Lucas Duda swings 3

What’s on Tap: Mets are off Monday

After taking two of three from the Reds over the weekend, the Mets are off on Monday.

The club returns to action on Tuesday night when they face the Braves in Atlanta in the first game of a nine game road trip.

Lucas Duda is expected to start at first base on Tuesday night as his audition at first base continues.

Bartolo Colon gets the start for the Mets, and will be opposed by Aaron Harang for Atlanta.

ON PAPER Colon vs. Harang should be a slam-dunk in our favor. Wanna bet? Anybody catch today's Yankee game? Nearly half of those primo seats behind home plate were unoccupied. Sellout my ass! By the end of the game the rest of the stadium was half-empty. Metaphor Time: Yankees go north with Yangervis Solarte (currently batting somewhere around .400). Mets go north with Omar Quintanilla. That pretty much says it all.

Quick, Ike didn't strike out enough!  Get Duda back in.

In order for the Mets to come out of April they have to have a .500 record in order to have a decent year to take 3rd place.

Isn't if funny that since Wright signed his big contract he has been taken it easy with HR's. Just saying.

I assume (hope) at some point early this season Matt Harvey's travel plans stop being a major story.  Just rehab and get well.  Don't need to know your itinerary.

One of these guys needs to be traded.  Period.  And to be honest I'm not sure which one I want it to be.    I lean towards keeping Ike.

The way the Mets are so deceptive about injuries, would it shock anyone of CYoung is out for an extending period of time as well?

Questions for those smarter than me: how long is d'Arnaud's leash? And is there any reason to believe this young lad will eventually hit well?

Please let this experiment end while Ike is still giving quality at bats. What happened to the Hot Hand plan?

I know we've gained the strikeout king in Granderson but, why  this barrage of strikeouts by the rest of the lineup? Isn't Hudgens the patience guru, preaching wait for your pitch, work the count, drive up the pitch count, So much 1st pitch swinging. Is this a change in philosophy or has all hell broken loose.  It looks like Hudgens has lost his audience.  Don't expect him to make it too far into the season.

Perhaps the Mets should shut down Niese too ... have him get his rotator cuff surgery ....not as if Mets will win anything this year.  Wont help if Niese makes it through most of the year and then requires surgery.

He signed prior to the 2013 season. He was on an MVP pace before he got hurt and we are only a week into year number 2. Ughh half the fans on this site are legally retarded.

Wright is a very good major league player, obviously. But don't expect too much out of him. He's not a star like Piazza or Beltran.

This team badly needs a Piazza or a Beltran or even a Delgado or Orleud.

@Frank Monastra To be honest, I think Sandy fears trading Ike and seeing him hit 40 HRs for another team. No bigger fear than for that to happen in the Bronx. Someone needs to go, but I would prefer that to be Duda.

tullydew

Yankees have already said they have no interest in Ike.

xplr

@chasesimms  The problem isn't trading one. The problem is, no one really wants them. The offers the Mets have received have been for low level guys who will probably be, at best, role players. Given Ike's salary, no one is all that excited.

nncyel
nncyel

@chasesimms  Ah, welcome to the world of a GM. Not so easy is it? A decision has to be made. Who are you going to trade? You wanna keep Ike. Ok - but 50% of the fan base thinks you're an idiot for keeping Ike. And 50% think you're an idiot if you keep Duda. Then 100%, relying on 20-20 hindsight, will criticize you when you trade Ike and he ends up hitting 30 HR for the Pirates while Duda hits 8 for the Mets.

nolrog
nolrog

@dreamer3kx The dumb part is not starting Duda, it's keeping Ike on the roster as well.  If you want Duda to be your starter, then fine, send Ike down and let him play every day at AAA.  Keeping both is stupid, limits the roster and puts pressure on whoever is the "starter" thinking, I gotta hit today or else the other guy will be there tomorrow.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@ifti99 They need him. Eric Young is not a major league player. A guy like him should not be striking out like he does. Chris will strike out, but give us 20 home runs and 30 doubles.

BringBackDaveTelghe

@Father Dooley I still think he'll be OK, no major league hitter can be evaluated in a week or even a month.  He missed hitting that ball out in the 8th yesterday by the slimmest of margins.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@Father Dooley Certainly more than 14 at bats. You know he may become a major league hitter after 500 at bats or even 1,000. Sometimes the light goes on later. Yadier Molina certainly wasn't a good hitter when he came up. Travis hit two very hard balls--one was struck down by a wall of wind. He's starting to come out of it. He needs confidence and some good luck. You have to give him the full season. The scouts are pretty solid on him.

xplr
xplr

@Father Dooley  I've been asking this question since spring training. d'Arnaud didn't hit last year, did't hit in spring training, and is not hitting now. He doesn't look very good at the plate. The problem is, the Mets have targeted him as "catcher of the future". I doubt Recker can play every day and there is no one else.

xplr

@scrubs_ERdoc  If you want power (which we had very little of last year), you're gonna get strikeouts. It's a tradeoff.

