Weekend Hot Stove Review, presented by Citi

The Mets will introduce Curtis Granderson at a press conference at the Winter Meetings on Tuesday (Davidoff).  Granderson will earn $13 million in 2014, $16 million in each 2015 and 2016, and $15 million in 2017 (Heyman). He did not receive a no-trade clause.

Sandy Alderson said Sunday that the Mets still have up to four issues to address on the current roster (Brender). They are willing to trade Daniel Murphy (Martino); they prefer to keep Lucas Duda, but could trade him or Ike Davis this week (Martino); and Alderson said he doesn’t necessarily believe Eric Young Jr. is a reserve player (Brender).

The Mets are among seven or eight teams that have inquired about free agent LHP Johan Santana (Castillo).

The Mariners are likely to trade infielder Nick Franklin (Heyman); Rays LHP David Price has become Seattle’s top priority (Heyman), though the Dodgers, D-Backs and Rangers also have interest (Rosenthal); the Rays intend to find a first baseman (Topkin); the Dodgers remain interested in trading away an outfielder (Gurnick); and Matt Kemp‘s agent thinks he could get moved this week (Edes).

Why would a GM publicly announce that he'd rather keep one player over another?

Number one, it reduces the perceived value of the player you just announced you'd rather get rid of, plus if that player ends up not being traded how is that player supposed to feel still being on a team that announced it doesn't value him?

I think the Mets would be better off trading Alderson for a competent GM

You have a lousy hitting team and your considering trading the only consistent hitter besides Wright,Dan Murphy. It makes no sense. When everybody else is popping up, Murphy hits. Is Young going to hit ? So now you have Grandy and Wright where before you had Murphy and Wright. Doesnt it make sense to have Grandy, Murphy and Wright. At least its a step up. I just can see a lousy hitting team dumping one of their best hitters.

I could see Murphy for Kemp trade with the Mets obviously taking on the entire Kemp contract. Murphy would fit in nice at 3B. Or as a utility guy if Uribe resigns with them. Kemp's salary dump would allow the Dodgers to go after Tanaka and extend Hanley and Kershaw.

If we truly have 16 million to play with sign colon, trade ike and montero for Escobar and call it a day.

Serious question on Kemp.  How would his injuries transition to playing first?  Clearly he has the skills and physical attributes, but would playing first prolong his career and/or prevent degradation of his injuries?

We have a six headed monster looming ay first & second.  Murphy, Davis, Duda, Satin, Flores & Eric Young are vying for two starting positions and 2 reserve positions.  A simple solution would be to trade Davis or Duda and send Flores back to AAA for some seasoning. But we being the Mets, simple is usually not in the cards...

I'd love to add Kemp and think he's young enough to bounce back, however still don't see the coupons taking his salary.  I don't think Niese is going to be moved as his salary is controllable and he is our only lefthanded starter.

I am all for trading Murphy/Duda/Ike as long as we can upgrade the infield.  There is no way the Wilpons are going to take on Kemps contract.

Maybe Alderson is trying to shed Murphy and Ike's salary to make a play for Matt Kemp? Just food for thought. That's 9 mil saved which if we took on Kemp's entire salary without giving up any of our prospects puts us at 12 mil this year for Kemp. And leaves us with 5 more PRIME seasons with Kemp. His contract ends at age 34 which is not THAT old.

Should be an interesting week.  It would be good to follow up last week's optimism.  I think maybe we can get involved in a 3 team trade with Seattle and Rays to get Escobar out of it. Maybe we can go out of the box that way.

I think Murph is gone.  A nice raise for him and they do not want that salary invested in what is a good, but flawed player. I would try to get as much as I can for him.  I do not think we are getting back a big name for him without giving up more than just him.  I would use him for multiple players that really need his bat. Maybe to Houston for Villar and Cisnero. Not popular, but a promising SS with speed and historical OK OBP guy and a decent reliever.  Move would also save some $4m in salary.

I get more confused every time alderson makes a comment is it me or does he conflict himself in the same sentences at times.

And...just on cue. The Metsblog editorial staff (*cough* Cerrone *cough*) has deleted the post about Sandy's foot-in-the-mouth payroll remarks (once again).

