What’s on Tap: Mets travel to DC, Niese starts Friday

The Mets (19-21) start a weekend series in D.C. against the Nationals on Friday at 7:10 pm.

Jon Niese (2-2, 2.17 ERA) will start for the Mets. RHP Tanner Roark (2-1, 3.65) will start for the Nationals.

Jacob deGrom was fantastic Thursday night, but the Mets couldn’t muster any offense and were shut out by the Yankees for the second-consecutive night…

The standings reflect a lot of interesting home-road splits...Marlins absolutely crushing at home... Mets doing better on the road as we all know and have gotten used to... and the Phillies also are doing poorly at home and better on the road (and Citizens Bank Park is a hitters' park -- go figure.)

''Hunting for strikes''.. what a great battle plan.

The thing I find annoying is the decisions Terry makes to play some one and then one day later, he does the opposite! First when he said Duda won the job and he was the 1b, then plays Satin/Ike, and Duda played like 1 or two games...I am sure he did something like that with the pen. Recently, with Flores coming up, and he was supposed to play SS the majority of the time, and he played one game! Yes granted Flores was sick for a couple of days, but after that? Yeah Tejada got a couple of hits, so? Make a decision and stick to the plan. It seems like Terry is unsure on how to play his team sometimes. Based on his theory, if DeGrom pitches just like he did last night in his next start, does that mean he can replace Colon?

Forgetting the fact that the owners are broke and wouldn't do it anyway, but would the Mets be better off if they went out and signed Drew, Morales and say Ryan Madson? At least maybe Morales and Drew to try anything to get the offense going?

This is why Eric Young is a role player.....sit him for a week and then start him and he gets hot....but after a few games he stinks again. TC has to do a better job with this.....but for some reason he overplays Eric Young and underplays Lagares......This team will tease you every few weeks but realistically this team is a sub-par .500 team. Unless they bring in offensive players who know how to hit they will continue to suffer....David Wright included in this joke of an offense...he is back to swinging at breaking balls away....this team has no discipline at the plate not plate presence to understand how umps are calling the game or what the pitchers are pitching in certain situations....Robertson wanted to walk Duda to end the game yet he still swings at a ball in the dirt.....it won't happen but they have to fire Hudgens.....

WHY DO THE METS TAKE SO MANY PITCHES?  THE HITTERS ARE DOWN 0-1  1-2 BEFORE THEY KNOW IT. IF YOU CAN'T SCORE RUNS THEN TRY TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN!  USE THE SPEED THAT WE HAVE. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME A HIT AND RUN PLAY WAS TRIED?  IF THIS IS WHO WE HAVE TO GO TO WAR WITH EVERYDAY, THEN THE WAY WE DO THINGS  HAS TO CHANGE!   AND YES I'M SHOUTING!  IF ANYONE DOESN'T LIKE ALL CAPS THEN GO  ---- !

It really felt like the season ended last night.  What other games do they have that will draw the kind of attention the Subway Series did?  When Harvey comes back?  It's very hard to be excited about a team that can get COMPLETELY shut down offensively on any given night.

This is a .500 team no matter how you slice it.  Great starting pitching for the most part, the bullpen is coming around, but the team cannot hit consistently.  They say good pitching beats good hitting -- guess what -- you still need to score more runs than your opponent.  As others here have said, the hitting philosophy has to change.  I can't recall when I've seen a team score almost at will for two games, then to get shutout the next two.

And I still don't know what it is about Citi Field.  We can discuss the dimensions of the ballpark from now until the cows come home; other teams though don't seem to have a problem hitting HR's there.  It would appear that the ballpark is in the players' heads.

Cerrone it's time you built up the guts and asked a tough question. The fans to know why Lagares sat? One game. Fine he needs his rest like every other player but three out of four. Terry can't even say it's because cy is hot. He's not, aside from a couple of moments for him he has been a disaster. I know you'll say its early, well, I say not with this guy! His numbers have been steadily declining the last three years. To me this wasn't a year to catch lightning in a bottle this was a year to let the lightning out and be on track make a serious run in the playoffs in 2015. With the moves that were made this past offseason I have no confidence in this administration to get the job done, because frankly, since they got here, there best signings have been grandy (batting well under .210) and colon (42 with best ped years behind him).

It's really time to change the "hitting philosophy."  Whatever it is or is supposed to be, it's not working.  I've never seen a team take so many called third strikes, or watch so many good pitches to hit go right by them.  This happens night after night after night.

Then they go to Yankee Stadium and, as Terry explained, "do some stuff they normally don't do," like be aggressive and swing at first pitches.  They change the "hitting philosophy," and what happens? OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION IN THE BRONX!  Then they come back home and it's more swinging at garbage, ignoring good pitches, and taking called third strikes.

I'll never understand what the management is thinking; the solution seems so obvious.

