Zack Wheeler 4 (Baron)

What’s on Tap: Wheeler faces Nationals at 1:10 p.m.

The Mets look to avoid getting swept on Thursday at 1:10 pm when they face the Nationals at Citi Field in the finale of their three-game series.

Zack Wheeler gets the start for the Mets in his regular season debut. He’ll be opposed by Tanner Roark for Washington. Jordan Zimmermann was scheduled to start for the Nationals, but has been scratched.

Daniel Murphy is expected to return from paternity leave prior to the game.

The game will air on SNY, and can be heard on WOR 710 AM radio.

It's only two games into the season. That said, the same things that have plagued this team in recent seasons have been on full display this week. Poor hitting, specifically pitch selection. Which is disturbing since Sandy's regime has tried hard to implement pitch selection as a foundation for the team's success  and it certainly has not worked well for him. The bullpen is struggling again. And we have no long-term answer at 1B and SS. We can hide Tejada there if we had a solid 1B. But we don't, so it only excaerbates an already weak lineup.

But, they'll be fine. It's unfair to get too worked up about any of this two games in. Fans certainly need to calm down and add perspective to everything. There's nothing you can do to help this team and the regime wants to get this team to become successful. They don't want to keep losing. They are well aware they need to start generating revenue for the team if it has any hope of becoming a contender. And the best way to generate revenue is by winning games and bringing fans to the park. It's just going to be a long process. No one said it was going to be easy and no one said 2014, or some other arbitrary season, was going to be the time when it all came together. There's still plenty of time though for this team to straighten things out.

I just want to see the young players and pitchers develop. I'm excited to see what Wheeler can do in his first full season; Harvey took a huge leap forward in his (I know thats unfair expectations but still). I'm excited to see Flores get a real opporunity to hit, hopefully; ditto for Lagares. I'm excited to see a TdA develop. And of course, it will be exciting to see the young arms come up in a few months.

But yeah,

LGM!!

Seriously, if it's bothering you guys this much, stop rooting for the Mets. Plain and simple. I'm a diehard Mets fan, but I'm not gonna give myself an aneursym over a baseball team's failures. Thinking people aren't going to go to games is silly. There will always be 15,000 to 20,000 people there because people see it as a chance to get good seats that they normally wouldn't.

Folks it's not 2 games, but years.

This team has been on the decline since 2009 and what makes anyone think 2014 will be any better? There is still no hitting, still no bullpen and still no moves to try and improve. Signing Bobby Abreu was worthless. If he gets called up then it's pathetic.

At least if they were playing the kids then we'd look and say that's the future. Instead we have a 40 year old pitcher, and aging right fielder, relief pitchers who are castoffs and a 40 year old washed up outfielder in the minors waiting to come up.

So again, why should we think this team will be better this season?

By the way...Sandy isn't clueless. What Sandy is, is stubborn.  He honestly believes HIS way is the ONLY way, and he's not diverging from his current tack no matter how much the Wilpons have to inflate their attendance records by buying tickets themselves and "donating" them to charity...  As much as no one wants to give Minaya credit for anything, the Mets need a GM that has the fiscal restraint of Sandy when needed but the willingness to take a financial risk when necessary like Minaya.

Good News pessimistic Met fans! Jordan Zimmerman got scratched from his start today.

Strasburg/Gonzalez vs. Gee/Colon

And the Nationals offense is one of the best in the NL. I mean Harper hitting sixth? Just a little bit of a talent level difference between the two teams.

I am in New York this week from Oklahoma. Today will be my first game at Citi Field. I have been to Shea 5 times and the Mets never lost when I have been to a game. They will get their first win today.

First win today. Bats break out against Zimmerman. Wheeler will be solid.

So in one thread:

Granderson was a "horrible signing"

d'arnaud is "terrible"

Murphy is "such a lady" (because he wanted to be around for the birth of his FIRST kid)

Young was a "terrible signing"

Sandy is "clueless"

and....

the team is "putrid"

Game 2 of 162.  Not dismissing that the Mets have problems, but man...there's a difference between realism and "keeping it real" folks..

Today we will get our first win! Wheeler will be solid and Murph will inject some life into the lineup!

Farnsworth looked great last night!  Glad he is here to block any pitcher who may have any upside whatsoever.  Sandy is clueless.

I know TDA has not looked good but you guys are unreal. Give the kid a break. I just love how everyone here talks about Flores as if he's Manny Ramirez yet TDA is a little leaguer.

Flores MLB Average .202 99 AB's     Minors Average .290

TDA     MLB Average .190 105 AB's   Minors Average .286

Give the kid a break. Could he be a bust? Absolutely, but let's give the kid a legit chance before we bury the guy. And I know Flores is 3 years younger but I just don't get the disparity between how the fans view the two of them. I guess it's just because of a homegrown kid versus an acquired guy but it's just ridiculous.

@C.K. Dexter Haven  FYI, when it comes to the Mets spending these days, JP Morgan calls the shots on what is or is not a worthwhile financial risk.  JP Morgan is why the payroll has been on a steady decline, not Sandy

@Charlie Callahan  If by some act of the Baseball Gods this team "turns it around" to win an astonishing 80 games in 2014, I will be the first to line up on here and eat crow.  Now will you, Charles, come back on here and applaud our baseball acumen when it turns out we were right, and this team is a mid-70 win team, at best?
it is 2 games, but if you can't see the writing on the wall, that is not our fault

No, it's 5 years. There is no reason to think this team will be any better anytime soon.

