Mets officials do not expect to trade Bartolo Colon before today’s 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline (NY Post, July 30). Instead, expect them to stand pat and try to move him through waivers in August (NY Post, July 31).
Reports have said interested teams want the Mets to pay part of the $11 million due to Colon in 2015, but the Mets prefer to shed the entire contract. In August, if he is claimed off waivers, the Mets could work out a deal or simply let him go for nothing and be free of his money this winter.
However, as recently as Monday, there was absolutely nothing going on with a deal for Colon (Martino, July 28). Nevertheless, they remain open to moving him (Knobler, July 22), so Colon’s name continues to be in the rumor mill (MLB Trade Rumors, July 28).
