Such pessimism. Amazing.

Back in June people on here were complaining that there would be no meaningful games in July. Yet here we are in August and we have a chance, albeit a difficult one, to make up ground on DC.

Too bad so many of you have given up on this season. I hope you don't quit in life like this.

That series ended our season. Too bad...

Estimated 2015 Payroll

Wright    17.5         (20M but he deferred 2.5M)

Grandy 16

Colon 11

Murphy 9        (5.7M this year, next year last year of arb)

Niese 7.1

Parnell 3.7            (3.7 this year also, but no clue what arb. will do with him missing whole year)

Gee   6                   (3.625 this year, next year is next to last year of arb)

EY  2.5                  (1.85 this year, next year is next to last year of arb)

Duda 5                 (1.637 this year, next year is next to last year of arb)

Tejada 2.5            (1.1 this year, next year is second year of arb)

Meija 3.0               (500k this year, next year first year of arb)

Rest 8.5                 assuming the 14 other players making 600K a year

TOTAL 91.8m

Exactly where is the money coming from to get all these players everyone wants? And I am being conservative with arb numbers I think and could be way under.

We just don't have the payroll flexibility that people think we do.

And yes I am bored today!

I know I'm in the minority here but I feel if we can get the bats going against a struggling Gio tonight and Wheeler continues his recent success that we can take this series, also us having deGrom going for the end of the series.I don't know,I just think we have a shot at this series.

Usually I'm the pessimist, but have a good feeling going in to DC.We will see...

I'm getting a lot of negative vibes here. C'mon people it doesn't hurt to dream a little.

2010 article on Fernando Martinez.

Care to guess how many guys in the National League are younger than Martinez? Five: Starlin Castro, Mike Stanton, Ruben Tejada, Jason Heyward, and Madison Bumgarner. How ’bout the International League? Three: Jesus Montero, Freddie Freeman, and Rick Porcello. That’s it. And to put it even further into perspective, there are only thirteen guys in the EASTERN League younger than Martinez! Yes, he has to stay healthy, and yes, his stock has slipped over the last 2 years. But he still deserves far more slack than he gets. And he won’t be out of options until the beginning of the 2013 season, so despite the fact that it seems like he’s been around forever, he still has the luxury of time.

Notice the OTHER young players all turned into stars.except Tejada and Martinez.

Why is den Dekker not here and starting in LF?

John Paul Cullinane

Watch this team take 2/3 and everyone on here will be talking about the WC again...then they will lose 3 in a row...So, 2-4 overall.  That's just what this team does and will continue to do.  They build you up to bash you down.  Give you light then pull down the shade.  Prop you up then pull the carpet from under you.

Instead of putting CY . i rather see Flores in LF i know he is not a LF by trade but i rather see him getting the playing time or Soup.

@Zac Tindall That ship has sailed. Doubt there will be a waiver deal. He'll get traded in off season. We were being offered a fringe prospect and a little bit of cash for him so I don't blame Sandy for not moving him.

Bring up den Dekker since he's hit so well in the majors. And Satin too.

Trade Niese for someone good

Trade Colon expecting to pay 1/2 of his salary

Increase payroll to 100 (one can always dream)

You then have 20 million to play with plus

Harvey,Gee, Noah, Wheeler and DeGrom

No way you pay EY or Tejada 2.5 and no way does Mejia get 3mil, Niese and Gee will make great trade chips especially if they finish strong saving $13mil+ and Murph should either be signed to a long term team friendly deal or moved, not worth $9-$12mil per year, hopefully Colon gets picked up off waivers, save another $11mil, Duda will be getting a nice raise but I don't think he will go to $5mill but you never know, might not be a bad idea to lock him up on a team friendly deal, plenty of options if you loose Colon and Niese or Gee plus we have options at SS and 2B, love DW but everyone knows we are over paying him, fits well in supporting role but will never be a $20million a year guy.

@Tarheel11 I still think, with this pitching, they can make a run at it provided they get good hard nosed contact type hitters. Solid defense, and the pitchers arms don't fall off.

@getalife  Because: (i) he's never proven he can hit major league pitching; (ii) we made a promise to Chris Young.

matmil

@John Paul Cullinane Perhaps, or maybe the pitching steps up and does more than we thought they could. It's something to hang your hat on.

Better question; should we all give up? You seem to have.

@Bob Burket @nymetsrule It's the Mets. We haven't played a meaningful September game in our own stadium before. Prove me wrong and I'll be thrilled, but right now it seems like we are just on schedule for our annual collapse.

Tarheel11

@nhmetsfan I actually like your plan. I just wonder if the Cheapons will increase payroll to 100m

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@sjm25 @Tarheel11 CY's money is already out. This is only players under contract. So you are at 92M without doing anything. That's why I think they will move Colon.Because you know how Sandy likes to bring in guys like CY, Valverde, Farnsworth etc.

matmil
matmil

@Tarheel11 They are gonna have to win a lot of low scoring one run games, but thats what they did in the late 60's and early 70's.

Zac Tindall
Zac Tindall

The money will come from trading gee colon and CY comes off the books as well as getting rid of Ey and tejada that should be roughly 22 million off the books that's plenty to sign a couple and trade for 1

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

Exactly! That's why SA needs to trade Colon and would consider trading Murphy.

Unfortunately you're right I can see him trying more CY type signings next year

Bob Burket

@sjm25 @shawnp6986  I would agree with you until you posted the statement "if our hitting can come alive". There you lost me. Team will not win with this offensive offense.

clyde69

@Karl Leopold @clyde69  Correct. I missed him but  we draft poorly. It started in 1962 with not taking Reggie Jackson.Tom Seaver was picked from a hat.

John Paul Cullinane

They could throw no-no's each night and they still would be a sub .500 team.

Karl Leopold

@Tarheel11 @sjm25 i think some your arbitration award #'s are a little high but you have erred on the side of too much instead of saying we have lots of $$$ which is a good approach

This goes to show that for those that think the mets are getting Tulo and Cargo they are crazy, no way the payroll goes up that much.

LF next year could very well be manned with a combo of MDD or KN and a right handed bat on the cheap

1harris1
1harris1

@matmil @1harris1 @Father Dooley @Ron W. Davis  Ha!  He could hit the long ball.  I'll give him that.

Didn't Kingman once hold the distinction of being the only player to play on a team from all four divisions in the span of one season (back when there were two divisions in each league)?

matmil
matmil

@1harris1 @matmil @Father Dooley @Ron W. Davis Yeah I think so. I'm sorry to say I couldn't stand Kingman. When they got him you knew it was over. I joined the Army soon after and missed most of his career with the Mets, Thankfully.