@brockl  The plan is to make money. The only way to really make money is to win. And winning doesn't happen overnight when you inherit a team that has no money or talent. We're in the middle of rebuilding the organization, not the major league team. It takes time.

But, yes, I agree about Grandy. I wanted no part of him due to his horrible average and strikeout rate. That said, it's not fair to criticize him just yet. He's two games in and missed most of last year. He'll be fine.

But you're deluding yourself if you don't think the team actually wants to win.

johnsec125
johnsec125

@Eric Koeller ok, how long should we give the organization? 2 weeks? a month? all star break? when they are 10 games out? 20 games?

Eric Koeller
Eric Koeller

in 2011, the Mets had no success on the field, were broke, and virtually no prospects in the minors. To come this far in 3 years itself is remarkable.

And when it comes to him spending money, most of you are clueless. All everyone complained about all offseason is that Sandy is being cheap and not spending enough. Two games into the year what are people  complaining about? That Sandy spent too much money on guys like Granderson!

@Steven Matregrano  If Ruben Tejada ever dared pull that lame stunt into home plate on Wally Backman's watch, he would be riding the pine for a week or more.  Terry probably bought him an ice cream sundae

Sorry, but your the clueless one.Everyone who was optioned to Vegas is not eligible to be recalled for 10 days. Farnsworth is up because he signed a minor league deal,he was not optioned to AAA.Please don't post on things you don't know anything about.Wish there was a way to block people who don't know what they are talking about

No, we'd know. But at least they'd get the chance. This team is just signing old junk that other teams didn't want. And it shows. Our bullpen is as bad as always and we are still a mess at shortstop and first. Again, same problems for years. So why will we be better? You tell me...

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Eric Koeller...Risk?  Colon was 29-15 with a sub 3 ERA the last 2 seasons in the hitter's league  Where's the risk in that?  Because he gave him 2 years?  He had to, to get the deal done. Because he's 40?  he only needs him for 2014 anyway so....?

Granderson? he's a name (aka shiny object) and as much as many Mets fans actually do have Yankee penis envy he IS a successful former yank. He fulfilled Sandy's "splash" quotient. an avg. of 42 HRs and 113 RBI's his last 2 full seasons...there's a risk there?

I guess it depends on your personal view of what a risk is...

@brockl  I would say no one expected a rose garden, but it's 2 games out of 162.  I'd also say there ARE some actual good things to take from the first 2 games (Lagares, Tejada, Papa Grande).  I've never EVER been a proponent of this BS that FA's can't play here because of the fans.  My feeling has been, the FA has the issue if he can't play here....but reading some of this stuff on here...wow.  It's not the idea that these things are being said mind you, it's that it just seems unrelenting.  I mean, tear the team down ok, but at some point don't you have to build them back up? Or at the very least leave it for a minute....?

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@brockl   (actual question for anyone)  In that play at the plate with Tejada...with the new rules, is he allowed to truck the catcher in that spot or does he have to either slide or give himself up?

nncyel

@brockl @Tarheel11I'm looking at Flores stats right now. There is no evidence of improvement over his minor league career. For example, 2010 554 AB 36 2B 11 HR 84 RBI; 2012 559 AB 30 2B 18 HR 75 RBI. You can debate facts - you just don't have the right to make them up.

The OP is spot on. Flores has not shown he can handle ML pitching any more than d'Arnuad.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@brockl @Tarheel11  If you want to say the injuries, that's fine. That's a legit issue. But the "facts" as you say are there. TDA has played 33 games and already he's horrible?  Yet Flores hasn't done anything either. Has Flores ever been considered a top prospect? No. At least TDA has shown the potential to be an every day player. Flores doesn't even have a position to play. Yet no matter what he does he gets a pass. It's just the discrepancy between the two.

But thanks chief

@Eric Koeller @johnsec125  Shh...reason doesn't do well around these parts. Fans want some arbitrary timeline for when this team should win. It's hilarious. Good post.

Eric Koeller

@johnsec125 @Eric Koeller  you can moan all you want. Im just saying the cynical criticism of the job Sandy has done isn't fair. The very second something goes wrong you guys act like its the end of the world. Guess what mets fans, Life happens! The Rangers are without their two best pitches and their SS,  the Braves lost their two best pitches. It happens

C.K. Dexter Haven

Thanks @upstater  kind of what i thought.  So in that regard...what was Tejada supposed to do in that situation after Teufel windmills him?  Oh, I know he should be faster.

nncyel

@brockl @nncyelAnd by the way, d'Arnaud was 2011 Eastern League (Double-A) MVP. Don't think Flores has anything like that on his resume.

Health and age I'll give you. Though 2 years isn't that big of a difference. Minor league career is even. If anything d'Arnaud has had a more impressive minor league career. So once again, the OP was spot on.

nncyel
nncyel

@brockl @nncyel2013 are all Las Vegas/PCL stats - notoriously inflated.

By the way you don't win arguments by callling your opponent ignorant and blind - it's a juvenile approach - try being a little less obnoxious.

upstater
upstater

@brockl @nncyelAnd more to the point: He should be playing in ML every day so we can see if he is any good. Team is going nowhere anyway so play the kids and see if there is a future for them. That means Flores and d'A play every day and Montero, Mejia, and Thor pitch every 5 days. Goodbye has-beens and never-wasses like Duda, Colon, Lannan, Young (both of them), Farnsworth,
