What’s on Tap for Thursday, June 5

The Mets will look to avoid a three-game sweep when they take on the Cubs in Chicago on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Jacob deGrom (0-2, 2.42 ERA) gets the start for the Mets, opposed by Travis Wood (5-5, 5.15 ERA) for Chicago.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the Mets will make the 10th overall selection in the 2014 amateur draft.

Later on, Noah Syndergaard will start for Triple-A Las Vegas. It will be Syndergaard’s first start since being diagnosed with a mild flexor-pronator strain in his right elbow.

In case you missed it…

Last night at Wrigley Field, the Mets blew an early 3-0 lead as Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed four runs in 4 1/3 inning pitched, and Jeurys Familia uncorked a wild pitch that brought in the eventual winning run during a 5-4 loss to the Cubs >> Read more at MetsBlog, ESPN, MLB.com and Newsday

After Wednesday’s game, outfielder Andrew Brown was activated. To clear room for Brown, reliever Buddy Carlyle was designated for assignment.

Flores will be a significant liability at SS in the field. Flores proponents on this site talk about his success hitting in the minors. Well, reports of his fielding in the minors disparage his D. One cant learn to be a SS in the majors if you are mediocre at other positions. He is the slowest non- Colon on the team and will have poor range at SS.  I too like what I see when he is at the plate. For one, he doesn't sit with the bat on his shoulder like the rest of the team and the ball seems to jump off his bat.

Trade Duda for a left handed reliever who can actually get lefties out (our last 2 losses likely wouldn't have occurred, despite offense ineptitude)-For example, the Astros have 2 young lefties (Downs and Sipp) looking good and could use a DH with power

Play Flores at first with Campbell spelling him.

For now, Tejada should be the SS. He has hit .280 + for 2 of 3 full seasons  and is now hitting. He is a decent SS in the field and has decent range. If his average doesn't continue to rise, trade or sign a decent SS who can hit some.

To me trying to avoid the sweep by the Cubs is last on the list of importance of those 3 things tonight. Far and away Syndergaard's 1st start off the DL with the elbow issue tops the list. That's followed easily by the #10 pick in the draft. And then finally way at the bottom is if this bad Mets team can beat another bad team in the Cubs.

They just look exhausted to me.  Must be all the philly innings.

I can't recall a team that has been so putrid in bases loaded and RISP situations in general as the Mets have been over the past several years.  Over and again, leaving the bases loaded.  Mets should have won both of these games against the Cubbies so far.

I know Tejada came through with a HR last night but I believe Flores should be playing every day. It was interesting during the TV broadcast last night to hear Gary and Keith discussing the SS situation. Clearly Gary thinks Flores should be the regular (at least that is what I read into it) and Keith seemed to be ok with the platoon (kind of surprised me). TC seems to look for any justification to stick Tejada out there and his HR last night will probably add more fuel to that fire. How about keeping Flores out there until he proves he can't get the job done. I honestly don't see much of a defensive difference. Does Wilmer have to go 3-4 every time out for TC to let that happen? Tejada hit a HR, sure...great. That will probably buy him more consecutive starts. My bet is he'll be back to his old "automatic out" self in no time.

How embarrassing does a team have to get before they do something about games like the last 2 nights?

Mo Pena
Mo Pena

So according to Tc dice k is staying put in the rotation for now i don't agree with this move i believe dice k is more valuable for this team coming out the bullpen just my opinion

Another TERRIBLE LOSS LAST NIGHT. The pitching although not great was still not that bad. The hitting and being able to tack on runs is just HORRIBLE! Can we please sit Curtis Bay and Chris Young for a long time?

This was the perfect week to get back to 500 playing the cubs but this team couldn't even do that and now after tonight's game they are heading to san francisco not looking good for this team smh

The Mets are now 7-6 in a stretch of 14 games against teams  with a combined record 23 games below .500.  Today will be the 14th straight punching bag they've faced in sequence.  Starting Friday they start a 12 games stretch against teams with combined records 23 games above .500.   I just ordered another rack of ribs for the fat lady.

