tullydew

Lester is a #1 bulldog. Colon is a #4.

nym68
nym68

@jamets @nym68 I agree and I truly think that A's ownership is behind all of these moves this season. They know that if they can win a World Series then they have the city of Oakland right where they want them in regards to a new stadium.

grillruben
grillruben

@rico

Harvey, Wheeler,Degrom,Neise,Thor/Colon/Gee. A rotation consists of 5 men. Right now you have desperate teams trying to make the playoffs and win today with about 5 hours left to add a pitcher, which many teams don't have. In the winter teams can sign pitchers (like Lester), without losing anyone.

Jon Pace
Jon Pace

@Joseph Baffi @Jon Pace Not getting that impact player today barely any bats available (at least that are being rumored about). Offseason yes.

I do think there is nothing wrong with continuing to strengthen an area that for the first time in years looks strong (relief) especially if you can get 1-2 controllable power arms with MLB experience like the Royals have.

grillruben
grillruben

@Chris @Keith Allen-Verdi

Why did they need to move Cespedes?!! I don't get that part!! That's why this trade baffles me. Hes the fan favorite and they don't win without him.

Lester is awesome, but he's gone next year and you now have a very weak lineup.

grillruben
grillruben

@jamets

They have four guys with ERAs under 3.5!! They can't affrord to trade their best hitter in a soft lineup!

grillruben
grillruben

@tullydew

I;m by no means comparing them. My point is they have 4 guys pitching like studs, Lesters value at the cost of Cespedes is horrible.

Colon had a sub 3 era there last year so I use him to illustrate they could have added a fifth guy and got production without trading much

Steve Iannella
Steve Iannella

@tullydew forget Syndergaard. I thnk Colon and Murphy is a better deal than Lester and Gomes. And a deal I would have made for Cespedes.

grillruben
grillruben

@tullydew

Oakland was only trading him for someone that could help today. Murphy and Gee maybe.

Vee!
Vee!

@Steve Iannella @Chris Are you serious? Lester blows Niese out the water, sorry he jut does. And the A's love prospects but they want to win it all now and when you think of who the mets have in the lineup, no one is better equipped to help win it all than Lester.

The only guy with any real playoff experience is Colon and he doesn't match up to Lester. The A's could have given up less for a Colon but then they'd have the contract to contend with and they weren't gonna do that. ESPECIALLY considering they could have resigned Colon in the offseason last year.

nym68
nym68

@Steve Iannella @Chris YES.... Oakland didn't want prospects in this trade. They wanted one of the two best pitchers on the market and that's what they got back in Lester....and why the hell would they want EY? He can't even play on the Mets

Chris
Chris

@Steve Iannella Yes it is. From a pitching standpoint, nothing the Mets have is "win now" ready like Lester is.

grillruben
grillruben

@nym68 @jamets

They need bats. Detroit can throw great pitching at them in the playoffs and also carry big sticks.

grillruben
grillruben

@Joseph Baffi @grillruben

The Red Sox won 69 games, were a complete joke, then won the world series the next year. I'd take that over two consecutive playoff bounces.

This is the loser mindset this ownership has created. We play in NY in a brand new stadium!! We won and made the playoffs when we spent money.

Oakland is not even a lock to win that division. Angels can get a blast from Trout, Hamilton, or Puljos off any pitcher and how are you gonna come back?

rico
rico

@grillruben the old adage, you never can have enough starting pitching?

yeah today would seem to be a good day when some teams may feel the urgency to make a move but a lot of teams will feel this urgency in 3 weeks also.  Not as easy to do but can be done.

Chris
Chris

@grillruben @Keith Allen-Verdi Completely agree man. A's looked at their team and felt they had a really good chance to win it all this year. Thats pretty much what they will be banking on. We are talking about Billy Beane here...he's a cowboy lol

jamets
jamets

@grillruben @jamets  Come on, are you really going to rely on Kazmir and Chavez in the playoffs?  I like Gray and Smardzija, but Lester makes them a much scarier team in the postseason.

jamets
jamets

@grillruben @jamets Cespedes isn't close to their best hitter.  He's probably not top 5.  (Moss, Donaldson, Crisp, Norris, Jaso have all been better this year).

Jaymes Provine
Jaymes Provine

Colon n Murph is bttr than Lester?!? Don't think so Gee Niese Montero for Cespedes n some other prospect Idk makes lil more sense

Chris
Chris

@Steve Iannella @tullydew Colon is nowhere near what Lester is. And forget about Gomes, he was basically just an extra position player in the deal.

Jon Pace
Jon Pace

@Joseph Baffi @Jon Pace He had been rumored to be available in the past though no not recently. But who is a big bat out there that is the equivalent of a Ces that you honestly think could be moved that we haven't discussed? That guy is just potentially not out there. Offense is at such a premium that it is rare when they become available (hence all the talk of Tulo/Cargo in the offseason, potentially Kemp now).

Staying with KC maybe in the offseason if they miss the playoffs and presumably lose James Shields, they look at the 30 year old Alex Gordon who is due $11 million and see what they can get for him (would love to see him in LF and leading off for the Mets next year).

grillruben
grillruben

@Chris

See, me, I'm the guy that see's the movie, hears all the praise and says moneyball is garbage.Billy Beane has won as many World Series as my grandma (she won zero).

They had WS caliber pitching and just gave up the only legit threat in their lineup. They will lose playoff games 2-1, 1-0, etc.

Can't win a WS with no punch in your lineup.

grillruben
grillruben

@jamets @grillruben

You need to score to win. Good luck beating the Tigers rotation with that lineup.

grillruben
grillruben

@jamets

He has the most raw talent, and in the end of the day is the guy in that lineup you don't want to face. He's also been on a tear since the all-star break.

jamets
jamets

You also need to pitch to win.  The A's rotation didn't match up with the Tigers rotation before.  Now it does.

And the A's have been scoring runs all year without getting much from Cespedes.  Losing him won't make much difference for their offense.
