What’s on tap Friday, August 15

The Mets begin a four-game series with the Cubs at Citi Field starting Friday at 7:10 pm ET.

Zack Wheeler (7-8, 3.53 ERA) will oppose LHP Travis Wood (7-9, 4.86).

In case you missed it…

The Nationals defeated the Mets, 4-1, on Thursday, completing a four-game sweep with their 11th-straight win at Citi Field >> Read more in the New York Post, Daily News, Star-Ledger, Newsday and MLB.com

“It’s a big blow to us, because we fought hard to get back in this thing,” Terry Collins said after the game. “We played very well the last couple of weeks to get back in kind of the mix. So, this is a big dent. I told the guys just a couple of minutes ago, ‘Let’s go win seven of the next eight.’ We’ll be back in the hunt.”

Collins said Thursday that Matt Harvey has been told (in conversations by phone with him and Sandy Alderson) that he will not pitch in games during 2014, so there is no need to push hard and try to make that happen.

The Mets re-signed 40-year-old Bobby Abreu to a minor-league contract and have assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Jacob deGrom said he feels good, but has yet to be told when he can return to a mound. He was put on the disabled list this past weekend with shoulder tendonitis.

Back in it because you can beat teams that are mediocre at best, when you play teams like SF and Wash. you lose 8 out of 10.

On the What's on Tap post maybe instead of the NL East Standings we should post this;

1) Texas  47-74

2) Colorado 47-74

3) Houston 50-72

4) Arizona 52-69

5) Cubs 52-68

6) Philadelphia 53-68

7) Minnesota 54-65

8)Boston 55-65

9) Mets 57-65

Climb that ladder boys our draft pick order is at risk!

A couple of things:

1) I'm definitely late on this, but Tulo AND Cargo had MAJOR season-ending surgeries (hip and knee, respectively). Good thing we didn't give up Thor for either of them... I never wanted to give up Thor nor did I like either of those two (due to inflated numbers at home).

2) Stupid signing of Abreu, imo. The mets aren't making the playoffs primarily due to the lack of hitting (especially if they were 0-17 in this series with RISP). Once the rosters expand, and if they bring up Abreu and play Abreu over, lets say a Kirk/MDD, I will be furious.

Its over now. Stick a fork in it! On a positive note, I caught my first foul ball last night. Only took 25 years! The rude lady behind me thought I was going to give it to her after she spilt her wine all over me trying to go for it. Nope!

Can't they put MDD in the leadoff spot? He's done it in the past and Grandy has a .306 OBP in the lead off spot. Not exactly good numbers

How about winning one of the next one and then revisit from there?

Hopefully Wright bounces back next year.. if he doesn't wow did Sandy make a big mistake......Hopefully Harvey is still the same pitcher in 2015...hopefully we aquire a SS......??????a lot of hopefullys

Another lost season. At this point I'm hoping they can secure a protected first round draft pick.

2015 is the year as Terry Collins told Harvey. No more excuses!!!

At the end of the day we are AGAIN left hoping.

Hoping Wright comes out either later in the season or after the season and admits he was hurt all year and gets himself fixed. Otherwise we are screwed big time with his contract.

Hoping d'Arnaud and Duda continue doing what they have been doing so at least we don't have to worry about those two positions going forward.

Hoping ownership steps up and addresses LF and SS.

Is it too much to hope that they go out and sign Tomas to play the OF (and he works out) and that they either trade for a SS or sign one? I have no clue anymore

What should a manager say? We're giving up? The team has no chance? You'd rip him for that, too.

This is what all coaches and managers do. It shouldn't be a surprise.

If he can consider playing .500 ball (before this series,) since the ASB, as "getting back in the mix," then he is truly clueless.

@Michael Vincent DiPaula Simply put, they are better teams. They hit, they hit in clutch, and they have tremendous pitching staffs. We're on our way there, but it just goes to show that we are still a few steps away. They've got themselves a nice infield core for a run this year.

@Tarheel11 Lol, ntm if the pick isn't protected, we know the excuse they'll use not to sign anybody in the offseason.....

Interesting list. I can't get used to Boston and Minnesota being there.

Hardly a big deal. The brought Abreu in for him to help LV win a title.

Could CY resurface soon at Vegas? Anything is possible with this organization.

With the Mets, I would definitely opt for a stronger adult beverage.

In all fairness, it felt like six games. Ugh.

@Tarheel11 Agreed, it's tough to score runs when you have already have one out before Murphy comes up. Just switch Granderson and den Dekker

@Tarheel11  As for Wright I hope hes not on the decline in his career....I think Duda and D'arnaud will continue to improve ... LF?....we will see I do think we will see some type of SS trade.... I doubt they sign Tomas they don't want to spend any money.

thecasuaLGM

@Tarheel11 Tomas sounds like another Cespedes from the scouting reports I've read and is predicted to sign for about the same money as Cespedes. So from a financial and baseball standpoint he is absolutely worth taking a gamble on since outside of making a blockbuster trade, the Mets aren't going to find the slugger they need on the FA market or within the organization

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Albert E Lewis @Tarheel11 Kind of agree. I do think SA will try to make some sort of deal for a young SS. I don't see a big money guy for SS but some kid.

And unfortunately I agree with you about spending money. I just don't see it.

Loathe to trade Crown Jewels, but I like Thor straight up for Javer Soler from Cubbies, maybe throw in MDD as they could use potential GG CF with all of the offensive talent. Boy, the Cubs may have more offensive prospects than the Mets do pitching.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@joe21 Not sure the Cubs would want MDD. They are trying out that kid Alcantara in CF now. Plus they still have Almora down in AA.

Seems like the Cubs only want pitching and/or catchers.

joe21
joe21

@Tarheel11 @joe21  I was thinking as a throw in with Thor, but some other secondary piece would do and I am not even against making Plawecki the second piece with Thor. I think that Soler is the target for Mets and Cubs plan to move Bryant to OF if they keep Baez, Russell and Castro. I think Thor for Soler straight up is fair, but since I really want him, I would add a secondary piece to get it done. he has crushed the ball at every level and even has 5 HRs in 22 games starting AAA and is a bit more advanced than other Cubbie prospects

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@joe21 @Tarheel11 I hear ya. But I think Theo is going to move Castro so he can have Russell at SS, Baez at 2B and Bryant at 3b.

Theo has done a nice job building that farm system up. And once they sign that big new tv contract this winter he'll have big time money to spend too.

joe21
joe21

@Tarheel11 @joe21  can you imagine if Theo could move Castro? their lineup as you have put forward would be:

Rizzo 1B

Baez 2B

Russell SS

Bryant 3B

Schwarber LF

Alcantara CF

Soler RF

My goodness, that is a murder's row

joe21
joe21

@Tarheel11 @joe21  OK, how about Thor, secondary piece, and a Pretty Please with Sugar on Top?

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@joe21 @Tarheel11 Exactly! Young, cheap controllable studs. And money to spend too. The Cubs have taken their lumps but Theo really built them up.
