What’s on Tap for Feb. 20: Bullpen sessions, position players report

Mets position players are due to report by today. However, everyone but Omar Quintanilla and Wilfredo Tovar have already reported (Rubin, Feb. 20).

Pitchers and catchers continue their workouts today with the team’s first official full-squad workout Saturday.

Rafael Montero, Vic Black, Jon Niese, Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom and other pitchers are slated to again throw bullpen sessions later in the morning.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

I’m here… finally. It’s beautiful weather and I’m ready to scramble. I’m looking forward to watching Montero and deGrom this afternoon. I recall watching Montero last year, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen DeGrom. I’ll be stopping to post pictures and notes of things I see throughout the day. If there is anything specific you’d like me to try and capture, let me know…

To all those who constanly complain and critique Matt's writing and the choice of stories he posts, please get a life.  I have been searching for days trying to find the law that says if you want to be a fan of the Mets, you must read this blog.  My search has proved fruitless.  There is no such law.  What that means is if you do not like the way Matt spells, or the fact that he will post the same information everyday about players that are not on the Mets, or if you think he is just a shill for the Wilpon's since SNY sponsers this blog, there is an easy available solution.  DO NOT READ THIS BLOG!!!!!  DO NOT POST ON THIS BLOG!!!!!  Go get your Mets fix from one of the many other blogs that are available.  It is ridiculus how much time and energy is wasted here talking about the writing and about Matt.  The fact that some of you go as far to personally attack Matt just blows me away.  Please get some perspective in your life!!  This is just a blog, nothing more or less.  The quality of the writing, the stories selected to post, Matt's relationship with team officals, none of it makes a difference to the teams actual performance.  The Mets will not win 10 more game if Matt suddenly becomes a writing version of Webster's Dictionary.  The will not lose 10 more games if he post 25 more stories about Stephen Drew or teams interest in Ike Davis.  Nothing written here has any impact at all on the actual Mets baseball team so please just give it a rest.  Some of you are truly unbelivable and really just need to calm down.  Get a life, go out with some friends, get laid, do something other then worry about this blog.  Please.

Hey Matt,I would like to see how some of the veteran guys work with the young kids.

Quintallia knows he doesn't have to show up early.  He's still Terry's pet, well above Tejada on the respect hierarchy, somehow.

Matt, I'd like to hear a scout's take on how Flores looks at shortstop after fat camp.

I'd like to see a full length picture of Noah Syndergaard to get an idea of just how imposing his stature is.  An ideal pic would be something that provided some scaling (i.e. average male) in between Syndergaard (height) and Colon (width).

Rather than discussing typos and the decline of Western Civilization can we touch upon something that REALLY matters? If history has shown us anything it's that Omar Quintanilla will be our everyday shortstop by sometime in late June. And yet he is clearly in no hurry to report to camp.

Just let me know how Ike is hitting slow pitching. Ha

If you could capture a Charizard, that'd be awesome.

I'd like to know about Stephen Drew and his contract situation. Also, I'd like to know if the Pirates and Orioles are still keeping an eye on Ike Davis......

Is Vin Black related to Vic? Really sloppy reporting.

The way I heard it is that he looks like a freight train coming at you. He's just so big not just tall and his arms are apparently very long and it seems like the ball get's an extra 6 inches because of that and add that to his fastball velocity.

Starz31
Starz31

It's not that big of a deal he wasn't there early. I know terry has said in the past he likes his players to arrive early but we're not talking about a young prospect fighting for a roster spot.

@Kenneth Meltsner Seriously, what's with the typo obsession?  What is this, the WSJ? lol  Be glad it's not like it used to be with 2 1/2 newspapers and modest baseball coverage.

Tarheel11

@Kenneth Meltsner  Good point. And it's one thing if you are a star player and you show up late but you're a bench guy and you show up late? I don't get it.

@georgie  Yeah, he's killing soft toss! I'll bet he's even raking on the tee!

@ReedRothchild  haha really dude? Your life must not be too exciting if you're so negatively impacted by a typo on a blog about our favorite baseball team. you wrote six lines about it. Who cares! His typos have zero effect on the quality of the Mets.

Well, Drew ants $14 from what I can gather.

And Alderson want to sign him.

But the holdup, from what I can gather from sources familiar with the thinking of people who may or may not have once driven past Citi Field, is that Drew also ants that clause which will give him an extra $3M if he happens to fall victim to the curse that seems to plague recent Met shortstops, those pesky injuries that happen when they dive into first base.

He just doesn't ant that to happen during his tenor with the Mets.

Anyway, that's what I have gathered from careful inspection of the inside of David Wright's hat.

@Ed Renner  If you got the point then who cares. His typos don't change the team's roster at all.

@Tarheel11  It's exciting that this is the third year in a row we have a top young pitching prospect to dream about. The team finally has a legit young pitching staff they can build around in the next few years. It's exciting.

@qualcomm @Kenneth Meltsner  It's quite hilarious seeing the vitriol spewed at Matt. Be thankful we have a great resource at our finger tips to follow our favorite baseball team.

He's not late tho. Players sometimes like working with their own trainers until they need to report.

