The Mets didn’t make any trades prior to Thursday’s non-waiver deadline. General manager Sandy Alderson addressed the team’s lack of activity after the deadline >> Read more and listen to Alderson’s remarks at MetsBlog

There was interest in Bartolo Colon and Daniel Murphy, but teams were not willing to meet Alderson’s asking price.

The Mets were recently seen scouting the Cubs, who have shortstops Starlin Castro and Javier Baez >> Read more at MetsBlog

The key to our 2014 playoff hopes, with everything clicking, is LF production.

Next 30 gms, 20-10 we'll be Gucci Louie Prada

Now that we are stuck with this roster , for what appears to be the rest of the season I think the best lineup they can put out there would be

E Young

Granderson

Murphy

Duda

Wright

dArnaud

Lagares

Tejada

Wright isn't producing enough to warrant hitting in the 3 spot anymore. Hopefully he can produce enough clutch hits to be a good RBI guy and protect Duda. Teams are going to pitch around Duda now that he's hot.

Tough to be disappointed by something you had no reasonable expectation of happening in the first place.  And in other news.....

This is going to be a tough month.  Only 10 games vs. losing squads.  The remaining games (19?) vs. division leaders or WC front runners. Need another 5-7 HR month from Duda, another .280+ month from TDA, Murph to do....what he does, and Wright to find SOME XBH power.

Just want to say I am a little disappointed the Mets didn't do anything at the trade deadline yesterday, however I'm really happy they didn't send Syndegaard packing. With Harvey coming off TJ, Noah is the type of guy who can lead this rotation too. Think about how nasty our pitching staff is going to be the next few years. 5.5 games out is still a long ways to go, but nothing is impossible. You gotta think Sandy will upgrade some positions in the Winter.

After yesterday, I am done with this team. I will no longer support it any way whatsoever. There is absolutely no reason they couldn't have picked up Cespedes, Tulo, Cargo, Lackey, Lester, Franklin, Price and Drew yesterday. They would have been set for years and won WS after WS. Instead they want to play these young kids who appear to be the future and I don't care about that, I want everything now, now, NOW. I'm ebaying all my Mets stuff. I'm done.

5.5 games out of WC spot and we could not upgrade at all? Cabrera projects 14hrs and 60rbis in a down season and Nats got him for nothing, Tejada has 4hrs for his career. Give denDekker a shot the rest of the way, 2nd best defender in organization after Lagares and he is tearing up AAA with the bat, waive the Youngs

I see the Met Pom-Pom's are out in full force! Hope springs eternal!!! What a joke this team is as well as the owners who run it!

These next two months are all about growth from our young players, seeing who will be part of this team going forward.

The team is at least watchable again. As long as the pitching holds up, we have a chance in every game no matter who we play.

This will be an interesting month for sure. Of course I would love it if the Mets continue to play well, but the fact that we know we have something in d'Arnaud, Duda, and a diamond in the rough in Degrom, man... it makes me happy for next year.  I get that we were told 2014 was the year, but there were so many spots with question marks coming into this season, at least there will be 2 less going into 2015.  They really are one solid bat away from seriously contending for a playoff spot next year.

Some people on here are amazing. This team wi run out of gas. They're irrelevant.

We're 5 1/2 games out with two months to go. I'm glad the team doesn't share some of this pessism.

hashburry

@Flocaveli If the Mets reproduce their best month, they basically get to .500.  That is not a recipe for getting past all the teams they need to leapfrog to get a playoff spot.  There is an unrealistic assumption that every other team will play significantly worse than the Mets.  Dug themselves too big a hole in May and June.

matmil

If they make the playoffs this year that would be a real gift. We are probably gonna have to build towards next year.

@matmil Personally, I would move TdA up further. But it's a moot point, I no longer support the Mets.

@C.K. Dexter Haven Sorry but Wright needs to come out of the line-up altogether. Rotator cuff issues can cause all sorts of weakness and stiffness. He can barely get a hit let alone XBH. I really think he should have gone on the 15 day DL before the All Star break - taken the cortisone shot and been fresh and ready to go for the second half. That ship has sailed - I dare say his fielding is probably still better than either Campbell or Flores but his offense just isn't there. I don't think he's washed up or anything, but he's been very inconsistent and more so now with the injury. He batted .320 in May and was batting well over .300 from the middle of June to the ASB but now not so much.  Don't think we'd lose anything by sitting him for a few days to see what Flores can do with the bat since obviously he's not coming in for Tejada.

Kevin John
Kevin John

I'm anxious to see how they finish the season, but if its anything below .500, Terry really needs to go & Backman needs to be promoted.

John Paul Cullinane

They did nothing to improve this team and are currently 4 games under after a winning streak.  This team can win 5 games in a row and then lose the next 7.  Is it pessimism?  No.  It's the reality of the situation.  This is a 74 win team and if you think they will compete and hop over the teams in front of them, you are dillusional and just a Mets apologist.

Do you know why they shut down young guys?  Because they have never played seasons this long...so, yes...this team will run out of gas playing 20 days in a row in August.  I'm sorry all of us aren't in cheerleaders' outfits with pom-poms, but come back to me when they make the playoffs...or better yet, have a winning season.  3 playoff appearances in over 25 years?  Pathetic.

