Travis d'Arnaud 5 (Baron)

Wheeler thinks d’Arnaud is going to take off

Zack Wheeler thinks C Travis d’Arnaud is “great behind the plate,” and he’s going to “catch fire and take off,” in 2014, he told SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, presented by Citi.

“When he came up, people doubted his behind-the-plate skills, but I think he was awesome,” Wheeler said of d’Arnaud. “I love throwing to him. He receives the ball tremendously well, he can make a border-line ball look like a strike. I think he’s been so concentrated on calling the game, he got caught up and maybe only had a few good at bats. I think next year he’s going to catch fire and take off.”

D’Arnaud struggled at the plate in 2013, hitting just .202 with a .286 OBP, 4 extra base hits and 5 RBI in 112 plate appearances.

Buck hit quite a few hrs and would only be a backup. Not sold on D'arnaud

Don't really think Syndergaard is ML ready this year.

Do you really want John Buck and his .219 BA back?

RA still had a winning season with 15 W's, despite getting little offense from his team. Who on the Mets staff had 15 wins?

Take off to Las Vegas???? John Buck is out there; Mets have no backup plan for catcher as usual.

I wish he would take off....to Toronto, and we could get R.A. back.

He is ranked the top catching prospect in the Major Leagues. He def has tons of potential and I'm sure he will flourish because hopefully is injury past is in the rear-view mirror.

I hope Wheeler is right about Travis having a big 2014 season. The Mets are still like Swiss Cheese. Too many holes. Sandy could joke about that we're offering Mets fans fresh swiss Cheese on Opening day at Citifield.

Yeah Sure, I'll remember this post when he's batting .220

You know who else is due to take off? IKE DAVIS! You heard it here folks- this will be the year the Hebrew Hammer finally breaks a .200 batting average!

Where's he off to, the Yankees as well? How about the Marlins? Best leave now while you can. Let's Go (elsewhere) Mets!!!

The only thing holding Travis back is his health. If he can finally stay healthy, I'm confident he could hit .280 with 15-20hrs to go along with 75-85 rbi's.

Travis has hit at every level, he's been a fantastic catcher at every level, he's going to be to me a Paul Lo'Duca type ball player I am positive.

By "take off" does he mean that he's going to hit .250?

If Travis, lagares, and Syndy excel this year it could be interesting

Travis has a ton of upside. I would love to see him for a full year with not much weight on his shoulders

I keep telling myself that about all the Mets players...year after year after year after year...

How about they all just shut up and play

For someone who is touted as "good behind the plate" d'Arnaud had more than his share of passed balls. How much of that was the pitcher's fault is hard to  judge. A stronger bat would allay all the doubts about this guy. I don't go for the constant hype on this blog calling him a sure-fire act when there is no concrete evidence that he is the real thing. I'm turned off by the "I think he will hit" or "not to worry, he should be good" approach.

I've had just about enough hype in regards to prospects. I will believe it when I see it. History should prove nothing is certain we need a quality catcher besides travis

Well, I hope so, since he's a major part of "the plan."

d'Arnaud has the ability to be a big time player for the Mets for years to come. The only thing that has held him back has been his injuries. Good chance that he will never match up to Piazza  with the bat but you can argue that no catcher has ever matched up to Piazza with the bat. I don't know what he will give us this year but I'm confident that he will take some nice steps in the right direction which is a big plus for the team and the lineup. The fact that the young pitchers we have like throwing to him brings a value that can't be matched since it looks like our future depends on the young pitchers that we have. Everything he does at the plate is just a nice bonus.

I think he'll hit...but he seems to be an injury risk. That might be a problem.

I'm hoping that TDA can stay healthy this year and start to hit.

Hope he means it and didn't just feel like he had to say something nice..
