I heard they added a third division, the NL East, to baseball.

I thought it was colon at 1:35? how do you consistently screw up what Google could answer?

When you spin this out...smh...so the Mets are closer to winning the division than a WC spot, but as there are 3 better teams in front of them, AND one of those teams are getting healthy (Nats) it is HIGHLY unlikely the Mets will "finish in the money".  That SHOULD make them "sellers" at the trade deadline, right?  Except, when they trade is it for yet more prospects?  ok, but to what end?  To trade established players (Murph, Colon, Gee, Niese, etc.) for prospects is just placing the Mets in a perpetual state of rebuilding. Add to this, if the Mets did happen to trade prospects for established players, are any of you/us confident the Mets will target high priced/high end available players?  OR be able to pay to retain them if need be? Considering they never seem to target high end players as FA.   Congrats Sandy/Fred/Jeff/Saul/Bud....you've effectively turned the team from Queens into the New York Royals

So said another way, they are closer to catching Arizona than the wildcard leaders...I really wonder about stupid stats.

For the record...that stolen base should not all be blamed on Murph....he is not a typical base stealer and I doubt that he made the decision to steal on his own....and if he did, shame on the coaches....but if the coach told him to stay and he went anyway, that is another problem entirely..

3 games out from the bottom. Nice job Sandy! Nice job Terry!! If David goes on the DL, we should get there by next weekend. Then we can trade Murphy for prospects two years away. Because we don't want to pay $9M next year for a .300 hitter and the NL hits leader, do we?

Why even bother putting the wild card standings up? The season has been over since may.

Just throwing this out there. As a Met fan do you prefer

Tejada at SS, Murphy at 2b, Niese and Gee in rotation, reliever signings like Dice K, Valverde, Farnsworth and Lannan

OR

JJ Hardy at SS, Flores (Reynolds) at 2b, Cuban OF (can't think of his name right now), deGrom and one of the other kids in the rotation and then kids in the bullpen. As well as the prospects you received in the Murphy, Gee, Niese and Dice K trades.

Total cost would almost be a wash. But that's why they would consider trading a Murphy.

I know lots of variables, assumptions on signings, etc. But just throwing an example out there of payroll allocation!

sandybgone

7.5 games out of the wild card is almost insurmountable unless the Mets run off a nice win streak but they have not be able to run a win streak of more than I believe 4...and the bigger problem is when they go on a nice stretch..4 out of 5 or 5 out of 6...they follow it up with a long losing streak. This season is over...I am glad my expectations were not high again..I expect even more payroll cutting moves this trade deadline as the Mets look to continue to lower payroll...

Prove me wrong Wilpons

Tarheel11

At this point, we can fairly logically assume they have a limited payroll going forward and aren't going to win anything this year (thanks captain obvious I know). So why not free up some money to get more "payroll flexibility"? Get what you can for Colon, give CY away.

Dice K anyone?

Have we reached the point of trade rumor watch?

Really need that number 1 pick for the 2022 run!!! Hey where is Conforto by the way??

Like I've been saying, closer to last place than first place. Says a lot

i would think employees of last place teams would want to refrain from posting the wild card standings.

How about the 2015 Draft Order Standings instead of the wild card

sandybgone

@C.K. Dexter Haven great post CK...sadly this is the state of the Mets right now....and I accept it...however what I do not accept is when they say that they have the money and ability to bring in the right players but they do the opposite...(with the exception of Grandy) Colon was signed to only be traded for prospects IMO,

To me, I do not see where the philosophy changes anytime soon so I think we will have to accept this for a while

cleonsvan

@sandybgone  I'm sure that was on Terry. Did you hear Darling admit it was Backman who immediately fixed d'Arnaud by moving his back foot closer to the plate? Terry is pathetic.

Those are the draft pick standings. Just read bottom up.

Colon maybe, but unfortunately Murphy will be the salary cut. And then you will hear rumors about an unhappy wright ad him wanting out, which i dont blame anyone from jumping from this sinking ship

@shea  Not around here. The loser mentality is the real "face"of this franchise.

eric88

@D True. The  wildcard at his point is silly. We have a shot at a top 5 draft pick. Only 3 games out of dead last in the league. Sandy said Terry is doing a good job??

sayhey24

I agree, except that I think a guy like Grandy at his age should not have been brought in unless he was a piece that put us over the top. He will be declining in the next few years and we may never see any real benefit from his contract.

wilpondscm

@cleonsvan terry is a yes man and is protected via nepotism. will tow the company line and do nothing to improve the team. though of course the problems of this organization goes way past their appointed figure head on the bench.

ShawnP

@cleonsvan  Most of us on here along with Backman fixed that problem with TDA.Terry & the major league staff couldn't figure this out??

sandybgone
sandybgone

@cleonsvan I don't want to label him as pathetic...we get what we paid for...history shows that Collins was never a good manager...cant blame Collins...this was Sandy all the way...another bad acquisition...

@Steven Matregrano @Tarheel11 All I'm trying to do is look at things objectively and use players that everyone here keeps talking about. Do I want them? Not necessarily, In fact I have been the one here saying the scouts have been saying Reynolds is a back up and getting ripped by people here for it. I just asked a question. The point is people like you who keep acting like they are going to spend money when they want to. Seriously? Please give me ONE indication they can/will. Just one. Every action they have taken says otherwise. Everything you read about their finances says otherwise. Yet you think they have money to spend and will "open the check book".

This team is obviously financially strapped. Everything points to them not spending. So this becomes about how SA allocates the limited resources he does have. My point is for the people here who act like God is offending them to say that Murphy be traded. Guess what, if they can use that 9,10,11,12, whatever a year to fill other holes they will do it.

I know you are in love with Tejada but the guy at his best is a 2.0 WAR player which is barely a starter! Yet at his worst the guy is horrible! And Murphy for as great of a hitter as he is, he is a huge negative defensive player.

@Wayno  Should have traded wright before he was a free agent. stuck with him.

Aside from this blog, where are these rumors coming from?

Tarheel11

@Wayno Good point. I never thought about that. You're right I could see Wright being pissed if they move Murphy. Does he then go to SA and bitch?

Wayno
Wayno

Can you imagine if he turned mets down somehow and moved on???

ken1010
ken1010

@sayhey24 They have to put in pieces at some point, and I think they do expect to be competitive during Grandy's tenure.  That said, he'll be playing the Cliff Floyd role, as a useful player and good mentor.  We need to add three or four more solid players - and they could cost $10m per year each.  Getting by on an $80m payroll will keep us playing with AAAA players.

Sandy completely misread the market on Hawkins (so he got Valverde) and Byrd (so he got CY).  Those are they type of mistakes that are keeping the Mets from approaching contention.

Kyle Suta
Kyle Suta

No he doesn't. The wilpons have David wright wrapped around their finger. He loves it here. Besides, he's used to losing. Like us fans he tells himself it's gonna get better and wait too next year but that is a phrase that is repeated every year becuase nothing will ever change here.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Wayno Exactly! Boras is capable of doing anything! I won't feel comfortable until it's a done deal. If I were that kid, I'd want my money now! Sign and then go spend some of that money and get your career started!

ShawnP
ShawnP

@Tarheel11 @Wayno  Had no idea that Boras was his agent, that kinda changes the whole dynamic of signing this kid. With the Mets being the laughing stock of MLB right now I wouldn't be surprised if Boras swayed this kid in another direction.

At the end of the day though,it all comes down to money.
