Congrats to Murph!

Love Murphy but not if you have to sign him long term at 8-10 mill per, perfect time to move him is now and should be able to get nice return, Murphy would be a perfect fit in the AL, DH, 1B, 2B, and 3B option and get a top OF prospect or throw in a pitcher and get a more proven commodity, Colon can go to, plenty of options to go with, between the 2 you will save about $20 mill next year, Murphy was a 13th round pick who hit well in minors but did not really play at AAA level where Flores has killed it 2 years in a row and is an RBI machine at 22, he projects much higher then Murphy at the same age, give the kid the same chance Murph got and you might end up with another allstar!

I wonder if theirs a way to package Murph and Colon for a legit power bat?

Sometimes you have to take chances and Murphs value may never be higher...Flores has the potential to hit well enough at 2b.. maybe with more power than Murph yet not as high a BA...also depends on whats offered.

This is the first time I may not even tune into the AS game this year.  I just have zero interest this year...maybe it's from the scant represenation from the team or just getting bored with the whole charade.

Someone please explain something to me, because this makes no sense to me: if we are this close to being contenders (even if we are a year away), why is there talk of trading Murphy?  He is our best hitter!  What would we expect in return? Prospects? That just pushes our status as contenders out a few years!

Makes no sense to me...

So what are the odds Murphy is actually used in the game?

I think I'll have to miss the Derek Jeter-Star Game tonite.

Dear Bud Selig - PLEASE stop trying to sell us hats.

@semperfi He's a really good baseball player (murph) I like him on the Mets. One of the only natural hitters on the squad.

@BringBackDaveTelghe If it's anything like last night's HR derby marathon, it will be dreadful. Then again, I'm not sure anything could be as bad as that.

@Father Dooley MONEY!

This all about payroll allocation! With the days of a 140M payroll long gone this team has to worry about where to best allocate their resources. Are they better off giving Murphy 9-10M a year or use a Flores for example and use that 9-10M somewhere else.

This is real simple.

@Father Dooley  I think SA/TC hold Murphy this year because he can significantly contribute to helping this team have a nice second half, but I don't think he is the 2B of the future, so if they are not going to extend him, then they will move him because he will bring a decent return, either in the off-season or mid next year.

SA/TC are about self-preservation right now and a solid second half will go a long way to help. DM can help with that, but he wont be part of the long term future. he is a nice hitter, but not elite, so he can be replaced at substantially less money. you have Flores, Reynolds, and Herrara knocking at the door as early as next year, so definitely gone by 2016

Because as well as Murphy hit, he's still only a 65 RBI guy. 12HR & 65 RBI you can get anywhere. Put Flores at 2B everyday & he'll give you that easy. That's why.

I think the team should be both buyers and sellers.

Sell any guy you get an above expected return for that aren't part of the long term plan here.  Buy any guys that you can get for a good deal and expect to help next year.

@Father Dooley  Buyers are teams looking to fill a hole for a home stretch run and Sellers are teams whose season has totally disintegrating and looking towards next year. the Mets are not really either, so I would expect them to be holders more than anything else. Maybe Colon goes because he is not part of long term and can bring a nice return during a time of scarcity

@Father Dooley All depends on what they do in the 13 games they have between now and July 31. If they go 9-4 in that span, I think it's highly unlikely they'll sell pieces off at the deadline. Could even add a piece, but wouldn't bank on it. 8-5 or 7-6, and things are getting dicey. Anything 6-7 or worse and I think it's bye-bye Murphy and very likely Colon as well.

@metmike I agree ..but I doubt Flores will hit .300 more like a .260 hitter..though I could see a .260 15-20 hr 70-80 rbis year for Flores.

@joe21 @Father Dooley Again, agreed.  I think Colon goes, and goes soon.  But who takes his spot in the rotation if he gets traded this week?

@Andrew Fraraccio @Kevin VanTassell Hey Jeter is great and someday you can tell the kids "I saw that jeter guy play, he was great".  I'm as burned out on the Jeter victory laps but it is the all-star game, kind of what it's all about.

Let him have his moment, he deserves it/

If he does that line with a better OBP then Murphy he instantly becomes a more valuable player.  Defense should be a wash.