@Starz31 I'm with RR on this one, at the very least, you'd think the guys he'll be watching will get their names spelled correctly. A missed key stroke here and there, o.k., that happens, but SEVERAL names BOTCHED in the same posting?

Or, as they say in show biz, I don't care what you say about me, just spell my name correctly.

@ReedRothchild Sources say that the Pirates and Orioles have been all over Lucas Davis Jr., but will only part with all the talent that made them such winning organizations if we throw in Ruby Tejada, and let Bill Ripken host Beer Money.

Respect Qualcomm!

@ReedRothchild  Drew isn't worth anything more than a 1 year contract. And thankfully it seems the Mets have no interest in that either.

Do a spin around other major blogs and see how many make errors like this one does.

Might be illuminating for you.

ReedRothchild
ReedRothchild

Why do so many people like you accept such sad mediocrity?

He's the owner and leader of one of America's most widely-read sports blogs.

He spelled TWO of five names wrong in that sentence.

How long would it take him to proofread?

Assuming he even knows their names at all.

Matt sucks, but people who defend him suck much, much more.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Starz31 @Tarheel11  Absolutely. And from what you hear he focused so much on the pitching staff instead of his own hitting. And that says a lot about the kid's character. That he is so focused on the pitching staff. His pitcher's have to love that! And if he can develop that will go down as one of the best trades.

Starz31
Starz31

@Tarheel11 @Starz31  I think he will. There was an obvious adjustment period last year and he was unlucky that he missed so many at bats early in the year from injuries. He did start off well in AAA.

I think he has way more talent than a lot of fans know of. He did handle the pitching staff really well and even got good grades for his pitch framing.

I also agree that expectations may be lowered now that he has made his debut. He just needs to stay healthy and I think he will deliver big time.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Starz31 @Tarheel11  If TDA hits like everyone seems to think he will, he would be huge to this team. I'm just hoping there will be so much focus on everything else that he can just relax and kid of get lost in the background and do his thing.

Starz31
Starz31

@Tarheel11  That's a cool insight. I'm excited to see what Wheeler does with his first full season. Harvey made a huge jump this time last year in his first full year and I think Wheeler is out to prove a lot. And we still haven't even talked about Montero or Matz.

I also think TdA opens up a lot of eyes this season. There's a reason he's the consensus #1 young catcher in baseball, despite his slow start last year.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Starz31 @Tarheel11  I was talking to one of the area scouts from the Pirates who was watching one of our kids and he couldn't stop raving about Syndergaard. He seems to think he will be better than Harvey and Wheeler. Said he could be absolutely dominant! Said his only issue was getting on top of his curve and getting consistent with his release point and developing his change. Says his fastball has a lot of late life. But claims he has the same bulldog mentality and just literally intimidates people with his size and length. Sure is a lot of hope with those three power arms!

Starz31
Starz31

@Tarheel11 @Starz31  Yeah, that's true. Knowing all that and still arriving "late" or on time. But we're talking about Q here. Can't be too upset if this helps him fall out of Terry's favor.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@Starz31 @Tarheel11  I agree but it doesn't matter what you and I think and whether it's overblown or not. Everyone, even us, know how Collins thinks of it so I'm sure Q does too. And if you know your manager isn't going to like it...

Starz31
Starz31

@Tarheel11 @Starz31  I don't disagree and he has said that in the past. But it is what it is. I just think that it's overblown. It's more important for those players who have fallen out of favor in the past (like Tejada) to show up early and demonstrate a commitment to turning their game around.

Starz31
Starz31

@hankincolo @Starz31  It's just missing the point tho. You can easily post a comment about it being a mistake. But why get so worked up over it that you missed the entire point of the post; which is discussing the Mets. There's just no reason to go to extreme levels of stress over it.

Tarheel11

@qualcomm  Yeah, you could have gone with the Ray Rice fiance line but Ukranian Police is classic. Might have to steal that one Hank

Starz31

@hankincolo @ReedRothchild  Exactly. It's ok to be frustrated about repeated errors. But nothing is gained by hemorrhaging over a misspelled name. It's even funnier when it's done with dissatisfied insults. Don't visit the  site if it causes you so much pain haha.

hankincolo

@ReedRothchild I agree with you in principle, but let's not go all Ukrainian police on Matt and our fellow Mets fans.

Starz31
Starz31

@ReedRothchild  Wow dude. You need to calm down. This is a Mets Blog. Matt has never been good with typos the past 9 years. And if you're going to extrapolate that to explain the state of the Mets then nothing I say will be enough for you to grow up.

Why do you come here and post on his blog if you think so little of him? I could care less about his typos so I have no problem defending him. Yes, he should be able to afford an editor. Yes, the typos should be fixed. But it's not going to cause me stress. I care more about the team and the content of the posts. I'm not going to exaggerate and insult the man with unnecessary and pointless extremes to make up for a void in my own life.

@ReedRothchild  I got the satire. I ignored it and talked about Drew. But I am proud that I can impress someone.

@ReedRothchild  lol ok man. It just doesn't cause me pain. I'd rather discuss the Mets.
