Where is Curtis Granderson?

Curtis Granderson is hitting .171 with a .246 slugging percentage since the All-Star break.

He’s on pace to finish the season batting below .220 with just under 20 home runs.

His projected 1.5 WAR will be the lowest of his career in a season playing at least 100 games.

“The guy has been invisible,” a Mets person recently told John Harper (Daily News, Aug. 28). “Remember, he was supposed to be our cleanup hitter.”

miniMCavatarMatthew Cerrone: Granderson hasn’t hit for a high average since his days in Detroit, so I had very low expectations that he’d return to, say, .280. But, .217 just isn’t good enough. In terms of his power, I wrote last January that I expected around 25 home runs. In fact, I kept saying that something on par with his first year in the Bronx, i.e., .260, 25 HR, 20 doubles and 3.5 WAR, would have been fine, especially in his first season at Citi Field.

He was hitting well this mid-June to mid-July, after being moved to the leadoff spot, and it looked like 25 would be possible. But, man, what happened? He’s been downright brutal the last two weeks, essentially crushing any hope of a good first year.

Lets not get carried away here just yet. The comparisons to Jason Bay are very premature. If you fail to remember, Beltran had his worst career year in 2005, his first year here. All he did the following year was set a ton of single season records, establishing himself as the best CF in Mets history. I expect Grandy to bounce back next year & justify his contract. .250/.325/25/90 is probably what he will do. Its not outstanding but that is what buys you Grandy's salary in baseball today.

For now..let's see how the rest of these guys turn out in the next few years..

Where is Curtis Granderson?

Better yet, where is Metsblog starting lineups for tonights game,or am I missing something??

Anyone?

Granderson hit under 235 the previous 2 seasons, his BA declined 3 straight years, that contract was a joke, good clubhouse guy ? 60 million to wave a towel ?

I guess everyone here screaming for outfield help this past offseason wishes we signed Choo instead?  Or maybe Beltran?

I know this will sound a little nuts on the surface, but we would get a leadoff hitter and an rbi got out of it as well as 2 guys with better obp's then Granderson. Would you guys do Granderson and Colon for Crawford and Ethier? Its kind of a problem for problem money wash kind of deal. Then maybe we go sign a Azsuel Cabrera to play SS....do i really think mets are getting Hanley Ramirez or any other elite hitter in free agency or trade.....no chance.....

Also curious if the Cubs said they would take Lageres and Montero for Castro on the Cubs would u do it?

U get to keep wheeler and syndergard out of the deal but have to sacrifice Lageres... u do it? Granderson could play Cf if u do......

Bench his sorry *ss. He's a waste of space. See if someone (anyone) can hit in AAA or AA.

I think it is always a risk singing smaller guys for power.  It's just not something they can't sustain.  See Granderson and Bay.  Now take a look a Poppi or Halladay.  The mets need a true cleanup hitter, we have needed one for almost a decade.

You can't say he was a horrible free agent signing and blame it on SA, because if we hadn't signed him, we'd have denDekker and Neuwenhuis out there. And lord help us the things you fair-whether Mets fans would be saying about how awful the outfield would have been if we didn't sign him and THAT was our outfield. I mean at least he can hit home runs. Not only is he better than what we have, he's an incredible clubhouse guy. Instead of finding all the negatives, start focusing on the positives, he's gonna be around longer then a lot of you wish so get over it and watch some baseball.

I hate how Mets people always find a way to bash their players anonymously in the press.  I think he'll be better next year.

The sad part to me is Alderson thought this guy was not risky, but felt Puig or Cespedes or Abreu was too risky.  Awful.

Max Denby

This was a really really bad singing. Why exactly did we get this guy if not for power?  If so, then why on earth is he hitting leadoff??

Curtis was a bone thrown to weary Met fans. By all accounts he is a very likable guy and a positive clubhouse presence. That being said I'd rather we have a borderline sociopath who could hit .280 and not fan 150 times a year. Curtis had had exactly ONE GOOD MONTH. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that he finishes the year under .200. Yet another in a LONG line of bad free agent signings.