Way to be fans, guys instead of paid shills! *sarcasm*

An outfield of Young, Granderson, and Lagares is completely fine with me for '14.  Personally, I'd like to see if Lagares continues to improve at the plate since his defense could potentially win him a Gold Glove in the future.  He went from looking completely overmatched to hitting .271 and .353 in June/July.  With his type of glove on a team built around pitching, I think he deserves regular playing time.

No we don't want a over the hill broken down player who is trying to stay in Milwaukee

No we can't get Tanaka on a cheap one year deal... He's leaving Japan as their best pitcher by far not being picked from the Bad News Bears

No we can't afford a 41 year old pitcher with a history of PEDs

No one wants Ike as much as you think they do.

Replace Duda, Tejada, Flores, etc for Ike in previous line

No one wants Ichiro. He can't hit anymore

No we are not getting the starting SS for the defending world series champs because we can't afford him

No we never no chance of getting Garza, Arroyo, etc for one year. They all want at least 3 year deals at megabucks per year..so stop even considering them

No the other teams do not want our players that we have seen can't play in return for their best players

Yes you all need to write that Dear Santa letter. Someone has left you the address

Maybe we can get Ichiro for cheap and platoon him with CY. Highly doubtful but Ichiro is my favorite player and I want to dream tonight. Can anyone at least try to convince me that this is a decent idea? Please?

@Bill Donahue

I don't understand this love affair with Murphy.  He is a serviceable hitter and that is it.  No power and a 280 hitter at best.  We need to upgrade second base with a young top of the order hitter that can steal a base and most importantly play very good defense.

metsstrong
metsstrong

@anthony Are you really willing to trade one of our top pitching prospects, and our second best hitter(believe or not), for a 31yr old SS, who's a career .278, and has hit around .250 the last two, who doesn't hit for power, and seems to have a attitude problem every where he's been?

I mean, I think a trade like that should be for Castro, or Cabrera. Not Escobar. I'd rather keep Tejada and give him another chance, before I'd trade for Escobar.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Payroll is at 73 mil. That's WITH Davis, Murphy, Duda. So more like 63 mil. Sandy said payroll would exceed 87 mil. Not alot of guys to get out there however. If you think Drew is worth 12 mil per, that would be a very dumb weak move. Go for Kemp, sign Santana or Harang to fill out the rotation and let Syndergaard develop. Trade Niese at the deadline if need be to save money for Kemp's future salary.

Wheeler, Gee, Mejia, Syndergaard, Harang/Daiske/Santana/Colon.

2015

Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Mejia, Gee, FA pickup to compete with these guys for a spot.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

That would be a nice thought. Move Flores to 2nd. With Lagares playing CF. Nice OF defense with power hitters who can HIT at the corner infield positions. With a solid hitting catcher. Flores and EYJ can platoon second base til one proves who the starter is.

Montero is going to have to be moved for a young solid unproven SS. I think Nick Franklin is the guy to get. Low cost, would be the SS for the next 6 years at least.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Dump them all except for Flores EYJ, save the salary. Take on Kemps salary. Put Flores at 1st base let him be.

gameball

Kemp has had two shoulder surgeries in the last year-and-a-half, and has an ankle condition that is described as potentially career-threatening. He might bounce back as a DH, but I wouldn't take on his contract to play the OF.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

That is the point. Niese's contract IS controllable and he's still young and lefthanded. He would bring back a nice prospect in a deal at the deadline with a team who is in the hunt. With the 10 mil saved on trading Murphy/Davis/Duda and the 21 mil saved trading Niese. I think that makes Kemp's salary alot more manageable. Just have to hope he keeps healthy. But, as far as ticket sales and giving fans a reason to go to the ball park, there is there chance to do so. Kemp is a REAL ball player, not many chances you get to acquire a player of his caliber on what is a 100 mil dollar deal at age 28. The Mets need this.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

9 mil this year for Matt Kemp. If we trade Niese at the deadline that frees up more salary (21 million) and gets us a pretty high ranked prospect. The move is way to logical. Kemp brings fannies to the seats. Ticket sales would go through the roof. Especially next year when Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, Mejia are all in the rotation.

xplr

@hwabouthat I hope so but I doubt it. The Mets are not interested in improving the team. If they were, they would have dumped much of their roster already. They are only interested in reducing payroll.

hwabouthat

They could trade Montero to Seattle for Nick Franklin so we'll get a young cheap under control SS with a bat.

