What you need to know about the Mets bullpen situation

1) Jose Valverde will be the team’s closer, according to Terry Collins, now that Bobby Parnell will miss the rest of the season following next week’s Tommy John surgery.

2) Joel Hanrahan, Ryan Madson, Kevin Gregg and Octavio Dotel are available on the free-agent market. However, while the Mets are open to everything, they are not likely to acquire a player just because Parnell will miss the rest of the season (Daily News, April 7). The Mets scouted and liked Hanrahan during the offseason, and did not send a scout to watch Madson’s showcase in January (Daily News, April 7).

3) Sandy Alderson said last week that he is more inclined to wait and see how things shake out in the big-league bullpen before making any moves internally to replace Parnell. He said, with one or two exceptions (specifically Noah Syndergaard), his Triple-A starting pitchers will get time working out of the bullpen in April to see how they may handle a possible role with the big-league team later this season. This will also help limit their workload, allowing for more innings later in the season.

4) In other words, at least during the next few weeks, the bullpen will likely continue to be Valverde, Kyle Farnsworth, Gonzalez Germen, Jeurys Familia, Carlos Torres, Scott Rice and John Lannan.

5) The Mets bullpen gave up 12 runs in 9 innings to start the season against the Nationals. However, they pitched 8 innings in three games against the Reds this past weekend and allowed only 2 runs..

Bullpen? How about getting a real life major league shortstop first, and Didi don't count. Spend it Wontpons.

Has anyone signed Cuban defector Odrisamer Despaigne yet?  The 26 year old pitcher showcased in Arizona in February:  "Despaigne, 26, threw an assortment of cut fastballs, changeups and sliders during his 35-pitch session. His fastball hovered between 92 mph and 94 mph and topped out at 95."

A couple of years ago, we played over our heads up to the all-star break and needed some assistance with the pen. Needless to say, we did nothing and the second half of the season was a disaster!

Would be very, very surprised to see anything else!!

Please please no more washed up bargin bin relievers hanging on for one last shot at the bigs. There is a reason nobody wants these guys. Bring up montero and degrom in May and get rid of lannon he's a bum.

All you need to know is the Wilpons are cheap and Sandy is a bad GM.

Gregg had a better year last year than Farnsworth.

I hear Sandy is hanging out outside the unemployment office in Flushing seeing if he can find a pitcher for 19 bucks an hour

Think of the Mets' most memorable bullpens over the years.  Their best closers had the fire that pumped up the team and distracted opposing teams: Tug McGraw; Jesse Orosco; Roger McDowell; Randy Myers; John Franco; Armando Benitez; Billy Wagner.  They got the crowd pumped and affected the approach of opposing hitters.  Valverde does that.  Even if he is with us for just this year, he can make a difference in the game and also show our young guns how to close.  Our kids have the talent.  They need the veteran presence to shut down the other team.  Valverde can show this by example.

I definitely like how Farnsworth has settled in and who couldn't like Valverde's energy?! Something this bullpen hasn't had in the past few years is personality and Valverde's brings it

If John Lannan comes in to face a lefty and then gives up more runs in a single inning than had been given up in the previous six, keep him in the bullpen.

It seems to me like Gonzalez Germen's first batter he faces in the game, he can't even come close to the plate. What good does that do if you come into get the last out of an inning? He seems to settle down in the next inning but damn

I don't want to see Dotel back with this team. The guy is ancient and hasn't been all that good in a while. Hey, I think Frank Francisco may be available . . .

Just like Familia, someone needs to teach Vic Black how to find the plate...in a hurry. Those two finding their way would be a BIG help. Pretty much do it. But something tells me it's going to be a process. A process that puts "L's" on the board.

I would take a flyer on Hanahan and or Dotel

Spend money to bring in someone to help this season with the Parnell loss? Nahh.

"We'll wait and see." Yeah right. Most of us Mets fans weren't born yesterday.

What you need to about the Mets bullpen situation: It Sucks.

In other words, the mets pen sucks and Sandy is not going to do Jack about it. Gotta love this guy.

2 weeks from now, after they blow a bunch more games, they'll pick someone up. Sandy Alderson, REACTIVE, good GMs are PROACTIVE.

Sign Dotel to a minor league deal. He has the experience and will provide stability at the back end of the bullpen. The other guys mentioned will be out of price range for the mets.

Between now and July, lots of pitchers are going to get injured, as they always do.  We should use this time to showcase some of our young arms in the minors and see if they can either earn a spot on the team long-term or if we can use them as trade bait to pick up a bat or two.  It's worth a try.

Alderson is big on the "wait and see how things shake out" approach.

John Lannan should try his luck at barber school.....Or maybe join the circus

Sandy Alderson says that he will wait to see if the Mets find themselves in a fluky situation and are not dead in a couple of months.  If that happens he will acquire someone.   Usually you try to compete first, not wait to see if you are competing.

This bullben has the potential to blast-off and become the best in the game!!

Sandy...we are not worthy!!!

@John Schod Absolutely!  And you can argue that the bullpen was pretty much responsible for the epic collapses in 2007 and 2008. Hard to imagine but things seem to have actually gotten WORSE.

@Jay Kreisberg  No way Montero should be in the pen. He's a starter until he's not.

I don't see DeGrom being much help. His minor league ERA in the last two years have been 4.80 and 4.52

@Jay Kreisberg I think the accountants at the Hospital for Special Surgery want them: MRIs, consultations, private suites, VIP service at a VIP price. Most hospitals are begging for high end patients willing and able to pay.

Kenneth Meltsner

@upstater Hate to beat a dead horse but Farnsworth has been shot for the better part of five years. At least Hawkins could still bring-it when he had to. Kyle is hear 'cause he's cheap.

upstater

@GhostofCasey Orosco didn't really pump up the team, nor did Franco. They were effective in an under-stated way.

Funny how the years have given you a kinder assessment of Armando Benitez.

Why keep him on the team at all?

Olerud42

@Kenneth Meltsner  I would take a flyer on Dotel. Basically didn't pitch last year, but in 2012 he put up a 3.57 ERA in 58 IP. That's useful.

Olerud42

@Ron Davis  Agreed, Ron. They've both been good within the last 2 years.

chasesimms

No Ron. That would be proactively addressing a need. Sandy likes to "wait and see how things shake out. "

That's what's going on with Tejada, and with the Duda and Davis situation. We're waiting to "see how things shake out."

Mets fans need to be more patient! This whole expecting to win thing is really starting to annoy Alderson and his bosses.

@Max Denby  Because there are a wealth of good, unemployed relief pitchers just waiting to be picked up, right?

@mrfurley I agree, he's finished. 86 mph fastball is not going to cut it.

@Lets Go Mets!  If we continue to showcase our young arms in the bullpen, like the Cardinals do, this could be their moment to shine and help the team or it could be an opportunity to showcase these arms to other teams who are hurting for young pitching.  If so, we may be able to work out a trade or two for a bat.  Let's use the arms to aquire the bats.  It's worth a shot.

@Olerud42 @Jay Kreisberg  unless you are trading one of niese, colon, gee, where do you see montero as a starter? and when thor is brought up, you need to say bye to 2 of them.

@Merrill Needham Benitez was actually very good during most games. His problems started when the game was a very high pressure game. In other words, he had choke when it counts issues.

@ifti99  Agreed ifti. Lannan will be first Met cut this year I figure.

Merrill Needham

Tejada, Davis and haven't really been the problem. So far, the big problem was that we got beat by one of the top teams in the game. And we just took two out of three from the reds. Lets see where we are Friday.