Boomer and Carton were playing a clip of TC's postgame where he was trying to explain the team's hitting philosophy and he kept mumbling and stammering.  It was brutal to listen to.

Montero can implode, just like Dice-K, but he'll grow from the experience. Dice-K will not. I know they're pressed for pitching with Dillon Gee out but we could at least be looking forward. Bring on the youth and let it all happen, let them grow this year.

hey wilpons...where is the accountability for that high priced DOPE you hired as a general manager??..do we have to sit and watch that hapless (but very rich) chris young hit .190 this year (just like he did last year), because your GM was dumb enough to sign him..and mr .198 Curtis granderson was "THE BEST" player available for 60 MILLION BUCKS???...hey wilpons..anyone that was held accountable for their job performance...WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN FIRED!!!

3.5 games out of first place with no legitimate 1B or SS...imagine if we spent just a few more bucks...PLEASE SANDY DO SOMETHING. The division is up for grabs!!!

@rustysribs  Good read.   How does Tejada not score on the double by Murphy with 2 outs.  Flores has done everything asked of him,why bring the guy up if you are going to platoon them.  Haven't we seen enough of Tejada.

theglider
theglider

Except Tejada is hitting .407 over his last eight games. So he is hitting well right now.

@oldrockingguy  No.  Its a year from the time the player signed, not the date of the draft.

And who pitches in the rotation?

rustysribs

@Macacawitz Yeah, but the Mets, unfortunately, are looking like punching bags too, more often than not. Punching bag vs punching bag = ugliness.

Dice k should be in the bullpen where he was doing a good job

@Mo Pena Tejada is a lifetime .250 hitter - possibly trending lower. No power (except for a lucky one occasionally), no speed, so-so range. Why anyone would prefer that when we have other opportunities is beyond me. Tejada had his chances. Let Flores have his.

Rimo Chaloney
Rimo Chaloney

@theglider  Flores has considerable upside offensively.  Let's not waste this year shuttling him back and forth to Vegas.  Let him play, see if he can hit.  Mets do need hitters in the worst way as we know!

theglider
theglider

That's on the coach who held him. As for Flores, he had one great game. Otherwise what has he done?

Mo Pena

Ethier bring montero back or lets see how Thor pitches tonight and maybe bring him up

Mo Pena

Agree free flores already

theglider

Tejada is hitting right now. That's why he's playing. Flores had one great fame. Otherwise he's a .220 hitter with one run batted in. Sure, let him play and let's see what he does. But in the past two years he hasn't done much.

rustysribs
rustysribs

@theglider And Tejada is hot for 8 games. What has done besides that over the past few years. Mediocrity at best?

theglider
theglider

When he does he can sit, but he isn't now.

theglider
theglider

Montero needs to work on his control. He gave up too many hits and walked too many.

Dice-K has had two starts in the past week and a half. He pitched ok last night but tired and did well in the doubleheader. If he does well again he can then be traded for a hitter. He's being showcased.

theglider
theglider

No. He had a bad year last year and did well the two years prior to that. So we know he can hit major league pitching. And he's 24?

rustysribs
rustysribs

@theglider We'll see I suppose. I'm not optimistic. In the meantime, we have a player with a ton more potential not given the opportunity to get into any kind of groove for an extended period of time.

Mo Pena
Mo Pena

At this point i don't think we can get a hitter to many teams in the hunted

rustysribs
rustysribs

@theglider Sorry, but I see more upside with Flores. We can agree to disagree though.

theglider
theglider

Potential is also what d'Arnaud has. It means nothing if they can't perform. Flores has an on base percentage of .281.

theglider
theglider

Teams need pitching. Dice-K is our only real reading piece with experience. If a team wants a spot starter or long reliever, he's it

rustysribs
rustysribs

@theglider When his opportunities are stop and go, it's tough. d'Arnaud is being given that extended opportunity and the benefit of the doubt. Flores isn't. We know what Tejada is. Let's find out about Flores by letting the guy play regularly.
