3:08 pm: The 51s announced Wally Backman will return as manager.

Terry Collins chose to keep his coaching staff in tact, and each guy accepted. However, had a spot opened up, Backman would have been the most likely replacement, I’ve heard from people close to the team. The front office really values the work Wally does getting players ready for the 25-man roster. He has a good relationship with Collins and takes pride in his position. However, people who know Backman repeatedly stress his desire to get back to the big leagues.
It’s just a hunch, but I don’t think Backman will ever be manager of the Mets as long as Sandy Alderson is GM. The two men get along, and I’ve heard Sandy was quite impressed with Backman’s passion for the team and preparation for the position in 2010. However, from what I can gather, they just don’t see eye-to-eye on the role of the modern manager. That said, I know Wally has the support of other people in the front office and in ownership, so I don’t think his fate in New York has been written just yet. The question is, considering Collins is under contract for two more years, will another opportunity present itself before Backman bolts? Or, will he stick around for, and get, a better ending in Queens?