I have a ton of respect for Ichiro, but I think Chris Young will be given a chance to play regularly in RF. We need power from that spot and Young has some pop. Personally, I wish the Mets had brought Byrd back to play RF. I have a lot more confidence in his ability to produce than Young.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Nice team. IF only we had a payroll of 100 mil. I think this team should go for high talent young prospects in the mold of Wil Myers and d'Arnaud. Chris Ownings seems to be the logical play here. Give up Montero and Plawecki and get us our potential franchise SS.

@John Paul Cullinane My fantasy lineup for next year is:

Owings SS

Franklin 2B

Wright 3B

Granderson LF

Davis 1B

Young RF

TdA C

Lagares CF

Bench:  Murphy, Satin, EY Jr, Tejada, Catcher TBD

Rotation:  Wheeler, Niese, Gee, Mejia, Colon

Departed:  Montero, Plawecki, Duda, Parnell

denelor

@hwabouthat It'd be nice for them to do this and keep Murphy.  I know it's not realistic, given their dumb salary constraints, but having a young SS leadoff followed by Murphy, Wright, Kemp, Grandy, Young and then TDA/Legares 7/8 would be a lineup worth going to the park to see.

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

It works, but somehow I don't see it.  If you trade Murphy & Davis (which frees up about 10M - a move I see Sandy doing) You could platoon EYJ & Satin at second. Not that EYJ is terrible from the right side, but Satin rakes against leftys. I'd platoon Duda and Flores at first until one of them wins the job out-right.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

He can play LF with Grandy at CF and Young in RF. Kemp will bounce back. But the Mets eventually have to roll the dice on something. Not everything is a certainty. To win big you have to gamble big. Kemp is a gamble but the payoff would out weight the 100 mil lost if he somehow doesn't pan out.

xplr
xplr

@hwabouthat Why would you trade our only lefthander for a prospect?

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

From a business stand point it makes sense to sign a player like Matt Kemp. Why go out and sign Granderson and waste 60 mil if they are not going to REALLY improve the team? If it was like that then they might as well NOT sign Grandy, taken the backlash from the fans and save some coin by trouting out Duda, Murphy, Satin, Davis, EYJ. Obviously they are looking to trade Murphy, Duda and Davis. So looks like the roster turn over is happening. I think Kemp is their next move. It instantly puts the Mets in contention, especially next year when Harvey returns. With the Yankees signing old past their prime players, NOW is the chance to take the offseason and be the better team in N.Y by signing Kemp.

Frank Stockowski
Frank Stockowski

@hwabouthat Franklin is def the one to go get....young w/ good pop in his bat and can play ss, 2b, and of.....and hes young so can be under control for yrs...give up murph for him and u might be able to get someone else as well....but don't get rid of Montero in this deal

VictoRoy
VictoRoy

I liked Byrd but I don't think he would be able to repeat his numbers as a Met. I think Chris Young will be able to produce similar power stats while playing better defense. Plus, CY is only on board for one year. No way I'd give any of these players a two year deal.

denelor
denelor

@hwabouthat I know Murphy has to go if Kemp is realistic.  Just wishing out loud that it wasn't, because it'd be so nice to see him hitting towards the top of that lineup.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Murphy has to go to allow us to acquire Kemp. Still, Wright, Kemp, Grandy, Young, d'Arnaud is still something I would definitely go to the ballpark and see.

hwabouthat
hwabouthat

Three reasons.

1. Salary dump 21 mil saved being traded to a team who is desperate for a pitcher at the deadline. It allows us to afford Kemps future salary.

2. Allows us to retool the farm system with a high end prospect.

3. No offense but, who gives a sh it if Niese is lefty as along as we are winning games. Niese is a solid pitcher but he is no Kershaw.

somedude

Franklin's the one I want for SS.  He's as young at Tejada, but with more upside.  It makes sense that they would force eachother to get better through competition.  Do the Mariners have a need at 3B that they would take Murph though?  They def have 2B locked up.