You can only pin your hope on unproven prospects and the future for so many years.  At some point, you have to prove your plan.  The Mets are not entitled to have fans...they have to give people something to cheer.  If you're one that will just cheer laundry, good for you...but I would argue that fans have more passion that are fed up with this team building you up to just bash you down.

@mets74 @matmil Where would u move TdA?   Not where DW, DM LD are and he doesn't have the speed to hit 1st or 2nd.

What happened 74?

nncyel

@Cheryl Ann Come out of the lineup, completely? Yikes. And everyone around here is always making fun of TC. And then many of you come up with ridiculous suggestions like this post. DW was hot before the break, and now he's cool. But he's always been a bit of a streaky hitter. And you're gonna sit him for Wilmer Flores so that you can see what Flores can do? We've seen what Flores can do. Not much. I have high hopes for him in the long run, but right now he's not living up to his PCL stats. And you want to replace the team's best player and team leader with an overmatched rookie? Not going to happen. Thank God.

@John Paul Cullinane That's how long it takes when you have a bunch of bad long term contracts and financial constraints. Plus the goal shouldn't be to contend. It should be to contend continuously over a period of at least 5 years, preferably longer. It should be to build a continuous contender like the Cardinals or Rays. You do that and fans will come, the Wilpons will loosen the purse strings, and all will be fun in Queens.

matmil

Hit him 8. I'm not a fan of Tejada. If he learned to choke up and make more contact I would like him a lot more. He needs to be more like Felix Millan if he's gonna bat second.

mets74
mets74

@matmil I'm just done. It just takes so much out of me, all this pressure of having to support this team and they're not doing exactly what they should be doing because people on this blog say so and I'm a follower and I am following all those people who say this team is doing nothing and will never do anything and nothing eill ever happen ever.

matmil
matmil

I suppose you could hit Tejada 2 but he's not savvy enough to sacrifice himself to push runners along.

Cheryl Ann
Cheryl Ann

@nncyel Right now he is not the team's best player. Him continuing to push himself out there and into the line-up isn't doing anyone any good. If he's hurt, then he should come out, rest and get well. Who knows if playing through this injury can or will make it worse, but honestly is it worth the risk at this point? As the Captain he needs to realize that he isn't helping the team and let someone else try. Heaven knows he's picked up most if not all of the slack from the bad line-ups year after year - this is his year to slump or whatever.  Its' not a knock, its just the reality of the situation.

I don't believe Campbell would hit worse than Wright is now and if Flores isn't a fit for this team, then they'd got to get him some major league ABs. Holding him out just makes would-be buyers wary about his numbers in Las Vegas.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

The Mets could have spent an additional $30 million on 1 year deals this year and be a playoff contending team without sacrificing the future.  They didn't do it.

Had they done this, they would have seen a return on the additional investment and not fractured their fan base even further.

Not to mention, every single person on here, not in hindsight, but at the time, knew the Chris Young deal was AWFUL.  So, that $30 million should really be $37 million to spend...and think about what this team could be...

As a fan, it makes me mad, but as a businessman - I just don't get it at all.  I guess The Wilpons' favorite color is red.

matmil
matmil

He needs more time in the league before you bat him 3. That is the key spot in any lineup.

matmil
matmil

TDa in this lineup has to hit 6 because he seems to have more power right now than Lagares.

Michael Jacoutot
Michael Jacoutot

@mets74 @matmil we've made it this far.. we're close.  if you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, it's understandable.  Harvey put a wrench in our willingness to try to put a winner on the field this year. but these guys look like they are playing well now and we'll have even more freedom to put another piece in this offseason. pitching coming up behind the studs we have now and a smart trade is not unrealistic.  you've made it this far, just stick with them!  there is a reason you're not a yankee fan!

matmil
matmil

I know it's tough but you have to hope Alderson knows what he is doing. You can't force things to happen, hopefully when the right deal comes along he can pull the trigger.

mets74
mets74

@matmil Yeah, I don't think that's wise. Maybe TdA second, Murphy third, Duda fourth, Wright fifth, so on and so forth.

nncyel
nncyel

@Cheryl Ann @nncyel He still has a WAR of 2.4. Sorry you do not take a player with 2.4 WR and replace him with a career minor leaguer or an overmatched rookie. End of story. Sheesh.

mets74
mets74

@matmil You've got a point. Give him some seasoning and I believe he would be a good fit in the 3rd spot. But if he's not batting 2nd or 3rd tonight, I'm done with this team. :-)

Mike the pitching has been acceptable even without Harvey. What's needed is a clutch bat.

I've been a Met fan since 62. I've seen the whole show man. Believe me I know how tough being a Met fan is. Seen 69, 73, 86, and all the disasters in between.

Hang in there 74. It's the tough times that make the championships feel that much better.

mets74
mets74

@matmil No, I'm fine. Pure sarcasm with me being done with the Mets. I've been a fan since '74, not as long as you, but I've been thru the ups and downs. It's a game, I'm not going to go off the rails if this or that doesn't happen. I like where they're heading, if it pays off (which I think it will), fantastic. If it doesn't, I'm not going to whine about it.

There was a time when the Met's were a National joke. Then 69 happened and we had the last laugh on everybody.