Look only Terry thinks this guy is a lead off hitter. Give him a chance down in the lineup and see what happens. He plays good defense and has some pop, maybe not 16 million worth, but some pop. What choice do they have their not getting rid of him now.

I think u have to give granderson a full year to adjust .which I'm fine with but if he puts another stinker next year we all no what we have another Jason bay let's hope not . oh I'm sick of tc as the manager need a new face

Hopefully Sandy can swing a trade. Even if they have to pay half of his guaranteed contract.

I think that most folks on this blog were in agreement that the signings we made in the offseason would pretty much have us in the same position as last year. This has proven to be accurate. Sandy seems too enamored with trying to be slick and sign guys that are coming off of down years, hoping that they turn it around. This rarely happens in baseball, especially with guys past 30. Marlon Byrd was an exception, but he was coming off of a suspension year and hit very decently the previous 2 years. Young amd Grandy both were coming off consecutive bad years, which should have been an indication to stay away. With little available in free agency next year and our unwillingness to trade pitching strength, it is very likely that we will see similar results next year.

Granderson signing is a disaster. Mets bid against themselves and added that 4th yr. Sandy has been awful in his FA signings and wasted a large chunk of our budget in Granderson for the next few yrs.

Your moderator a few months ago asked me why I thought the signing of Curtis (I still am a big fan) had become a disappointment.. He chastised me for saying that .."Since when?" was his response.. That was about three weeks ago...I hoped his numbers would have improved but he is back in the same slump... I expected the same numbers you expected in your artic. I do like the guy. I hope for all sake that he says he's been heart, and didn't want to use that as an excuse...have not panned the past year in FA .

I also mentioned that he is not a lead off hitter for this team (despite the 4 homers)... and was chastised by fellow responders that he did it with Detroit ("Didn't do my homework") But that was a younger Curtis, on a much differently put together team... Now, he has OBS issues and more... He is not a slacker and is easy to root for...But his lack of consistently getting on base in the number one role has created a major problem for this team... He is definitely in the wrong spot... .Wouldn't be if others were more clutch at 3 and beyond... Is he the best we have at the one spot... I guess so but that's not saying much. Love to see how he compares to other one hole players.. In the end, This is still a bottom of barrel team in terms of hitting statistics...

I am so tired of the critics from fans on Wright... SNY showed a stat that he has the most hits in the NL since he came up (I believe). Who are they going to replace him with? Flores..joke...The man will go down with the top rank in every single hitting record in Mets history.. And, a class act to boot.. Same emotions for Murph...

The Mets knew what they were getting with Curtis, and I figured he would have two fairly good years left and they had to give him the other two years to get him.. There were no plans to spend hire on an OF last year. CY..was another story... big whiff but I do think it is comical that the Yanks signed.. Story of my life if he revitalizes himself with the Spanky's... Based on history its probably going to happen..Sigh..

The root cause of all of this is that both SA and TC are good at new player development. Their five year plan has not worked.. Time for a change... even for the sake of change... SA hasn't proven to leadership he should be trusted with more money...Doesn't deserve one more year... Madoff is not an issue any more. ...

When someone is awful for months to start then good for a month then awful again for months to end the season it's that month in the middle that's the aberration not the other way around. Grandy is a BUST!

The only thing worse than when the Mets don't spend money is when they actually do spend money. Because they invariably almost always spend on the wrong guy thus setting back even the hope of the team spending money on someone good for years as they wait for the last bum's contract to run out.

Mike

Sadly this is better than I thought he would do. The Mets spend so little and when they do they would be better off burning the money. Hey at least Colon has been pretty great so the off season wasn't a complete loss

You would have thought that through George Foster, Roberto Alomar, Bobby Bonilla, Vince Coleman etc…that the Mets would learn that you can't cheap out on Free Agents buy signing the older ones and hoping they regain their 10 year ago form. You either go into the market getting quality guys in their prime or stand pat. Paying big dollars for guys into their early 30's is a failed strategy.

Granderson has had his moments but his overall performance has been a huge disappointment. I said it the moment the Mets signed him, big mistake. Granderson's number were a result of him playing at Yankee stadium and he took advantage of the short right field wall. No other team was giving Granderson the kind of money the Mets gave him not to mention at 4 years. In the first year Alderson had the chance to spent money he did a poor job selecting the free agents he signed. Chris Young, 7M. Really???? Granderson, 4/60. Really????

