Eric Campbell pulls a ball

Where are Sandy Alderson’s diamonds in the rough?

Mets 1B Eric Campbell started Monday against Braves LHP Mike Minor, on Tuesday, 1B Lucas Duda started against RHP Julio Teheran.

In 41 at bats against left-handed pitching this season, Campbell, 27, is batting .341 with a .391 OBP, three doubles one home run and six RBI.

Meanwhile, against right-handed pitching, Duda is hitting .281 with a .377 OBP, 20 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 217 at bats.

It’s proving to be a nice balance, better than what I assume the organization expected of Duda or Ike Davis and Josh Satin, which was the projected platoon during Spring Training. Instead of an average first baseman, the Duda-Campbell combination appears capable of putting together a pretty good season.

This is what Billy Beane does so well in Oakland, finding guys like what the Mets hope to get from Campbell, then mixing and matching, plugging and playing, and eventually putting together an offense that is good enough to support his pitching, leaving everyone to wonder: “How’d he find that guy?”

The way I understand it, J.P. Ricciardi is tasked by Sandy Alderson with heading up the department that handles this sort of diamond-in-the-rough scouting, whether it comes from other team’s major or minor league rosters. In the time these guys have been at the helm, no longer working with Beane, Alderson and Ricciardi have given us all sorts of players, from Brad Eamus to Colin Cowgill to Chin-Lung Hu to Andrew Brown. However, so far, none have developed in to what Beane has found in Brandon Moss and Josh Donaldson, among others. Hopefully, Campbell and Duda is where it begins…

Satin or Campbell, no room for both (is there?) but, is there a market for either as part of a deal? And which one IS the "real deal". Recker is a decent #2 catcher and Centeno a catch and throw AAAA guy for injury protection but, by some next year we need to know: d'Arnaud or Palwecki or both? Starting pitching is surplus and I iagine two must go to get a real hiiter> Do we send Murphy away in trade cuz of "scared money" and does our AAA 2B herrera/Reynolds have it? what about SS? The bullpen has been more suspect than prospect, Familla and Mejia are not Taylor/Mcgraw...lots of holes...

If the Mets are going to be compared to the A's then there is work to be done.  The Mets don't bid on Cuban FA's nor do they trade prospects.  Trading a pitching prospect or current starter is the only way to make the Mets better.  Does Sandy think our future rotation will consist of Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Thor, Matz, Montero, deGrom and Gee?  That is too many pitchers, trade some for an impact bat already!!!!!

Don't expect much from our front office, they think the team is competitive with the players we now have. There will be no major upgrades forthcoming before the deadline.

Duda was in the organization when.Sandy arrived.

Thanks, Matt. I had all but purged Chin-Lung Hu from my consciousness. No such luck with Rick Ankiel and Frank Francisco. Can we agree that Campbell has enough of a track record to warrant an extended look?

That's why J.P. Ricciardi  salary is a waste of money. He's never seen a diamond in the rough just barbecue charcoal.

Well there is Byrd as an example of that, so I wouldn't say there are zero of these players, but I don't disagree with the theme of the article here.

Anybody have a decent scouting report on our AAA shortstop, Matt Reynolds?  Can he play the position?

Yay! Abreu is playing! He's just so good I don't know how terry doesn't play him everyday!

What's the deal with Steven Matz? I know he's not Syndergaard or Wheeler but would be still be considered a significant trade piece? His low era and bb/9 and high k/9 mirror those of a valuable piece

terry fing with the lineup that has been working.. he is hands down the worst manager the mets have ever had

An article on finding diamonds in the rough...and it doesn't even reference Marlon Byrd?  The year before we had him he had a .210 / .243 / .245 slash line!

Syndegaard, Gee & Plawecki +1 should get the job done for Tulo

Remember when we all thought Sandy was the savior?  Oh how the mighty have fallen.  This guy shouldn't have a job.

Byrd was recommended by the then hitting coach who coached him in the

Interwoven league. Not really a front office chip.

@James T. O'Brien He looks like a 2B to me. Seems mechanical at SS. He catches what he gets to, but not much range. I don't think he's a starter-more a utility guy-2B, ss, 3B. Don't think he's anywhere near the hitter he's showing right now.

Actually if it weren't for the TJ surgery, Matz would probably be on the same level as Syndergaard. Most of the time its the prospects that are rarely talked about that become the better players. Me personally, I don't think Wheeler is ever going to be anything special. There have been plenty of pitchers that have had the "stuff" but how many of them have never panned out ? I move Wheeler before Matz in any trade. Plus he's a lefty

jenkins
jenkins

@jamesny I would never trade him. Same with Harvey, Wheeler, Thor

James T. O'Brien
James T. O'Brien

@jamesny the Mets value him highly, but he is their only left-handed starter prospect.  Other than Matz, the Mets only have Niese for lefty starters.  I don't think he's going anywhere, unless there is an amazing offer...

