With Lester now gone to the A's, maybe panic is setting in for some teams?

Read this today -

Would you give Kemp a five-year, $53-million contract as a free agent?

Kemp for Colon and Chris Young. Remember, Colon is due $11 million next season. For that reason, he likely will not be a Met in 2015.

Kemp is owed about $7 million for the rest of 2014. Colon and Young are owed a combined $5.5 million. So the Dodgers kick in half that difference (about $750,000) to make the trade cash-neutral for 2014.

For 2015, Kemp is owed $21 million. But the Mets will have subtracted Colon's $11 million, so it's only a $10 million gamble for next season.

The haggling will really come over 2016-19, when Kemp will be paid $21.5 million per for a total of $86 million. Or maybe it's not that complicated: the Mets pay half and the Dodgers pay half.

Most of you need to get over it. There isn't much we can do at the deadline right now without seriously overpaying. Besides, do you really believe this team will play over .600 ball the rest of the way?

YOU CAN BET THE EVER LOVING FARM THAT ALDERSON DOES NOTHING TO IMPROVE THE TEAM OFFENSE TODAY OR ANYTIME SOON. ITS SO SAD THAT THE METS ARE CLOSE AND COULD MAKE A RUN BUT WE DON'T HAVE A GM OR OWNERSHIP WHO CARES ENOUGH ABOUT WINNING TO AT LEAST TRY TO MAKE A RUN AT THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR.

Making a trade just for the sake of doing something is beyond ridiculous. Making a deadline deal that costs us young arms is also ridiculous unless the return is an all star, and that's not happening .

And to all those who say they're on a pace to win whatever many games, they were on a pace to go 0-162 after game 1. The Phillies were on pace to go 162-0 after the first game. It's not where you start.

If the Mets go 34-20 the rest of the season they finish with 86 wins. That may get them into the playoffs or at least a tie for the last position.

In their last 23 games the Mets are 15-8. If they continue at that pace, they finish with 87 wins. This is manageable, but TC has got to stop experimenting with the lineup and Gee and Niese need to find themselves quickly. CY also needs to sit as he is not a viable option.

34-20 the rest of the way may earn us a wildcard spot.  34-20.  Is it doable?  I would say it is if we add an ASS-KICKIN' BAT TO THE LINEUP.

Today is the day we can do that.  This is YOUR day to shine Sandy, GIT 'ER DONE!!!

If this team could make a deal even for Marlon Byrd to come back, that alone would be a solid move. Put him in RF and move Grandy to LF. Byrd wouldn't cost much and maybe they could make a deal for Castro. If you add those 2 to the lineup we currently have, and it seems formidable and this team might actually be able to make some noise in September. Even Byrd alone would be nice even for next year as a stop gap. The free agent OFs this offseason, outside of Nelson Cruz, are nothing special.

This is the first time in 5-6 years where I truly feel this team is like 2-3 solid pieces away.

Really need Niese and Gee to get rolling again, they start pitching well again, the Mets could go on a good roll.

SIGN THE CUBAN no more excuses please you are gona get revenues from TV deals come on stop the really small market excuses or even better like dodgers owner did sell he was forced due to a divorce we ended up with Mr moneyball gm fake and arrogant Sandy The real moneyball gm is billy beane. Omar was bad but he was dealing with Owners who was dealing with Madoff who sat behind homeplate for a lot games a lot of the young talent was drafted by omar. These owners have too get over the Bay and Perez signings and start getting talent in here threw cuba draft and free agent. Pay up to sell out no more mediocrity and excuses and we coulda excuses

What's on tap for Thursday

NOTHING!!!

Sandy will be taking a long nap today.

they've played 108 games and are still under .500. First things first.

Jim Yager

What is really sad is how close the METS are and the fact that the front office, wlll do NOTHING!! The team and fans need a sign from Sand that he really wants this team to win, they need some fresh blood, a spark, to get them going. Will Sandy do something, HELL NO!! Same as always, sit back and watch them slip away, again :{

Don't expect much today. But I will say this: I am sad the Mets aren't playing tonight, and glad I can still be saying that this season!

Should we have gone for Lester? Should we have traded one of our top pitchers and a key player for Cespedes?

You're very quick to offer criticism but not to offer any solutions.

@Andy It's actually Lester & Gomes for Cespedes.

Karl Leopold

@Andy wow it seems to be an actual baseball trade - not a salary dump

Glad this happened at 10:00am and not 3:30pm - gives teams an opportunity to try and counter

@Father Dooley  Just went 15-10 this month. We repeat that for the next two months and, yeah, it seems pretty doable, right?

@Steve Iannella marlon byrd isn't that solid piece. marlon byrd is the type of player a team already in the race gets at the deadline. not a team that struggles for mediocrity. you give up pieces for him and you'll have to replace before the mets really make any noise.

@Jim Yager What exactly would you like the Mets to do? Make another Kazmir for what's-his-face trade to appease the fan base when the Mets clearly aren't a contender this year? Some of you Mets fans make me laugh. Can't you see that they are on the verge of a golden age? That things are falling into place as our young talent comes of age? Patience, my friend. I'm pretty sure Sandy knows what's he doing.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

What's he supposed to do? There aren't any worthwhile available bats right now. You can argue Byrd but seems like there might be a bidding war for him

We don't need pitching.

John Connolly
John Connolly

@theglider  true we don't have a top pitcher in the lester class and don't be surprised lester goes back to red sox next year  we don't have any top pitchers compared to the As whole pitching staff Lester is now As numb 1, mets don't have a pitcher who could be As number 1 pitcher on this staff we couldn't trade for lester cant afford him we have colon the usual excuse anyway and we don't have an outfielder compared to cespedes. No solutions till wilpon sells and someone brings in a good general manager

mingo
mingo

@Billy Suede @Steve Iannella  I might disagree. Byrd would be good for this team.

And I think that this deal could be done with a mid level prospect or two. Someone like Jayce Boyd and Michael Fulmer. The problem as I see it is that the Phillies are going to have others asking for this as well and will ask for the moon and the Mets are not going to spend much in prospects to get this done right now.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't blame the Mets for not overspending.

John Connolly
John Connolly

@Billy Suede @John Connolly  Rusney Castillo who the Yankees just offered 45mill too Mets went there to scout him or went for the free food another guy most mets fans wont want like Abreu or chapman because Bay or Perez Mets owners and cerrone turn mets fans into small market mentality

"On the verge of a golden age" is pushing it. Always remember the people who own the team.

As for the immediate future, while there's definitely cause for optimism with all the young pitching talent, there is still work to be done for this team to be taken seriously as a legitimate contender. They should be looking today to make deals that will address their needs for 2015 and immediately beyond. If none are available, don't do anything.

He should trade Murphy and Colon for AAA positional prospects that can help next year.

@Father Dooley

Okay, I won't say Nieuwenhuis or Flores. How about Wheeler or deGrom for your mystery bat?

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Father Dooley @Tarheel11 @mingo Don't get me wrong, I'd love to get a "bat". Problem is it appears that the Tulo's Cargo's and even Castro are not available right now. They are more than likely off season acquisitions. Not that I'm crazy about any of the above but you can't blame Sandy if there's nothing available. You really want Rios?

I just don't think there are any bats available. Pitchers, yes. But we don't need pitching.