Tom Gallagher
Tom Gallagher

@Craig Good point. I'm not sure if Niese would be on board (not that we need to kowtow to what he wants, just that it would be another messy medical situation) but we've got a better shot at contending next year so why push it this year with him.

chasesimms
chasesimms

Haaa. Settle down with the retarded stuff William. Don't be so sensitive. You come across as a little girl who has a crush on Wright.

I'm a Wright fan. But the guy is not clutch. Period.

hashburry

@chasesimms  DW will end up in the HOF.  I am not a blinded DW fan, but to dismiss him is ridiculous.  He has been one of the 3 or 4 best 3rd basemen in baseball since he got to NY.  When he had a real team around him, he was absolutely the best third baseman in the NL.

rstpigeon
rstpigeon

@chasesimms He's a star but he's never been a huge HR hitter. No one ought to have expected such. He hits for average, gets a fair share of doubles, has some speed, and he's a really good 3B. There's more to being a star player than home runs. By that standard, Keith Hernandez was no star, but you could only say that if you look at the homers and never saw him play. And, I guess, not being a 30-40 HR a year guy holds back Derek Jeter - there goes the HOF bid...

I've been harsh with David, mostly due to his prolonged slumps. But, overall, he is a star. Yesterday, DW had two RBI's sitting on base for want of a single, not a HR. That bothers me more than anything. The Mets don't need power, if they'd just make proper contact at the right times.

chasesimms
chasesimms

Then trade Duda to an AL team. I cannot believe that no one wants him. He's not going to bring a lot back in return, but that's not the point.

Trade Duda for whatever ya get and just hand the damn starting job to Ike.

They can't keep doing what they are doing.

nncyel
nncyel

@ifti99 @chasesimms  The OP is correct. The Mets can't continue having 3 1Bmen. One has to go. Let's ignore what the return is going to be. One has to go. Who's is going to be?

chasesimms
chasesimms

Well my first thought is that if a GM is making decisions based on what the fans think is best, that team is in big trouble.

Sandy makes good money. It really isn't that complicated. He needs to have some balls, make a f -ing decision and live with it.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@cleonsvan @ifti99 Watching EYJ is absolutely painful.  I'll say this confidently, he's the worst hitter on this team, batting first, getting the most ABs and absolutely killing inning after inning.

Between TdA, the pitcher and then EYJ it's almost like every third inning is completely null and void.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@ifti99 "Didn't hit last year" and "didn't hit this spring"....two phrases that mean absolutely in context here.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@ifti99 "DÁrnaud didn't hit last year." He had 100 at bats after a season of injuries. You think that qualifies as an evaluation period? Spring Training? Really? This is why fans could never run a team.

Mack Ownes
Mack Ownes

@ifti99 @scrubs_ERdoc  I really thought he would focus on getting back to his Detroit hitting style. he obviously used the entire park there. Look at the doubles AND triples in his time there. The whole team though needs to use the entire field. Odd, that Ike seems to be doing the best job with that so far.

vimets
vimets

@rstpigeon Keith Hernandez was a huge star.

chasesimms
chasesimms

I understand that he doesn't need to hit home runs in order to be a "star player".

I'm more concerned about the fact that he consistently does not come through with the big hit.

Obviously the guy is an above average major league player and I'm glad he's a Met.

I'm simply saying that this team needs a player who is clutch, and who can "carry the team" from time to time.

Wright is not that guy. Clearly. Anyone who says otherwise is letting their blind fandom get in the way of reality.

@nncyel @ifti99@chasesimms

Career Duda vs. career Ike stats against RHP are remarkably similar, and neither can hit LHP.  I think you trade whoever gets better return.

nncyel

@I Respawn Daily @nncyel  I agree completely. I've always preferred Ike. But there are rumors about the organization not being happy with some aspects of his persona. I don't know if those are rumors or reality - no one is privy to that information. Ignoring the rumors I prefer Davis.

DON'T BE SLOPPY
DON'T BE SLOPPY

@nncyel If the only option was Ike or Duda...... I would keep Ike. I just have this feeling that if we let Ike go now in 2 yrs he will be the talk of MLB leading the league with 50+ homers on some other team not named The Mets.  I don't see Duda turning into that guy. Ike has show the ability.

nncyel

Still waiting on your decision, Respawn. Don't worry, go ahead, make a move. Unlike Alderson, we won't remember when you make the wrong decision.

nncyel

@I Respawn Daily @nncyel @chasesimms  A point for wittiness. I just approach problems with a little more rational thought, and a little less emotional imprudence. What would you do? Wittiness won't help you with the decision.

@cleonsvan @ifti99  Maybe. I'm not so sure scouts ratings on minor league guys is all that accurate. No one foresaw that Harvey would be anywhere near this good.

The point is, he looks awful at the plate. It's not just his average.

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@ifti99 One other thing everybody is missing here with DÁrnaud is that a catcher's learning curve is much longer because so much of his focus is on his defense and learning the pitchers--it definitely takes away from your hitting as a young player.