Trouble is Tulo says he wants to win so I am sure Mets don't look too attractive in that regard. He doesn't have no trade but can only be traded once during contract. Assuming he could waive that but it would basically mean he would control the trade so Mets would have another $20 million contract and he'd be stuck with Mets unless they could trade him to a winner. If Tulo goes, it will be to Yankees. Does make you wonder though if Wright will eventually reach this point and ask to be traded.

Sandy didn't "find" Byrd. He was taken as a favor for a friend working in the front office with him. That's not on Sandy

Diamonds in the ruff are guys who are making 2-3 million a year. Not $8 and 11.

William Bonilla

@Jaime  I think passing on Abreu was just plain stupid....it was a perfect situation...we are a team with no real 1B with over 50 million dollars coming off the books, in desperate need of Power, and not wanting to give up a draft pick to sign a player.....and here comes Abreu and we pass on him....sure there were question marks but all the scouts believed he had a good chance to be a 30 HR guy......right now hes looking like a 50 HR guy.......for 10 million a year -_-

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@Kevin John Um...no thanks.  Those three guys for the right to pay a guy $20M a year when he's going to put up much more pedestrian numbers with us?

James
James

@Kyle Fischer Completely disagree with that statement, he has done what he can with the parameters he was given.

Kyle Suta
Kyle Suta

It's a nice roster but not realistic. You actually have a reasonable trade proposal unlike a lot of people but 1. Sandy will NEVER trade Thor and 2. The mets couldn't take on tulo's contract

ken1010

@Dave D'Agnese

Sure.  But keep Dice-K around in case a starter gets hurt.  Dice-K is not that old.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

And that's why well never be able to trade for a big bat? Do you guys really think teams will give us a Stanton or a CarGo for free? Teams don't want Montero, they would want Wheeler or Thor. We have so many prospects that unlike Wheeler know how to pitch and don't just rely on "stuff". I would absolutely move Wheeler for the right guy. He should.not be untouchable

jamesny
jamesny

I don't see why he would be untouchable. He just started AA and has three top flight guys in front of him

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Dave D'Agnese For what it's worth - I was at the series @ ARI this year, and Trumbo surprised me with his defense in LF. He's not a high average hitter obviously, but I was surprised to see he was better of a player than I had assumed. Not saying I either agree or disagree with this idea - just saying Trumbo isn't just a DH with pop, he's actually a serviceable power hitting OF.

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Dave D'Agnese if youre not gonna utilize flores and montero has no spot in the rotation then whats the difference. turmbo will be a fine LFer for this team if healthy. look at dudes numbers. if he hits 30 homeruns in that lineup i could care less what his batting average is because with the players hitting in front of him 30 hrs even batting .240 should net him close to 100 rbis and thats all that matters to me.

jenkins
jenkins

@jamesny because he's more ready than Thor right now. He'll also be in NY next year (if they need him. The pitching coach compares him to Kershaw, and he's only a little off.

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@Jaime @Frank Tangorra  Cruz was never happening unless they grossly over paid.  He wanted to go somewhere he could DH half the time.

Abreu is a tough one.  If they brought in Abreu, they probably don't go after Granderson.  And if they kept Duda, he'd be the one playing LF, most likely.  And do we really want Duda in LF?  And if he's in LF, then who's playing RF?

jenkins
jenkins

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Dave D'Agnese In the equivalent of 3 full seasons, Trumbo averages .248, 34 HRs, 101 RBI, and knocks in a run less than every 6 ABs.  You're thinking of somebody else, evidently.

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Dave D'Agnese cuz i'd much rather have bobby abreu and eric young jr. in left field than mark trumbo said no one. come one bro. look at the alternatives. and for those people wanting tomas from cuba there is no guarantee he can hit ML pitching

Dave D'Agnese
Dave D'Agnese

@jenkins @BringBackDaveTelghe @Dave D'Agnese i love how these fans want us to hold on to every single prospect and say oh im not getting rid of him no way. and then expect us to make trades giving up gee and montero and expect to get great players back. i hope your content with mediocrity buddy

Michael Frias
Michael Frias

@ken1010 @Michael Frias @Jaime @Frank Tangorra  Agreed. I've always been a proponent of "It's not how much you spend, but how you spend it."  But when you know the current crop isn't good enough, as the past 4+ years have shown, you really have no choice but to invest more in the payroll.