I'm sick of this garbage from Collins, Lagares should be in centerfield every day. He is our most consistent hitter behind Murphy this season. He knows how to make contact and put the ball in play. He may not have the most power, but even power doesn't do much in Citifield. No excuse not to play Lagares. Tejada has been playing a little better of late but if you decided he will be the every day starter, send Flores down to get more work in so when Tejada breaks down again Flores will be ready and not rusty from sitting on the bench for 2 weeks

It's time to fire Collins. The Mets should be running away with the division. This is embarrassing. Who leaves a pitcher in to give up 6 and 7 runs in a game? No more excuses, get rid of him. He does not belong in NY.

Brian McCarthy

Stop blaming Collins. If Wright could do anything the Mets would have won.

Collins is a clueless loser- not only are his in game decisions suspect at best, but he has no idea how to handle young players or a bullpen, and it's becoming more obvious by the day.

Meanwhile, as more and more of Wally Backman's best players are taken from him (Flores, Montero, deGromm, Campbell, Abreu, etc.) his Las Vegas 51's keep on WINNING.

Wally's 51's on a 4 game winning streak, now 29-11 for a .725 WINNING%. next best win% in the entire PCL- .568

I cant take hearing Collins aftergame speech about how good Whitleys change up was and how he had great command...Ive seen scouting reports on.this kid and he is not a highly touted rookie and the Mets should have rocked him.Wasnt even one of the Yanks top ten prospects.

@metsblog boomer u r nuts the mets suck the owners suck the g.m. Sucks stop the next year b.s.!

THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS...TIME TO CHANGE THE DIMENSIONS OF CITIFIELD..THE BALLPARK IS A DISADVANTAGE TO ITS OWN BATTERS...MY SUGGESTION IS TO COPY THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MARLINS BALLPARK (RANK #14 IN MLB PARK FACTORS)...BY THE WAY CITIFIELD IS LAST (#30)...IMAGINE YOU SCORE 21 RUNS ON THE ROAD AND GET SHUT OUT TWICE WHEN YOU COME BACK HOME...IT IS CRAZY.

Typical METS, two steps forward and three steps back :{ This team is NOT a 90 win team, we will be very lucky if they can be a 500 team. They have played like this for 5 or 6 seasons and it will be hardfor them to change and win back all of the fans. I think it all starts with a winning season and build from there?

Albert E Lewis
Albert E Lewis

@Bob Burket I don't even see a .500 team here..and if we don't win 80 games this year what progress have we made? before this year Since Sandy has been GM he has had a 225-261 W/L record ...first year 77-85  next year 74-88 next year 74-88.. now this year who knows? If there is any progress here shouldn't it show up in the W/L column?

There is no earthly reason for anyone to want to come to this team on a mid season contract.

@Straw18  TC will NEVER do a good job with Managing the EY Situation, nor any other situation, because he is NOT GOOD AT MANAGING

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Straw18  Agreed. Watching Wright trying to pull everything makes you wonder if he hasn't got it in his head that there's no since in trying to go to right field since it more than likely won't go out like it did at Shea. So maybe because of that he's trying to pull everything even pitches on the outside part of the plate

@Bob Burket  HOW ABOUT A SUICIDE SQUEEZE!  COLLINS HAS LOST NOW A3 GAMES, 6 BECAUSE HE REFUSES TO SQUEEZE,  THIS TEAM HITS SO WELL.  USE THE DAM SQUEEZE COLLINS YOU JACK$$$.

@rc91li That's why it will be interesting to see if Sandy does anything else this year to help this team offensively.

@royhobbs9 Running away with the division? Let's see, crappy 1B, SS, no closer. Their big FA signing is under .200. Sounds like runaway material to me.

@Brian McCarthy  Collins makes the lineup and sits players like Lagares and Flores. Thats Collins, not Wright. Collins doesn't know how to manage a bullpen.

The ballpark doesn't matter when 75% of your lineup is batting around .200.

@Jim Yager I see 70 wins..this teams offense as it is now is not enough.. and its a shame because we have good young pitching that will lose close games.Last nite their was no excuse to lose to Chase Whitley a pitcher who is considered by scouts as a ok bullpen guy and nothing more.

Eric Slater

@jdr9 @royhobbs9 The division is there for the taking right now, as no one is playing particularly well.  If this team could score some runs, we would be in a much better position to make some sort of run.

@David Allen Pratt  I've been saying it since the year before he signed his extension

Albert E Lewis

@David Allen Pratt I wanted to trade him when Dickey was traded..but to many people are sentimental or see him as a the face of the franchise..Depending on what we could have gotten for him who knows? Not trading him may have been a big mistake.Flores could have been at 3b..maybe not as good as Wright but 270-15-16 hr 75 rbis in a full season maybe and we could have saved money.

@spelletrader Right. You have to hit the ball first. These guys consistently strike out 10 times or more a game.

@jdr9 @spelletrader  Make contact? First they have to take the bat off their f*cking shoulders!

They take strike at an alarming rate. No pitch recognition.