Colon has been the only one that has been productive and even today we still question the 2 year deal. No other team was giving Colon such a deal. Alderson should have offered a 1 year guaranteed with a vesting option if needed. Had that been the case Colon would have been traded already. Let's hope he does a better job this off season if indeed the Mets are going to be players in the free agent market.

spider43
spider43

The elephant in the room is that Granderson was given the amount of money he was given because he was supposed to be a "power bat". He was supposed be be batting 4th or 5th in the Mets lineup. For him to be batting leadoff and hitting less than 20 HR for the season is simply a waste of resources. If a leadoff hitter was needed rather than a power bat, we could have possibly signed one (or traded for one) who would have cost less money and/or years of commitment to bring him aboard. Unless Granderson can rebound into being that player the Yankees once had for awhile, Granderson's stay here will barely be as helpful as Jason Bay's time here.

I don't know why Sandy failed to see what many fans saw in a washed-up Granderson. He was never worth a 4-year deal. I like really do like Curtis, but it was obvious that he was going to suck for us. Here are his BA/OBP/OPS numbers for the past 2 years:

2012 - .232/.319/.811

2013 - .229/.317/.723

The only reason his OPS was even remotely decent is because of Yankee Stadium. Anyone who expected Grandy to hit 30+ home runs at Citi Field is delusional. Yet he was supposed to be our clean up hitter?! I can honestly say there are a number of fans who are more knowledgeable than the idiots who run this organization if they expected a 33 year old player with declining batting numbers to suddenly revitalize his career playing in Citi Field.

@anthony G. Decesare

Carl Crawford:  .271/.310/.368 and owed over $20m/year for over 3 more years

Andre Ethier:  .247/.311/.370 and owed $18m, $18M, $17.5M, $17.5m over the next four years.

Sooo...no, we should not make that trade since both have worse contracts, both have a lower OBP, and both have no power at all.  Sandy should be fired if he makes that trade :).

@Max Denby Because he was getting on base a ton after his terrible start.

@Joseph Garofola Really, who in their right mind would want him? Then again, the Yankees just signed Chris Young (so much for the alleged 'genius' of Brian Cashman).

matmil

Maybe not, if they can't get a bat then they need to go in another direction. Concentrate on the pitching and defense. Their record would be a lot better this year had they had better D at short and some more speed. Get some people who can steal some bases and teach guys like Lagares to steal more tighten up the defense and they can be at least a .500 team. Especially with Harvey and Parnell coming back.

spider43
spider43

@Steven Molello ....  The only problem with your argument is that quality players in their prime rarely make it to Free Agency, and for the ones who do, they are represented by agents like Scott Boras, who teams hate to deal with. No team (except maybe the Rays or Marlins or Royals or A's) will ever let their prime players get to free agency, because they lock all of those players up to very long term contract extensions before they even reach their prime years.

7up17left

@Steven Molello George Foster and Bobby Bo actually did pretty good.  Their expectation were very high, and unfortunately they were not model citizens either.

@drmetfan People who think Sandy is a good GM boggle the mind.  After years of waiting his two big FA signings were both massive busts.  I honestly don't get people who support this guy.

Your talking about this year as far ss obp, I talking about their entire careers.

If they can get castro for Lageres and Montero, I think you have to bite the bullet and do it and out Granderson back in CF.

If we can get Crawford and Ethier for Colon, probably could get them without colon if u just take the money, but for payroll purposes u can get those 2 for Colon....have to consider it...

You give up no major prospects in either deal and your farm system is still very strong.

To start 2015 with a rotation of Harvey, Wheeler, Degroom, Neise and Gee, with Syndergard getting more seasoning in the minors, ur in good shape.

Your bullpen is solid and Parnell returns next year

Your offense is a nice mix of speed and pop with Crawford-LF, Castro-SS, Murphy-2b, Wright-3b, Duda-1b, D'Arnaud-C, Granderson-CF, Ethier-RF
